Airtronics 10CH FHSS radio SD-10G
I just got back from Toledo and saw the new Airtronics 10CH....WOW. (Thanks Mark Atwood for showing me this radio)
Keep in mind I have a MPX Royal EVO9 that I absoulutely love, but this new Airtronics rig is NICE. I saw it and the new Hitec Aurora (Thanks Mike Mayberry for you time and patience at the Hitec booth)and I thought the Hitec was cool but I think the Airtronics beats it out. Does anyone know where I can find more info on it? I looked on Airtronics site but there isn't even a hint that the thing exists. |

The Aurora has 2 position switches where the Airtronics has 3 position switches. The Airtronics has spaces to blocked off so you can move switches to where you want them. The switch spacing is such that I can get my fingers between them comfortably.
The Airtronics has triple rates on everything and expo assignable to each rate as well as the ability to increase and decrease mix percentages while flying so you can get your mixes just right. If you fly helis, particularly CCPM mixed helis, there is a software function in the Airtronics that allows you to take the CCPM interaction out at the radio The Airtronics and the Aurora both have provisions for backing up the memory and firmware so that was a wash. The Aurora has a touchscreen which is really cool but I didn't see a mechanism to align the screen. The Aurora can be used on 72 and 2.4 which is great and would not make you sell all your 72 mhz stuff and the AIrtronics is 2.4 only so in my case I need to wholesale swap out my recievers. For the prices on the radios and receivers are so close that it really came down to what features I would find most useful and the ergonomics of the controls. As stated I absolutely love my EVO and the only thing I really give up is the ability to rotate the gimbals, but the gimbals on both the Airtronics and the Hitec feel MUCH better than my EVO. Oh, and the Airtronics is designed to take a 2S lipo if you wanted to change from the NiMh. |

Why not the EVO 2.4 upgrade? Not sure when it will arrive, but it might be a choice for the future.

My EVO isn't upgraded to an EVO Pro yet and that was supposed to be available how long ago. I really am not of a mind to wait for the 2.4 stuff.
The 8CH 2.4 RX from Airtronics is $80, what do you think the price will be on the MPX RX? I love my EVO, and a good friend of mine is Futaba team pilot who couldn't get me to switch. This wasn't something I have not put a lot of thought into, when I bought the EVO it did (and in some aspects still does) more than I need, but it does not fit my needs right now without the Pro upgrade. Even at that it will fall short in the heli setup. Heck, I even had custom aluminum stick tops made for my EVO and put a Lipo in it after killing two NiMH packs and a LiIo pack. It was and still is a great radio, but this one fits my needs better at this time. |

OK, if the heli programming is lesser than another radio, and that is something that you need, then it certainly makes sense to buy a different radio.

I've thought of buying one, then decided I would concentrate on the Microstar2000 single stick that I'm building. The Microstar now has ccpm mixing built in along with just about any other mixing that can be sufficiently explained to the designer. Been bigged down with work and seem to have no real energy to get going on the difficult parts of the machining to finish it. Once I get done I should be satisfied for anything with 8 channels or less.
I will say that programming helis (any swash any tail, any gyro) on the Futaba 9C is a piece of cake, I expect the 10C would be even better. |
