GWS P-51 Free Flight

Has anyone converted this plane to R//C? It only has a 24" span and is 20" long.

Here's the GWS site..

Looks like it could be a good backyard flyer...

I bought one of these at the AMA show a few years ago. I haven't assembled it yet.

I'm glad I waited, as the quality and lightness of radio gear has improved so much since then. I just wish I'd bought the Ryan STA instead, I think it's prettier.

One of our local flyers did in fact convert one using a small Hyperion outrunner. He added ailerons, and it flew very well for a small plane. If I can contact him I'll ask him to take a look at this thread. He's an air cargo pilot, though, so be patient.

mthomas,
I dont know alot about these free flight planes, but I read about this same conversion here on the cox micro warbirds. I do remember reading that the motor that is in the free flight one, has to be changed out. It looks just like the stock cox motor, but its not made for the extra weight that comes with rc equipment. Most people are using a small brushless and lipos. Do a search for atomic warbirds, and cox warbirds. Hope this helps you out.

I installed a GWS 3020/8T Outrunner with a Tbird 9 speedy, using a 2 cell 3.5 amp liPo…the Rx/ servos were a blue arrow. 3 channel setup with ailerons & elevator…

If you can get hold of one - it's a great plane to fly. I installed a tower pro brushless motor and 11V 800mAh lipo. It's fantastic, flies fast and climbs vertically. Don't fly too slow, or you'll get a very quick stall. Also the canopy has a tendency to depart from the aircraft...

I haven't flown mine for a while now, not since the lipos I used in it died. (Maybe I'm just too scared!)

I converted something similar. It has a 20" wingspan and is made with epp. I have it set up 3 channel rudder control with a 10 gram UH outrunner. It flies great and is nearly indestructible. I like the GWS one, I would get it if I didn't already have this one!

A mini EPP warbird... I just might have to get one. Where did you get that airframe?
