Question

Using a BEC as a voltage regulator?

Dont know if it has been asked before but can a BEC be used as a voltage regulator? Here is the situation. I have a large molded sailplane which I will be running a separate battery pack to power the on-board electronics. The battery is a 2 cell Lithium ion pack (8.2 volts). I need to use a regulator to bring it down to 5 volts and was thinking of using a castle BEC or a park bec. Seeing that the servos and receiver will be the only draw on the pack, will using this BEC as strictly a regulator be ok?

Thanks for the input...

That is exactly what a BEC is, a Voltage Regulator. This is exactly what they are designed to do, so it would be a perfect use for the BEC circuit.

Specifically, i have one of these and I want to use it as a voltage regulator for a two cell lithium ion pack. However it says that the input voltage has to be 9volts a two cell pack will be 8.2 volts. I am assuming this will not be enough and I will have to use a three cell pack or another BEC.

Odd that it indicates 9V minimum input. You might send a correspondence to Dimension to see whether it's been tested for lower input voltage before proceeding. Testing in the air is something that is generally discouraged.

FWIW, I've had nothing but success with these inexpensive BEC's and have used them in several high performance models. They work down to 5.5V input, to which I can attest.

Have you considered running 2S A123 cells direct?

Yep, I will be looking into it before it is in the air. Works great on the ground though. I have it in an electric big Ceres and there is no way I will experiment with it in something so expensive. I can not fit the A123 cells in the fuse with all of the other stuff in it.

A 2s pack goes down to 6v not 8.2v so not even close to working.

eyeFly,

Not sure what size or how many servos you're powering, but there's the BAC range of BECs which do what you want for smaller setups, including voltage reading and charge/on/off plug and socket.

and the BEC + alarm only

Hi Eyefly,

Dimension has a ParkBEC that works with 2s-8s so input voltage is 6v and up.
