Build Log
Hostetler's Cessna 195
I've wanted to build a large Cessna 195 for a long time. I was never satisfied with the limited selection of plans or kits that were available.
While at the 08 Toledo Show, I saw a beautiful 1/4 scale 195 hanging above Wendel Hostetler's booth.. My friend, RC Miker, noticed that I was ogling the large model. The next thing that I knew, he purchased the plans, and made them a present to me !!! Since that time, I've been acquiring the bits and pieces that I'll need for the build. As I start construction, I will post pics of these items. Knowing that I was planning to build this Cessna, another friend, Glenn McIntosh, asked if he could join in the fun. Glenn is a very talented modeler, with skill that far surpass my own. Since that time, Glenn has been working on prototype parts for our birds. I'll start this thread out with pics of the full size bird that I plan to replicate, and some pics of Glenn's pieces. |

Geez Tom, do you ever stop and take a break? This is going to be one to follow as I can see with all the homework that has already been completed.

Thanks, gentlemen !!!
Yes, Glenn and I have many hours into the research. Although I haven't glued a single stick, I'm enjoying this project immensely. Break ??? Carey, what in the world are you talking about ??? LOL I'm enjoying myself too much to slow down. I may curtail my building some, when flying season arrives. |

Thanks, Ron.
I love the classic look of radial powered aircraft. The design suits itself to our modeling needs as it allows us to place large motors up front, aiding in balance issues. With that in mind, one of my earliest purchase for this build was a Saito 450 radial. This motor installation will require extensive modifation to the airframe. the extra work will be worth it, as the big Saito produces an awesome sound, and will allow the model to fly easily at 1/2 power, or less. |

With the motor having three cylinders and six glow plugs, I felt that onboard glow was needed. I bought this McDaniels/Sonictronics unit.
It will handle all six glow plugs. |

One Idem that needed to be made is the control wheel yoke. After 5 prototypes, I hope this one will do. Its made from 1/4" inch balsa sheet. After sanding and shaping, Soaked it w/ thin CA, then polished it with a diamond bit to smooth out the CA, Its in primer. This is a mold for casting it in resin.
Here is a 1:1 photo of the yoke. |

Glenn will send the yoke to me. I'll use it as a plug to make a silicone mould. The parts will then be cast in resin.
I'm new to resin casting. My friend, Don Olsen, is going to coach me through the process. We will cast door handles and window cranks, too. Look for a mini "How To" when I get to that point. Another item that Glenn and I will be using, is a nav light system from Electro Dynamics. It comes with red and green nav light, a strobe and lanidng light. It is a fully plug and play system, making installation a breeze. http://electrodynam.com/rc/EDR-117/index.shtml |

Tom,
I'll be making notes on my set of of Hostetler C-195 plans. It's not a project that will get on the bench for a while, but when it does, I'll have the Crump Aero-Modeling Group in my corner. Fuel tank valve, door handles, man-o-man, this is going to be a blast! I went on www.airliners.net and downloaded tons of pics. EJWash |

Well, I've been talking about building this, maybe it's time to get started.
The kit from PCK http://www.precisioncutkits.com/, came well packed. Parts are bagged and grouped according to the structures they build. The sheet and strip stock is well marked, too. |

I usually start out by building the tail section. The outer framework of the fin and rudder need to be glued. The completed parts are a 1/2" thick, so the cutter made pieces out of 1/4" that are laminated together.
This all went well. The ribs are much smaller that 1/2" wide, however. This means that they cannot be installed while the outer edges are on the building board. I spent a few hours trying to figure out how to complete the fin assembly. I decided that the pieces needed to be assembled while holding them in my hand. The center of the ribs and outer pieces were marked, as were the rib locations. I then carefully CA'd the ribs in place. It was not fun. LOL It came out well, though. |
