Here is an old (~1985) Probar catalog. Sorry about the quality, it was a poorly Xeroxed packet when I got it....Continue Reading

Well I have been (re)bitten by the sailing bug. I raced Marbleheads (50/800s) for a while many years ago, but gave it up. Lately I am getting back into it, but I am starting small. I am building 3 Blackstar SSs. It is a small (20") sport boat with a cat rig. Chris's fiberglass work is fantastic. since I am looking for somewhat heavy duty, sailing on the Chesapeake bay, I made some modifications to beef the boats up a bit. But they are all being built identically for OD racing.

Here are the modifications.
1) Used Dubro V-tail mixer to make rudder hinge.
2) Replaced brass mast pin with stainless
3) Moved keel forward 1"
4) Moved servo and winch up on deck

I am using 4 AAA batteries and the AUW is 1lb 10oz.

Two are done and the third is about 3/4 of the way.

I think I may make another hull, looking more like an IOM. I will use the same fin and rudder. I am not sure if I will stick with the cat rig or go with a sloop.

My friend asked me what I am working on.

I am working on another 47" 3D plane. I started a series a little while back that originally was to extend the 3DHS SHP by a couple of inches. Well, over time I designed new wings and a new tail and it has evolved into an entirely new plane, except for the canopy. This latest iteration is two inches longer and will sport an Omega 130g motor.

The second picture has an older model in the middle that is three inches longer and has a Torque 2818 in it.

It is winter and we have 17" of snow on the ground. I am ready for the indoor season. Here is my latest. It is the guts from a Sukhoi plus another servo and a brushless motor and esc. The fuse is from a Guillows kit. The wings and tail are Depron. All up weight with battery is 1.25oz.

Here are the pics of my latest project. It is a seaplane conversion for a friend.

I just finished my latest plane. It is a scratch built 49" 3D plane. It weighs 39oz and flies with a Torque 2818/900 on a 3S2200.

Well, the Katana and the AJ Extra are no more. The Katana met an untimely demise, and the AJ Extra has been mothballed. They have been replaced by an AJ Slick and a 350 watt 3D plane of my own design. I have been extremely pleased with both.

Here is a picture of my fleet. I have tried an awful lot of different planes, then pared down and settled on these. They are all a little different so there is not much redundancy, and they are all tops in their style.

From front left, row by row they are:

DWFoamies Yak Jr. - Only flown once so far. Front yard flying
Ryan Bearcat - Fast, really fast. Looks great in the air
Fliton Extra 330 Mini - Excellent hack around plane. Harriers, knife edge all sorts of precision 3D really close in.
GWS EStarter - With a buddy box for teaching people to fly
Hyperion Sniper - Messing around. Flying in close, trying new 3D stuff
3D Hobby Shop Katana 47" - Great 3D, a little fast. Good for when there is a little breeze.
Fliton AJ Extra 330 - Been working on getting this right (batteries). Hopefully a scaled up version of the Extra Mini.
3D Hobby Shop Extra 300 SHP 47" - Excellent 3D. Really makes me look good.

Attached is a list of planes that my friend and I have had. I think it is all of them, but I may have missed one or two. I have written a few words about each.

One thing that really bothers me is when people call a plane a pice of junk. Typically there will be 4 or 5 posts saying how wonderfull a plane is, and then someone will com on and say that it is . I do not think that everyone realizes that other's comments on airplanes need to be taken in context. There are several factors that go into a person's satisfaction with a plane aside from the plane itself, and these need to be considered:

1) The experience, style and expectations of the person.

2) How the plane is set up, particullarly power system and weight. An airplane with a heavy motor and battery will be fast, but will it be aerobatic?

3) Trim. Has the person spent the time and energy to trim it properly? The charactor of a plane can change tremendously just with small changes in cg.

That being said, in the following table I tried to give enough information to determine how you might like that particular airplane based on your flying style.
I would consider myself an intermediate. I usually go home with little or no repairs. I like to fly aerobatics and am adding 3D moves. I do not like to just fly fast all over the sky. At least not usually. I am working on flying slower and closer in, though I do like Big Sky aerobatics and tumbling.
