Great find xandrios. You have no idea how much time I spent looking for this and how much time it would have saved me.

At least now we know why the mod works.

Ironically the logic I used that the short pin was somehow critical was correct but I got the wrong short pin. A3 not B4 is the PS_Present pin. Be interested to see what folks come up with playing around with these. I have added a reference to your diagram to the original post.

Excellent thread fellas.
I'm now wondering if the voltage regulation can be raised to 13.5-13.8 volt using xandrios's great find/mod along with the internal trimmer i think was mentioned earlier.

Yeah. It now seems that there are a couple of other pin combinations that will get this PSU up and running. I've found 2 others already. It's gonna be a fun week....

If you are really keen, pins B5 and B6 are I2C data signals. You could probably get this thing displaying its status on a computer screen.

Revision for DL580 G3 current measurement.


I'll have to revise the current measurement post. I used between 35 amps and 100 for testing. I'll be back with the correct pinout soon.

Yeah. Servers rely on these pins to monitor PS status. I don't see a fan speed output pin on this supply, although it may be integrated within the I2C stream. I have yet to see any monitoring software that can access the fan speed on these PSU's though. This leaves me to think there is no way to externally adjust fan speed. Damn!!

"This is a simple way to measure the current draw from a DL580 G3 PSU. The voltage output is directly proportional to the current where 1v = 10 amps. So when your pulling 100 amps out of this supply you will get a reading of 10v. It comes in handy when you don't have a large external shunt resistor on hand. Original pic by jj604."

??? I measure 2.17V on this pin with no load ???

Yeah. Sorry about that. I'll be back with the correct pinout soon. I had a lot of wires running for the test. My voltage regulation/mod for the DL580 is guaranteed to work though. I've set up several PSU's that way. Thanks for the heads up...

I am still having problem trying to reduce the fan noise for HP PROLIANT DL580/ML570G3 RPS REDUNDANT POWER SUPPLY. P/N: 348114R-B21 that stated by JJ604 in the first thread. I wonder if anyone have pictures on the connections to where the resistor go or what to use to lower the noise.

I thank you soo much xandrios. I went to Radio Shacks but they do not have 2w 10ohm, so I pick up the 1w 10ohm and it is so quiet. I would rate it as equal to a desktop computer psu

I am confused why everyone is trying to lower the fan speed. This is a high power supply and wil certainly not put out the high power with the fan running at a slow speed to reduce the noise. If you wanted a lower power supply, you should have saved some money and bought a lower power supply. I personally appreciate the high power of this supply and accept the noise. I have 4 of these supplies.

Xandrios - I think I speak for all of us that own this great supply monitoring this thread in saying THANK YOU for sharing your findings.

Few hobbiest use these server power supplies at any where near a 100% load for over an hour much less 24/7. Also most do not have them in a fairly high temperature environment. My IBM 235s in series for 24V @ 30amps. spend most of their under load time at under50%.

Yes jj604. Thank you also. 24/7 or 1hr or 1/2 hour probably would not matter. I doubt you could run at full load for 20 minutes with a fan running at at half speed. Just my opinion. Have not tried. I have run at 8OA for 1/2hr with regular fan speed without heating problems.
