From modified parts from various source I assembled this rocket powered glider. Some of the features can be seen in the photo such as a small flat wing to handle the acceleration and twin rudders out of the rocket blast. On board is a two cell lipo and a small brushed motor speed control which provides the 5 volts to run the receiver and 3 servos and the current to ignite the rocket motor (controlled by the throttle stick on the transmitter). I use a short high start to get it up, trimmed and level, then fire the rocket resulting in an exciting swoosh to altitude, a white smoke trail all the way. A nice long glide ensues with an occasional thermal providing even longer post-power flights.

I use C or D sized motors with the parachute ejection charge removed to prevent blowing off the front of the power pod. I have tried multiple-stage motors which donít carry that charge but the non business end still needs to be plugged to stop the ignition charge for the second stage.

Model Aviation magazine had a brief article about the simple fun of 2 channel 1/2 A glow powered models. I could not agree more with the theme of that article. I have four pictured below that I fly whenever the nostalgia bug bites. My flying companions are amazed by the size, the sound and the performance of these planes. They are simple and inexpensive to operate, clean up easily and fun. Duration flying and dead stick landings provide the all the challenge even a veteran flyer could ask for.

My main flying partner and I continue to have fun hauling small gliders to altitude and releasing. The release mechanism uses rubber bands to secure it to the top of the tug as described in a previous blog. If you have seen that one you will note I have a new tug airplane which was assembled from junk parts. (The previous tug is no more - short story that will remain untold). The wing on tug 2 is from a modified glider wing given to me by the infamous "Full Throttle Otto". Besides the rudder-only controlled Hawkeye glider you will note a new parasite plane. This is one of those miniature Radians with all the electronics removed (the previous owner did not want the air-frame which we restored to flying condition.) This mini Radian is a passive glider set to circle as it descends. Clearly upwind releases are required but we have not lost it yet. The release mechanism will accommodate both parasite gliders. It is fun to land the tug and watch the little Radian in slow free flight mode and especially satisfying to record prolonged thermal flights and hand catches with the rudder-only Hawkeye.

Here is a set-up that has been gobs of fun. The tug is set up for 3 channels which leaves channel 4 on the left stick to operate the rudder on the little Hawkeye glider. The retract switch is used to release the glider. The mechanism shown in the photos holds the glider securely and the release is reliable. Basically the glider is released high and a little upwind. A spotter is required to keep track of the glider while the tug is landed as rapidly as possible. Once the tug is on the ground the pilot gets to leisurely fly the glider rudder only using the left stick. It is a little challenging at first but fun to catch thermals and land at your feet. After all rudder only used to be the rule, not the exception.

I still like to feel the pull of a plane on lines; still get dizzy. The Flight Streak flies as an electric as well as I remember on a McCoy 35. I get two 3 minute flights on a 3 cell 2200 lipo which slides into the thick wing or a single more spirited flight on a 1300: One can stand and do figure 8's for the entire flight.

Here is my fleet of twins and a couple of four motor craft. All fly well with the exception of the derelict hand-me-down TwinStar but I am working on it. The foam "toy" glider has four GWS IPS motors in pusher configuration. It has a flying stab and vertical fin for pitch and roll/yaw control. The Multiplex Cargo has four speed 400 brushed motors with a single 50 amp ESC on 3 cells. It is a fantastic flying plane.
