I started this kit well over a year ago and with a cross-country move am just now getting the workshop set back up to get at it again.

Heinz Bar's "Red 13" from JG1.

Airfield/FMS 1400mm P-51D - Aluminum Covering & Scale Modifications

This build blog is the culmination of many experimental techniques crafted to overcome the dreaded "basketball" texture of EPO foam. The effort actually started with the model being covered a few times with the covering being removed and replaced!

This could easily be applied to any model with an aluminum-skin look. This kit was an earlier Version 6 (V.6).

Modifications include:
  • Cockpit modification
  • Machine Gun Update
  • Aluminizing
  • Panels and Rivets
  • Weathering
  • Hidden Tail Linkages (Rudder and Elevator)
  • Single Piece Wing
  • Wiring Harness
  • Split Canopy (later V.7 + versions include this mod in the kit)

Will she fly with all that weight? Absolutely - and the AUW is still under 6 lbs total.

Finally, a very special thank you goes out to others who ventured here before me: Tom Hunt, Sandancer, Spencer6891, and others.

Welcome to Comstock's blog!

I build, illustrate, and spend much of my time working on warbirds! Totally insane for aviation and WW2 modelling some might suggest, but I think I've landed at the right place on the web.

I'm a modeller at heart and probably spend too much time in the hangar - but as an old modeler once told me, "There's no rush, learn from others, and do your best - all within budget."

More to come!

Starmax 79" B-17G "Texas Raiders" - Scale Updates

The near 80" Starmax B-17G is a great kit to modify into a great scale warbird - easily and within a relatively low budget.

Modifications include:
  • Crew placement (using Dollar Store Army Figures)
  • Custom Paint
  • Updated Cowls
  • New Top Turret, Ball Turret, Chin Turret, Tail Turret
  • Weathering
  • Wheel Updates, including Support Struts
  • Machine Guns
  • Antenna
  • Hidden Tail Linkages (Rudder and Elevator)
  • Single Piece Wing
  • Wiring Harness
  • Transport Box

The Starmax kit has some of the better scale form factor aspects and minimizes much of the fabrication required to bring some of the other Forts up to par. That's not to say Starmax didn't miss some key areas (those cowls and the R2D2 Top Turret?) - but the limited panel depth and overall outline are fairly good. Most enhancements are extremely simple and low cost and greatly add to the overall appearance of the bird.

I couldn't pass up building "TR" (Texas Raiders) from the CAF - 381st Bombardment Grp (Heavy), 533rd Bomb Squadron. Plus, ole' Shep Payne's classic diorama of the crashed "Lady in Pink" was a 381st ship.

Let's do this:
