I've been reading the Ballast-Theory discussion and thought of a way to easily add and remove ballast without taking off the wing. This was inspired by my friend's sportbike streamlined back-pack.
I picked up some modeling 'stuff' that I remember my kids using, which will air-dry and is lightweight and resilient (foam-like). Made a mock-up by sticking some supermagnets on top of the wing screws, then forming a long teardrop and mashing it half-flat over the wing center section. I will refine the shape and buy some tungsten weights to embed at the c.g. for the final version. I expect I'll need to glue the magnets and weights after the thing cures.

No-cost fixture to check c.g. - raid the kids' Lego box!
This one yields 54mm from leading edge, for my Hawk.
You can use cylinders or heads, and easily fine tune the fixture with tape or foam tape.
There is some foam tape on top of the rails to prevent slippage.

I have always loved flying formation with buddies at the field. But with limitations of depth perception from ground station, one can never gauge the exact relative position of the different planes resulting in planes being too far apart or mid-air collision. With head-tracking FPV, one can judge relative position as well as full scale guys. It's much easier than LOS to tighten up formation flying. Just takes a little practice and a smooth lead pilot to make it possible. I want to eventually fly warbird formation like the Horseman display team. For now just starting out with barrel rolls and other simple maneuvers. Not bad for only about a handful of flights training together. Enjoy!

This is a brief explanation on how to configure your talking DX 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9 transmitters. The photos are the same or very similar. You must have an AR636 receiver that comes with the 50 or so models that are the Bind and Fly type. You can buy a receiver from Horizon and have them program an “open stock” AR636 receiver for about $90 (as of Nov 2019). Most of the older types of wood or foam models can use the AR 636 receiver. The receiver must be solidly mounted and orientation is important and reversing the direction of the elevator, aileron, and rudder channels can’t be done at the transmitter. A $7 servo reverser, or a reverse servo are some ways to solve this situation. Removing the servo output arms and repositioning them 180 degrees so they push or pull the flight control surface is another way. The pushrod or tubing must not bind or interfere with anything and this may take time and effort. Purchasing a program cable and connecting it to the Bind port of the receiver is another way. You must use a Windows computer or tablet, and download programs and updates. Learning how to program the receiver can take some time. Terms like relative and absolute gains and flight modes must be understood. There are Spektrum videos and third party programs to help. Une bonne grosse frayeur ! Je partais en mode tranquillou pour approfondir un peu les tests sur le Emax HAWK PRO, mais cette session ne fût pas si reposante que ça ! Malgré mes petits déboires, je peux confirmer que cet engin n'a rien à envier aux autres appareils de sa catégorie. Mon RX est tombé en panne mais ça peut arriver et j'aurais dû remarquer que le RSSI n'était plus du tout constant même à faible distance. Je vous conseillerai par contre de changer la sangle pour une en kevlar et boucle en métal, pour un 6S c'est indispensable. En bref, le Hawk Pro reste un excellent racer 5" puissant, solide et bien réglé d'origine . Bon Film à Tous ...

With the long lay off of slope flying and other demands/priorities in my life I have found it hard to get back to the building board this past summer .

Summer is long past and winter is now upon us here in upstate N.Y. - and now the wind returns...
After getting out on the slope today i find myself eager to get back on unfinished projects and also start some new ones .
So ...
Here is the start of my DAW P-51 build {a quick build I hope}

1st step glue the basswood spars into the precut channel using white {foaming } Gorilla glue
Once dry glue the trailing edges on {I used 20 min epoxy}

This is the original DAW kit which used coraplast tails and full size servos {40 oz Futaba S-148}
I am still undecided weather to do the tail feathers out of balsa and cover for a better look or just go with the stock coroplast set up and finish it sooner
then go out and fly the snot out of it like most of the world has done up to now ...

next up - trim/sand the top or the spars and trailing edges and prepare to join the wing halfs

Well finally got a chance to get out on the slope here in NY for some sloping.
I had missed 2 other chances when the conditions were better with the NW wind coming straight up the hill but 36 years of marriage have taught me
"Never miss taking your Wife out for her birthday "
Anyway : I have not been out on the slope since Wilson last spring so trying a West wind thru the hedgerow and across the face of the hill was worth a try...I Really Need a Fix

The Ka-8 let me down with no working ailerons so it was time to give the Demon a shot ,a gift from a friend I had only put one flight on it over flat land .

Motor mounting plate of Ghost Rabbit GR1 (0 min 34 sec)


The first part of this video shows the CNC processing of an actuator disk for the diff lock of the Ghost Rabbit GR1. The part will be heat treated after the processing.

The second part of the video shows the motor mounting plate for the same car.
While most of its shape is processed on a CNC milling machine, the final steps of machining the bearing seats and some other surfaces which have all to be concentric are done on a CNC lathe.

A CNC milling machine is by design not capable of providing the same precision for these steps as a lathe. A lathe gives truly round and concentric results because the part itself rotates, not the tool.
A CNC milling machine makes a circle in many small steps, it interpolates the rounding. This is usually sufficient, but a lathe is clearly superior here.

Therefore we go the extra mile and use a lathe for these important steps of the processing. By doing so we achieve a precision for the bearing position of 0.005 mm."
