I think they fly better and they certainly look better with dihedral. I just use a heat gun to bend the foam and then strapping tape for supports instead of a spar.

Mig 3

I just finished one of Ken's Mig 3.

Favorite (or new) construction techniques:
  • Build VLF design
  • Embed dowel spar between wing layers (instead of fiberglass strapping tape)
  • Hinge with CA hinges made from floppy disk material
  • Reinforce motor mount with Sailor Jerry's toothpick motor mount reinforcement
  • Draw panel lines using templates made from 3-views and a #2 pencil
  • Mark CG with hole reinforcements subtle but easy to feel with fingertips (see reference picture)
  • Prime with Freddie B's miracle whip
  • Protective coat of Minwax Polycrylic
  • Made lettering with Craft Robo
  • Brace elevator pushrod with ply standoff holder (idea c/o Budget RC's Mark)
  • Finish canopy with heat-shrink packing tape (idea c/o Ken)
  • Hinge hatches, close with rare earth magnet / washer pairs, and use hinge tape for handle

Things tried but not so favorite:
  • Spray acrylic paint thinned with rubbing alcohol and sprayed with Preval -- I had difficulty getting it thinned enough to flow but not so thin that it went on very wet

Ken, thanks again for your detailed work on these plans! Building these is relaxing, and they come out great.

That is a good looking plane. Kudos.

I particularly like the panel line work, a subtle accent rather the overdone jobs sometimes seen. I'm going to have to study up on that template method, references
to any tutorials would be appreciated.

CG marker is a good tip as well.

Hope it flies like gangbusters for you.

Thanks all for the encouragement.

In case you haven't already seen it, here's a short description of the template method for panel lines:

i-16

Ken, anything for you.

I recently visited Flying Heritage Collection and was inspired.

Relative to the Mig-3,
  • Model Plane Foam, my first, but most certainly not my last.
  • Non-slip drawer liner to keep the battery from sliding about -- I always find myself fighting with velcro

And something I tried that didn't work so well, an oil-based Sharpie paint pen. The paint wouldn't flow through the tip, and repeatedly pressing the tip to 'prime' the pen gave a small pool of paint. Always worth trying something new.

Ken, thanks again for the plans.

Edit 17-OCT-2012: Worked this one up in SketchUp along with the cut file. Plans to be released soon.
