Build Log

BB J3 Cub

Presenting the BB J3 Cub. This plane was my entry in the BB Tribute Contest, but was not finished by the dead line. In fact it has taken me a 3 months since then, because of more pressing issues. The plane flys better than my 42" RET BB, I built this one with ailerons, my first. I have a vid of it flying for about a minute before the batteries ran out of juice and I hit a tree. Remember to always charge your batteries before you go fly.

Here is the vidio of the maiden flight.

Ok, I finished the plans for the BB J3 Cub. See below.

The specs are;

Wing span = 44"

Wing area = 413.5 square inches

Fuse length = 29.5 inches

Motor = Emax 2822, 1200kv

Prop = 9x3.8

Esc = Simple 18 amp

Receiver = 9 gm, 6 channel

Servos = 9 gm, qty 3

Battery = Lipo, 1000 mAh, 20c

Wheels = D75xH18mm

Landing Gear = Made from bent coat hanger

Auw = 19 oz.

Construction material = Dow PBIII fan fold foam

The BB J3 Cub uses the same monoblock construction as the BluBaby, so for assembly instructions I would suggest you check out that build thread.

If anyone wants to build one of these and has a specific question, just let me know here and I'll do my best to answer it.

Really nice, clean build. Did you show it off over at the BluBaby thread? If you haven't, you really should.

Thanks hemak,

I plan to put a post on the BluBaby thread and the old tribute thread after I get everything into my blog. A little less pressure this way. I finished the plans, so I just have to make all the pdf files for them. It's supposed to rain tomorrow so I will get it all together and post it then.

You did a very nice job on those plans (very thorough). I have a question though. What does "D size" mean on your file name above? Does it need to be scaled to be 44"? Thank you for posting the plans. It looks like a very good flyer in your video. Congratulations.

Blue... Great job on the Cub. You may have to build a few more as you can't have too many cubs. Bob

D-size drawings are 34" wide x 22" high, so if you have access to a large format plotter you can print it out at 1:1 on two sheets of paper. I have one at work, but only printed it out at 8.5" x 11" for reference and used the tiled pdf to make my cub. I wanted to test the tiled version of the plans since that is what most people will use.

Foamenator, Thanks for the complement. I will probably build a 34" kfm2 version for use with a blue wonder motor.

What did you use for paint. It looks very nice and opaque.

BTW I downloaded the plans for the future.

I used apple barrel craft paint form Walmart, bright yellow. It is very opaque. I had to use several coats to cover the blue evenly. Next time I will put on a white base coat to see if that will reduce the number of coats required. I mixed it 50/50 with rubbing alcohol, each coat dries fairly quickly that way. Also need to try to remove as much of the black printing from the foam as possible before painting. It rubs off of the packing tape very easily, so you should try to scuff the tape up with sand paper before painting.
