NOTE!! All the initial testing for the Samson was done using a 16x8~16x10 prop with the new (and rather fabulous) Zs4025-14 motor. However, after the new G3 4200 and 5000mAh VX packs were available to us, we found that a Zs4025 16-turn motor and bigger prop works even better, due to G3's higher voltage output.

Zs4025-16 motors (new release) will be available in USA on about June 10.

With the Zs4025-16 and suggested 6S batteries (4200/5000 VX 6S) prop to start should be 17x10. 17x12 or 18x10 are options depending on your style and batteries. (up to maybe 18x12 with static current test)

ESC should be 80A minimum. SBEC should be fine (only 4 servos). Atlas Digital DS20-FMD suggested for all positions.

Here're some more pics at Hyperion-world.com . Video should follow in a week or less.

If you go with a less powerful battery, like the LVX series or CX, would you still use the 14 turn version? I am sure lots of guys already have those or TP or FP packs.

My Sampson II arrived today. WOW looks great, and its a big plane. ZS4025 coupled with G3 batteries will challenge some conventional thinking I reckon. I am with Chris though - I have motors that would suit and have older (25/30C) cells that are still fine. I am seriously thinking about trying a ZS motor but with the cells I have - is the 14turn the right motor?

You can always prop down. Drop an inch in pitch for instance and test amp draw on the ground.

Hi all,

Here is a video of a late prototype flying just after New Years eve in North Germany. Max Ebert, who is flying the Samson is a show pilot that is flying for Hyperion, showcasing mostly our aerobatic models. Max is also greatly assisting us in finding the optimum drive lines, CG and throws that fit not just one flying style.

We have tested everything from 5s to 8s and landed on 6s as the ideal setup considering AUW to power ratio and flight characteristics. It is really very powerful as you can see in the video.

Please note that this is a pre-production prototype. Scale details are improved in prodution model, but flight characteristics are very similar.

Samson flight video from Jan. 2009

The video is hosted by Max' club; thank you very much to MBC Lübeck! You can see some more pictures from the day the video was shot at the site of the club.

Hi G,

I'm 99% sure that this vid was shot on the Zs4025-16 motor prototype, but pls confirm that for me. Current (70A they listed) seems a bit higher than expected considering previous 4350Cx and 17x10.

Hi D,

Correct, we used the 16-wind prototype of the Zs4025 in the video.

We tried a lot of props and made both static and dynamic measurements with the RDU. I will find the data and post in here.

It's not too difficult to remove the wings. We use aluminum mount plates (epoxied into the wings) to attach the struts. The mounts are tapped, so you don't need to mess with nuts and washers.

Having said that, I'd personally prefer a vehicle that can hold the assembled model. Since it's a Bipe, the span isn't so big and most mid-size hatchbacks, etc, should be able to fit it.

Thanks. We've just started testing the production motor, so need to check the data against yours...

Samson throw recommendations

These are our recommendations for surface throws on the Hyperion Samson II:

For the first flight we recommend these settings

- Elevator 18mm up/down or 10 degrees up/down
- Aileron 13mm up, 6mm down or 12 degrees up, 6 degrees down
- Rudder 37mm

For 3D flying

- Elevator 36mm uo/down or 20 degrees up/down
- Aileron 33mm up, 17mm down or 28 degrees up, 15 degrees down
- Rudder 70mm

Even if you consider yourself a 3D pilot we do NOT recommend you start out with the 3D throws. Especially the elevator is very effective.

Expo as per preference as usual

There is some video shot by a friend during our review flying. It's the first or second flight. I'll try to get a link.

I watched the video above and all I can say is that guy is a great pilot. Very smooth.
