Sanyo VPC HD100 Eagle River Alaska (South Fork)

This was a quick and dirty test of the Sanyo VPC HD100 on my Twinstar II. The preceeding flight I had the camera pitched up too high, this flight it was pitched down a bit too much. It was bright out, but not directly sunny.

The video file link above was reduced from 451 MB MP4 file, to 24MB WMV file. It lost tremendous resolution.

Here's the original, no compression

Twinstar II over South Fork Eagle River Alaska (7 min 46 sec)

Nice area! Tight landing too. Do you have a Vimeo account?

You could show off the video as it was intended. I'd like to see more from that cam. My go to camera store doesn't have that model, www.jr.com, where did you get it?

WalMart, $199 It seems pretty good, but I'm a bit concerned about the focus. It drifts sometimes, even when set to infinite....

I believe this particular camera is marketed only through WalMart....

Plan on 3+ including the conversion on their end. Will this be raw footage from the camera or did you edit and save as another format & codec?

Uhh, ERr.. Sorry, Raw Footage..... What should I use to edit? Windows movie maker? Do you know why the MP4 file looks herky jerky, but the WMV file looks smooth?.

It comes out of the camera MP4

I'd like to see the raw footage. Keep uploading.

Never worked with MP4. ( I believe it's equivalent to H.264) I mainly deal with .MOV .AVI using the Xvid codec. (MP4, H.264, .Mov.... They're all related )

Yup, That's right MP4 H.264
I'm over 50% uploaded....

Of course, with Raw Footage, the audio can be grating with the mike right between the motors....

Now that was a great video! You covered A lot of area and gave us a great tour of all your neighbors. Man do you ever live right in and at the mountains. Very smooth flying and a great landing. Is the Twinstar that quiet or did you edit it down? The vimeo ought to be great! I wonder how good the video will be when you get some wonderful clear sunny days?

That can be eliminated with editing. Mute the camera volume and lay a sound track down.

Thanks! I was disapointed at the video quality of the WMV file you saw. I did reduce the audio level with Windows movie maker while I compressed the file size. But it's reasonably quiet though.... Of course the sun came out later....... Yah, It has a color-less appearence sometimes in winter. But spring is just around the corner, and we all should be ready with our planes and cameras!!

In my limited experience and knowledge, the mpeg4 .264 compression is very tight, but you need good horsepower to play it back. WMV has good compression compromises, and it's relatively painless in the way it insulates you from learning all about codecs, compression, etc. Just pick a final resolution and balance bitrate against file size.

One thing dedicated video cams usually have over most still cams that moonlight as video clip cams is that changes in exposure are smoother. I've looked at some of my old Nikon 3700 footage, and in high contrast scenes you can really see the exposure "step" up and down as it reacts to the scene.

Anyone make the jump from WMM to Vegas for editing? I've got it all warmed up and ready to go, but WMM is still so welcoming with its easy-to-achieve mediocrity.
