Proximity flying.

Pretty boring, and yes, I know I need to turn down my roll gain, but the BT dongle was being cranky this morning.
808 keychain could probably use a focus adjustment and a better mount.

The other 4 motors from the mini-H I decided to make a mini-funquad. I started with my super simple frame ( 2 arms overlapping in the center ) made out of 1/2 by 1/4 basswood, pinned it in place with a Flip 1.5MWC, used Plush 10a ESC's ( blheli 9.4 ), turnigy 1811 2900kv, and 4x2.5 props.

1/2x1/4x8" (x2) Basswood arms - JoAnne's ( ~$2 )
Witespy Flip 1.5 MWC ( ~$20 )
Turnigy Plush 10a ESC - BlHeli 9.4* (x4) HobbyKing ( $9 )
Turnigy 1811 2900kv (x4) HobbyKing ( $10 )
4x25 Props (x2) HobbyKing ( $2/6pc ) - Use 5x3 Gemfans, far less hassle and more thrust.

Misc items include Rx, 3s battery ( 30-40a rating, 800-1600mAh ), lighting, and connectors of your choice.

A few words of warning, the little props at high RPM are a bear to balance, but it is necessary to balance as best as can as well as enabling 42Hz LPF in the sketch. Without proper balancing the quad will behave very erratically and will probably be uncontrollable.

As can be seen in one of the pictures below it's AUW is under 300g and that is with 1600mAh battery. On my flight this morning I got 8.5 minutes and the charger put back in 1000mAh, so when the weather is not sub-0 I should be able to do 10 minutes per flight. In retrospect I should CA or hot glue the two arms in place, clean up the standoffs with some m3 nuts, and snip the wiring down to size but otherwise it's a blast to fly. Very stable flight pattern and responsive even with an oversized battery.

For the lighting I'm using basic 12v strips, I stripped the ESC and added a jumper from the ESC to strip to reduce the number of wires into the wiring harness.

* BlHeli 9.4 added some code to support very high RPM switching, I don't know if this would work with BlHeli pre-9.4 I have not tried. As always choose a flashed ESC platform of your choice, don't go with the Plush just because I listed it here.

Another week, another build. Tried two orientations of a micro octo and neither flew all that well. The flat, checkerboard octo flew the best, but had problems with blade strikes and didn't want to enlarge it again... so I came up with this.

Some 1/2 square basswood arms and 3/8 basswood for the deck. Probably overkill, but it's solid. 1811 2900kv motors, 10amp plush ESC, CIRUS SE 2.0 FC, FrSky Rx, 1600mAh 3s underneath. ~360g AUW including battery, once I have a few flights on it I will add lights and clean up the wiring so it will probably be a wash on weight. Probably going to outfit this with my 808 #16v2 D like eyeonsky and his micro FPV.

Need some tuning, but already flew better than the octo's that preceded it. Plan on taking the other 4 motors and making a micro X layout with 4x2.5 props as well.

This is v1.5 with some added tweaks.


1) Safe eeinit: Does not load a default motor layout, will automatically bring up the motor layout selection, if you back out there is NO MIX and model will not fly. No more crashing the first time out because you forgot to load Quadcopter X.
2) Camstab with configurable differential mixing. This adds "Servo Mixing" to be "none" aka regular camera stabilizatioin or "diff" for differential or vtail mix.
3) Show verion on main menu
4) Widen gyro calibration range to deal with extreme cold

Code base from which this is built.

Trivial first attempt at vtail camstab mixing. This changes the output on M7 and M8 to the differential with Roll as the dominant ( servos pointing towards or away from each other ).

If it rolls in the wrong direction, invert the roll gain.
If it pitches in the wrong direction, reverse the servo connections.
