Glider Stands at the field

Greetings All,
I am wondering what guys are using at the field to hold and put together there ships with, I have seen some with what looks like a camera tripod but never seen what is on top of it to hold the plane.

If any one has any suggestions or pics that would be great.

Thanks for any feedback on this.

Chair works great

At a contest last week, there was a feller that had boxes, that could be mounted on a tripod, was giving them away for a handshake, I brought one home with me, am in the process of painting it, and modifying it a bit, then I'll post up pictures and some more information.

I came back from a contest flight one day and found the back on my chair bent. Removed the back uprights and placed a board across the arms and use Midwest's Stand-In: http://www.midwestproducts.com/item_...asp?item_id=57

Hi!

I just posted a great and really inexpensive glider stand that I made. The post is just a few pages back.

Camera Tripod Field Stand

jonejj

I found my old video tripod that was tucked away for years. I used 1 x 3 for the base and 1 x 4 for the uprights. Two 10x32 bolts and wing nuts attach the wooden mount to the tripod deck (Topaz-S setting on the stand in the photos). The stand is almost more useful in the shop than at the field - turns/twist/angle up/down, etc. The telescoping legs are great for fitting in the trunk of my car. Dolled it up with some paint and an AMA decal.

This glider stand has become very popular at our field. It is made of PVC pipe and can be made to any height. Mine is about 40" tall and is made of 3/4" PVC pipe. Others are using 1/2" pipe.

It will accomodate anything from a DLG to a 4M glider. There is a drop area so you can work on your trailing edges while the plane is on the stand. You can face the plane one way and the fuse is supported. Good for putting on the wings.

Then reverse it and rest the plane on the wings for greater stability.

The lower legs can come off for easy storage and transport. The top "X" section can be used as a bench stand.

It REALLY works great! About $20 in materials.

Glider stand

I use a military issue Mark 1-A blanket ... with a stand all you need is a good thermal to come along and your sailplane and stand take a hike ... the blanket has never flipped over on me.

I've seen planes fall out of lawn chairs and mess up the tail or a wingtip, if the wind direction changes.

Years ago, there was a guy at the NATS, from Minnesota I believe, that had a very neat sailplane stand. It was cut out of a single sheet of plywood, and the sides and top were all interlocking (no screws) so that it could be taken apart and lay flat. It would hold two planes and had a top work surface. If I remember correctly, I think RCM even did an article on the stand. Does anyone else remember this stand? I would like to find the information on it.

soarx4: Something like this??

I have been taking pics of glider stands at the last two South West Classics. There's a few pics of different stands in the SWC 2008 and SWC 2009 albums.
