Last weekend I made a trip to Lahr (Black Forest Region) to watch some exciting Aircombat flying. Those models are 1:12 scale and although the majority is still flying IC engines, most twins were already using electric power. At the same weekend, they also flew the so called "Gnumpf-Cup" - a pylon race event with simple, identical models and .25 motors. There is a stock class (standard motor/muffler) and an unlimited class (any .25 motor/tuned pipe).

Please find attached the complete results of the German Indoor Aerobatics Championship 2008. As it is an Open Championship, we also had pilots from the Czech Republik, the Netherlands, Austria, Lithuania, Slovenia and even from Finland competing. It was hard to beat the quality of flying from last year, but I think these guys moved it up yet another notch. Unfortunately the models from the competitors from Finland got lost in transport and they had to fly with borrowed models. Some pilots also escaped the photo-shooting, so I had to use pictures from the qualifying.

Here are some video clips:

The Top-Five of all classes:

1. Karl-Ernst Overdick

2. Marek Plichta (CZ)

3. Tjark Schwartau

4. Florian Nagel

The first Model Fair of the 2008 season, where the public gets to see the new models. Luckily I went on Saturday, when the weather was pretty good for mid March, but you can see it in the video clip yourself:

The Indoor Fest in Prague took place from 19.- 20. January 2008. This year, some pilots travelled long distances to participate in the first Selection Contest FAI F6B (AeroMusicals) for the World Air Games 2009 in Turin/Italy.

Indoor pilots from the DMFV (Deutscher Modellflieger Verband = German Model Flying Association) competed in Prague 2004 at the first CZ Indoor Aerobatics Championship, so this was a good opportunity to go there again.

On 9th December 2007, the second round of the NL F3P Championship took place in Loon op Zand. As four members of the German Indoor Team were invited to perform some show flying "Wall-Halla style" (and to compete of course), I went there as well. It was worth the trip, because we all had a great day. A big thank you to Job Verkerke for having the DMFV Indoor Team as guests in your house from Saturday to Sunday.

Back to the basics - Control Line Flying. There are not very many competitors left doing this kind of flying, but when they meet at the local flying field, it is like entering a time warp: Model techniques, engine noise and odors from the past.

Wolfgang Mrotzek always had a faible for exotic airplanes. He initially designed the prototype for his F-35 Lightning II for a 90mm EDF, but changed to a Lambert Kolibri instead. Here are some impressions:

For my 50th birthday, my Indoor-team surprised me with a very special present. First they gave me a "3D puzzle" of the Xtreme3000 (the latest design of Martin Müller), and just when I said I would hardly ever fly such a unique model, Martin came flying into the room with the RTF version and told me those where just spare parts.

Now I have my very own model, signed by my Indoor-team, weighing 142g with AXI 2203/46 and Vortex 2/350mAh.

Thanks a lot guys!

I bought a US Spektrum DX7 to gain some practical 2.4GHz experience, only to find out, that the radio does not seem to comply with European Regulations (despite carrying the CE symbol, the peak output is way too high).

So when the Futaba T6EX 2.4GHz became available, I bought this radio and put it into a model to compete in Fun Flying Racing (FFR) - Open Class. With my standard 35MHz radio, I always had to ensure not to point the tx antenna towards the model, while the rx antenna was shielded by the drive system (Battery, ESC, motor plus cables) - quite a nuisance during racing.

RC has never been so easy. Completely troublefree with 2.4GHz and I even have the results to prove it. First place on 20th May 2007 at Menzelen, Third place 03rd June 2007 in Münster (Despite coming third, I still had the fastest FunJet - only beaten by a ProJeti - with the same drive system - and a superfast Micro-Jet).

Amazing how little is left after almost three days of filming.

The Team from the popular German TV station Pro7 put together a nice video about the German Indoor Aerobatics Championship 2007.

Of course it comes with German commentary only, and some facts are wrong, but nevertheless you should enjoy it.
