I spotted these two trucks bringing containers into Kandahar yesterday. This is "the norm" for trucks here. I saw a few similar ones in Iraq, but it seems to be more common here in Afghanistan. I dont know what the heck these folks think, but these are some seriously gawdy trucks!

Hey guys, I stumbled onto these fellas today. A crew from Boeing that flys the Scan Eagles out here. So, they let me take some pictures and I even got a video of one of the "landings". Great guys out there too. I had a good time.

This thing uses Futaba servos in it, a true turn spinner and an APC prop too. Pretty cool use of "off the shelf" stuff. Im sure there is more in there somewhere, but thats the stuff I saw right off.

I'll post the video here as soon as I get it uploaded. Net is pretty slow here.

Hey guys, look what we found today! There are 2 race tracks just down the dusty road from where we live. Seems there are about 15 guys who go out there and do some bashing. No acctual races, just fun. Most of them are running stock brushed trucks like the Slash, and the Revo. So, the guys and I will have to find a way to show them whats up. Plus, we gotta get some races setup with some prizes somehow. That makes it alot more fun. Spectators like seeing races more than bashing IMO anyway. Events are where its at!

Im thinkin 1/8th scale 4wd buggy with a Castle Monster brushless on 6S. My wallet thinks Nikko toy truck from Walmart. So, we will all probably end up with some "short course" trucks and put some Castle brushless stuff in them and some 2 or 3 cell lipos. That should keep the cost down a bit for the average joe.

As of right now, flying anything is forbidden. I'll work on that as time goes by. There is no reason we shouldnt be able to fly something like a Slow Stick or a Super Fly over in the same area as the track. I did however find out that there is an indoor place to fly here. Only one guy using it with a heli, but, I think those little Parkzone Micro Cubs would be a hoot. Imagine pylon racing indoors with 4 or 5 of those at a time. THAT sounds like a hoot to me.

I took my camera on the "stroll" to the Mess Hall yesterday for breakfast. Its about 1/2 mile away, down the long dusty road in the picture. Everyone loves a nice mouthful of Afghan dust before breakfast! So, me and the guys made the trek for some bad coffee, biscuits, with gravy of course, bacon and a park bench seat in a tent.

Of course, once we got there you would have thought it was Outback Steak House on a Saturday night! "Wooden bench for 4 please". It was another 20 minutes before we made it in the tent, then 5-10 more before you can get some breakfast. However, this particular "Dining Facility" serves omlettes in the morning! Cooked to order, with REAL eggs. Cant argue with that.

We had our chow, and headed off to the flight line for work. As luck would have it, while I was doing some planning, I went outside for a quick break and guess what was landing. A couple Ospreys. Snapped a couple pics, but, since I cant really show the airfield, ya get what ya get! Pretty cool machines though.

Ok, today is my "day off" or "reset day" as they call it. So, Im going down to see about a rumor I heard. A possible RC truck track. More to follow on that.

Hey guys, all is well here. Busy, but good. We are getting into the swing of things pretty well, missions are kickin and we are figuring out Kandahar and the surrounding area.

I got my very first package in the mail today. Just so happens it was from Dan (known around here as Deckert). Inside the box was nothing but vacuum packed home made COOKIES! Let me tell ya'll, I opened that box, and within one hour, it was empty! These guys got ahold of them and it was on. I estimate that there was 40-50 cookies of various kinds. They sure didnt last long. I reached in and grabbed a bag for myself and almost drew back a bloody stump!

So, Deckert, THANK YOU and all of your buddies that helped! It sure was a nice change of pace to have some home made cookies. Now I need to go run 5 miles or so.

Hey folks, as some of you know, I made it to Kandahar a couple days ago and got my internet up and running now.

So, initial impressions of this place...

...the first thing anyone here notices is that we have a "Poop pond" about 200 meters up wind from our "house". Yeah, the smell of human crap blowing accross the base all day. How nice!

... next thing I noticed is the food. Not impressed. It will keep you alive, but thats about it. Now, Im not REALLY complaining, it could be MUCH worse. During the invasion of Iraq I had nothing but MRE's for 4 months and I lived out of a truck. The bad thing is you cant tell the difference between the smell from the poop pond and the mess hall!

... my room is, well, good enough. I have 5 other Warrant Officers and me in a 2 man room. We are stacked up pretty tight in here. And it will be like this for the entire year. Again, Im not REALLY complaining, but, Im not over joyed with it either. Considering Im in a decent building with a "normal" bed, internet service and this time we have RUNNING WATER in here, it aint all that bad.

... weather is, well, HOT! Its 90ish outside already and it will hit 120-130 this summer. Big change from Tennessee where just 2 weeks ago or so we had snow all over the place. Its also dusty as heck here. Reminds me very much of Iraq during my last two year long tours there.

... Our mission seems like it should be pretty good. As long as I stay...Continue Reading

Hey guys, just wanted to say thanks to everyone for all the support, help, comments etc... I have less than 24 hours until I will be "wheels up" on my way to Afghanistan for another year long tour.

I'll be flying UH-60s again, this time in the southern part of Afghan. Crappy place, but, we always make the best of it.

So, stay tuned here in my blog for pictures and updates through the year. I'll give ya'll and idea of what we see over there, what we deal with, where we live and what we do.

Thanks again, and see ya all in a year!

I went flying down at Peeler Park in Nashville this past Sunday. I took most of my big stuff with and had a really great afternoon of flying. Got to "maiden" my newest plane... Hobby Lobbys famous 12' Telemaster.

This was for sure my last day out at the flying field for a little over a year. Another tour in Afghanistan.... uuuhhhggg.
