Build Log

F4 Phantom - Easybuild (6mmflyrc Quickbuild)

Here is my Easybuild version of the F4 Phantom.

You can purchase a kit from 6mmFlyRC or if you want to built it yourself from scratch the plans can be found within this thread.

http://www.6mmflyrc.com/quick-build-series/

It has a mid-mounted motor, electronics and battery are mounted on a tray which is accessible via an access door underneath.
It is built from 6 mm Depron, held together with hot glue. I only used Epoxy for the carbon rods.
I used just two servos to control all surfaces but you could use a third for separate elevator.

It flies very good even in windy conditions and inverted is a breeze.

[UPDATES]
V1.1 will balance with 1350 weight or 2100 weight battery.
V1.11 opened up the prop slot to improve air flow and reduce noise.

SPECS:-
Wing span = 71cm (~28”)
Length = 106cm (~42”)

MY SETEP:-
Weight (painted) = 380g (~13.4oz)
Weight (painted with 1350mAh battery) = 510g (~18oz)
Weight (painted with 2100mAh battery) = 570g (~20.1oz)
Prop = 6x4
Motor = 2000kv
ESC = 25A min
Battery = 1350 or 2170mAh 3s1p Li-Po
Aileron throw = +/- 15 degrees
Elevon (Elevator) throw = +/- 25 degrees
Static thrust = minimum 650g (~23oz)
Expo = 40%
COG = 12cm to 12.5cm from wing break

Maiden flight video:-
F4 Phantom Easybuild (6mmflyrc Quickbuild) (2 min 5 sec)

All painted up:-
F4 Phantom Easybuild #2 (6mmflyrc Quickbuild) (2 min 46 sec)

Note that these videos are available in both SD and HD.

You can find build pictures and higher quality versions of the videos on my website.

Very nice. I guess once you post the plans I'll have to add another plane to my build list.

I know...I am running out of wall and ceiling space...

I'll post the plans shortly, I just want to test it using the smaller 1350 battery to ensure the COG works OK.

Yeah, I've always like the Phantom, although I've noticed that there aren't too many planes that I don't like.

The WRAMS show sucked. There were 1/2 the vendors that were there last year and last year's turnout wasn't exactly stellar. I've been going to that show for about 10+ years; it's the only one around. It's doubtful that I'll be going again. I spent twice as much on admission, parking, and gas, than I did on RC purchases.

Sadly Hong Kong will be getting most of my business, with the exception of my LHS for items like CA, props, and a other odds and ends.

Thank's to NAC and people like him, I'll be building a lot of my own stuff for quite a while.

Yea I have come to the same conclusions on the parts issues...I have driven over an hour to hobby shops in CT only to find their prices just too damn high to justify the purchase of a $60 or $80 Lipo when I can get 3 Lipo's for the same price...and for me, building is theraputic and fun too. I always have something on the boards and like you said...the plans just keep coming.

Sorry to hear the WRAMS show sucked but in this economy I guess I am not surprised.

I ran a few more packs today 2150 and 1350. It will fly fine with both sizes but the 1350 is a bit on the light side and the COG is moved back a bit, but it is still stable.
As the plane has a bit more weight than my other models it won't sustain vertical for very long with my 6x4 prop on a 2000kv motor.
So it could do with a bit more thrust.
I might see if i can fit a 7 inch prop with some side cut outs.

I must say it flies very smooth and inverted is just as good.

Thanks.

The music is an early "Midnight Oil" track. Actually I might go back and use Midnight Oil music for all of my clips. Anyone know if I will be breaching copyright

I am editing the next video now and it should be good.
