Well, it didn't last long. Only a few flights before i got stuck really, really high in a tree. Luckily with a small lead pipe and string I was able to rattle it enough to knock my camera off it. The quad is still in the tree though firmly hooked by it's prop guards . Just happy it wasn't a Phantom.

This was my first drone but i've been flying planes for years. Not exactly the same but it helped. I learned something though. I had a "faux pro" SJ4000 stuck to the bottom. It carried the weight ok but it required gentle, slow movements. Once it would turn or lose altitude past a certain rate it was hard to counter. Descending would result in a hard landing, etc. Good to understand when strapping your camera to a toy. Weak brushed motors. It flew much better without a camera. A Mobius or other micro camera would probably do better.

Last year at major surf contests there were often half a dozen Phantoms in the air at any given time. Often a few feet from the competitors. Now they are banned except official drones and only one at a time, and a higher altitude. Just on observation, no judging. It looked dangerous and being broadcast worldwide wasn't good for the hobby. Here's a couple shots of drones at the 2016 Volcom Pipe Pro.

Interesting sign of the times. No "unofficial" drones at the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing starting this year. It was a little chaotic last year.

Getting pretty serious with quads and surfing here. People with next to no experience flying into the lineup . Took this image from a couple months ago of Kelly Slater dropping in with a drone in his face. Crazy times.

Picked this up for $26 on Ebay. Just came in. Gave it a toss in the living room and seems to fly great. Can't wait for a larger room or a very calm day.

A new paint job for the Stryker and light winds this weekend. It's on.

Not really rc related but flight related. Paragliding looks like so much fun and peaceful but the stakes are so high. Good conditions for paragliding today. Watching them made me consider trying.

Will it fly? Elmers foam board, paper removed with a scrap epp kfm step. All i have for power is 2100kv aoxing motor. With gws 7035 or 8x4, not sure yet. And...either 900mah 2s or 1000 3s. I may need to order some new gear for a plane like this? Hoping it'll be a floaty calm day 3d plane but will probably need a small 3s for that. Adding electronic today...

Rebuilt a Stryker I had only flown once. Put an old Tower Pro motor (unsure of kv), 18 amp mag 8 esc, 1000 20c 3 cell, 2 9gr servos, and AR400 rx. Flew slowish but with authority to loop. Not unlimited vertical. Was shooting for something lighter than stock for smaller parks. Video next flight...

Grey skies at Makapu'u the other day. Typically windy but great flying when it's not. Although risky flying over water. Some occasional slope soaring from the cliff behind this shot but mostly paragliders and hang gliders land here.

I've read about using denatured alcohol as a quick release for hot glue. I tried regular drugstore isopropyl alcohol and it was a clean break in 5 seconds. Game changer.

Been reading about the Robbe Gemini and Larry's Capricorn for a while now. I thought i'd get around to buying a Gemini but due to the difficulty of finding one and expense, i figured i'd build one.

This is made out of Cellfoam, similar to depron. 10mm in the center and 6 mm on the outer wings. Epp sponsons. Lightly glue gunned together, it will be powered by a blue wonder 1500 kv motor, 2s800 . 18 amp esc, and probably an 8x4 gws prop. I gotta add the gear and weigh it still. Hopefully maiden next weekend. Just wanted to post some pics of the build.

This is a plane my Grandfather built. Probably in 92-93 or so. He was a B-17 pilot in WW2.

I remember him being very excited about the future of electric flight although i wasn't into the hobby at the time. I always went to the field with him as a kid and watched him fly gas planes. Due to the delicate nature and expense, i never got into it until recently.

He passed away in 96 and left a lot of gadgets behind. He lived in Kansas City and i'm now in Hawaii. I would have brought everything back with me but i was only able to get this one. I drove it to Denver and my Mom later flew it back at her side. I don't think it would have made it shipped. It's a beautifully crafted plane.

Just wanted to post some pics of it. Does anybody know if this was a kit or a specific model? I do know it was supposed to be electric and it seems pretty custom. Heres to you Grandpa.

I had a lipo burst into flames tonight. I was lucky there wasn't more damage. It happened in between my computer, monitor, and external hard drive. I make websites for a living so theres a good 5 years of work. It was a Thunderpower 2 cell and a GWS charger c3-lp. It plugs into the wall and charges both 2 and 3 cells. Both are just a few months old and used maybe twice a week. Anyhow, i plugged a 2 cell into the 3 cell adapter, doh! I've always been really careful with this, just not careful enough. Only 1 adapter at a time from now on. I threw half a cup of coffee at it. Just had time to burn my desk a little. Just a reminder, don't be dumb like me.
