AD4 Skyraider, The Able Dog Buildthread

Hi guys !
I've only posted some threads about jets (EDF or pushers) on E-Zone till now... But i also like warbirds ! I've built some of them out of Depron, like the Hawker Typhoon or the Douglas Skyraider...
I've always liked the AD4 ! My Dad often told me he saw them in action during the War of Algeria ; and it seems he'd been very impressed !
i've built a parkflyer version of the AD4 (1100 mm WS) for a magazine, 9 years ago, but i'm now wanting an enlarged and powerfull version with flaps and retracts. It'll be 1500 mm WS (60"), and will weight around 1200 / 1300 grams. The airframe will be out of 3 and 6 mm Depron, with plywood and balsa reinforcements where needed, and will be entirely glassed to get a nice smooth finish. I'll go for a Korean War painstcheme, hopefully the VA 195 "Dambusters", if i can find enough docs...

The construction starts with the lower part of the fuselage : It's a sort of box. All the 6 mm Depron formers are glued on a 3 mm Depron base before glueing the sidewalls... Of course, it's the better moment to add the rods (for elev, rudder, tailwheel steering and retract).

Then, the upper part of the fuselage is built on the other side of the 3 mm Depron Base. All 6 mm Depron formers and the cockpit saddle are glued before skinning with some bent 3 mm Depron pannels.

The nose area requires a very big work... Hell is in details ! Exhaust pipes zone, upper and lower intakes, flammes deflectors... All those details contribute to give it's personality to the airplane !

Worked (a lot) on wings last night... They're out of 3 and 6 mm Depron with a main longeron made of 6 mm Depron and 6x3 mm pinewood. False leading edge, flaps and ailerons articulation secondary longeron are from 3 mm balsa. The other secondary longeron is from 3 mm Depron. Of course, retracts mounts require a rigid structure. This structure is out of 1 mm plywood and is fixed to the main longeron.
The wings are built in the same time.

When all the wooden pieces are glued, just add the flaps and retracts rods and ailerons servos wires before skinning the extrados with 3 mm Depron pannels.

Now, she needs wing tips (foam), and leading edges (balsa)...

GGRN…nice subject…I enjoyed your Me-262 & Ta-183 builds…I found this while looking for info on VA-195

On May 1, 1951, the crew of the VA-195 squadron departed from the USS Princeton in their eight AD-4 Skyraiders with World War II era Mk-13 torpedoes hanging below their planes and escorted by eight Corsairs. Most of the VA-195 pilots were never trained to drop torpedoes, or fly in the narrow 40-foot wide canyon low enough to drop the torpedoes effectively. Six of the eight torpedoes hit the target, completely destroying one sluice gate and severely damaging another. The water behind the Hwachon Dam was released and the Chinese Communist Forces could no longer control the flooding of the river.
The attack on the dam by the AD-4 Squadron VA-195 earned them the nickname "Dambusters." The Skyraiders attack on May 1, 1951, was the last time the United States Navy used torpedoes in an actual act of war.
