Here's a few pictures of the external mic mod I attempted. I use this as a hat cam when flying my airplanes. After finishing, it seems there is a high frequency noise when I speak or when louder noises are heard.

I have experimented with a low pass filter during editing and it does work to get rid of most of the high frequency noise. The media player equalizer also worked to filter it.

I used the $2 neewer mic from ebay. The M10 camera is much easier to take apart then the sj4000. Its just a total of 6 screws and the whole thing slides out once the plug ports are clear of the recesses. Make sure to remove the battery and card from camera. The soldering task didn't go quite as planned. The mic is surface mount and there are no pins. I heated up the mic with the soldering iron and it released but the positive circuit board trace broke off. Luckily, I was able to solder the wire lead to the backside of the board as seen from the picture. The traces are extremely small.
