50cc Giles to electric first big electric
Hi all looking at going electric in a 50cc Giles from Wildhare the plane is not out yet but I will get the bird when it comes out and was thinking of going electric.. Now this would be my first LARGE electric have a few smaller electrics from PA and such.
I have been researching Motors and speed controls i have found a few that should? work I think here are the links http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...ner_(eq:_70-40) and one for the speed control http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...SA_Warehouse)# Anyhow was looking for input on the things to look out for like how do I disconnect the batterys from the speed control do I do it like my small birds and just open the hatch and pull the plug or do I put a large switch or jumper in the mix some where. I was thinking of not doing a BEC and just going with a A123 setup for the radio gear and this will be 2.4 any issues with that will need to be addressed to but I would think thee should be none !!!! Oh here is a link to the forum with the bird i plan on converting http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_8674605/tm.htm Thanks for all the advice upfront |

You will need something like 12s lipos running at approx 75amps at WOT. this should be about 3kw. You may need a motor with a lower revs per volt, about 200. You should be able to run a prop of 20 inch to 22 inch diameter ( if you have the ground clearance). You will probably get a better response from the giant scale forum. It certainly sounds like a great project.
All the best, Chris UK. p.s. I have only gone up to 9s but I just plug/unplug them in the normal manner. On a large model like this I would use a separate Rx pack. I am still using nicads for my rx packs but they are quite large (sub c size for large models). I am aware that these are old hat nowadays but they work well for me. |

I'm building a Nitroplanes 87.5" 50cc SU-26 conversion into electric. I'm using an all hobbycity power system. Using their Turnigy Aerodrive 170Kv 30oz motor. Not sure how reliable this will be as some users are reporting problems with the motor. If it doesn't work out for me I'll have to swap it out for something different.
I'm going to be running 12S 5000mah pack on a 22x12 amp draw will be somewhere around 80-85 about 3300-3500 watts. Controller wise I would just go with the new 120amp HV controller they have. As far as battery disconnects you don't need to have a main power switch you can just connect the batteries up like you do your smaller models just make sure you really respect the prop and bare in mind the location of the plane and always treat it like it can go hot at anytime especially with that much thrust and that big a prop arc. If you want the added safety you can make your own plug using dean connectors and only make it hot right near the taxiway. You can use an external battery if you wish many people like to do this with a bigger power system. I don't like having to worry about charging receiver packs though and running low on em, so I'm using CCBEC's but I'm using three of them to make sure the high torque servos don't overheat and shutdown the controller. |

I have been looking at motors will be going 12S or 2 6S but no less the motors are few and far depending on how much you want to spend the Hyperions look good starting to piece it together the plane will not be out for a couple months I am like a kid in the candy store !!!

dude get a neu motor 1521 1.5y geared inrunner
I have one in my dietrich 50cc extra 260 ... on my old thunder power 25c 12s 5000 packs I was getting 4100 watts on high timing.. or 3700 watts on low I went too the new thunder power pro power 30c packs and now I'm getting 4700 watts burst on low timing with a steady 4500 watts!! It's just insane power.. everytime I fly it people freak out..it makes a DA-50 look like a toy ... I set up the throttle on a dual rate and can switch between 3600 watts which flys it great or 4500 watt for a insane vertical I won't use it much.. the flight times would be too short for 3d and IMAC there is no better motor ...it isn't cheap but well worth the extra cash I had it out yesterday and just love it Ron |

Now I do not mind getting a new motor but was wondering my friend has a Hacker C50 Xl19 I was wondering if this motor would have enough I am sure it would have to be geared thru a gearbox and where to find that is another thing.. Anyhow just another thought !!!
The NEU is not bad either will sure keep it in my possibilty list |

If you want to go with the Hobby City route, then get the 80-85-B motor that one has a kV of 170, that on a 12 S should be perfect for the plane.
I have a HXT 63-74-200 on 12S on an Ultra RC Katana and is is simply a rocket, too much power. I first got the Aerodrive, but it failed on the first flight with loose magnets, those really suck... Get the regular HXT motors I have been flying on that one for at least 30 flights and it has endured... Just remember to balance perfectly your propeller on these chinese motors (well any electric motor as a matter of fact) and you will get nice results... Regards, Homero |

Here is the one I did. I was running it on 12s2p A-123 cells and have a set of 12s2p Lipos in it now. I havent flown it with the lipos but will here soon. And its for sale as I want to fund another project.
A great flying plane that WOWs the Gas guys. They are impressed with the performance. 16# and 15# with the Lipos. Vertical is very good and it will 3D although I am not a 3D pilot. DualSky Motor 90 amp HV contoller 5 cell NIMH rec pack HS 5645 Servos 22x10 prop 56 amps static on the A-123 cells Its a good combo. The E Flite 160 on 12s would probably do the job too. The Hobby City motors are a good choice but be prepared to change out the bearings. That is the weak area of thier motors. Boca Bearing usally has the correct ones in stock. Jeff |

http://www.innov8tivedesigns.com/pro...roducts_id=547 Good support from this company (Scorpion). Everything has bulletproof warranty and 50% crash replacement policy. Great service. They seem to be one of the few companies that really focus's on the really big motors. I'm just posting some alternative sources. Never been a huge hobbyking fan. I'm not sure I would trust a plane like that to their hardware. If you look, that Turnigy ESC is 125g vs 180g for the scorpion or 150g for the castle. Scary that it is that light. I've also not had good luck with my attempt at using a smaller motor from that company you listed. It looked exactly the same, but much smaller, and the motor specs weren't even close. It turned out to be not even usable because it was so far off what I needed for my plane. Anyway, it's just my 2cents. Let me know when you get it all. I'll meet you up at the field and check out the new plane. http://www.castlecreations.com/produ...hv_series.html Of course there is also the CC alternative. |

Well sometimes!!! Good answer Huh...
Yes A-123 are good if you need weight up front. In my Giles I did it just to see what it could do. Admittedly if it were lighter it will fly better. I never had to worry about the amps. I now have a 12s2p Lipo in it. I now have the A-123's in my Clipped wing Monocoupe. 4600 mils and it flies a loooong time. With the short nose the batteries are a perfect match. I use batteries to fit the application. I have a mix of Lipo's and A-123 batteries. A-123 batteries are a good value for the amount of cycles yoiu get from them. Try them as they are very nice to work with Jeff |
