Just picked up this great 2.5M all purpose warmliner, the Energic, from SoaringUSA.

Putting in a 1509 1.5D with 18x21 on 4s. Should be about 3500-4000 watts.

Eric W. wanted me to post pics of how to build out a Sportstube for F5B transportation use.

Start with:

Additional items:
-- plastic corrugated cardboard, 4-6mm works well
-- hot glue for joining the cardboard pieces
-- packing tape for reinforcing the hot glue joints
-- thicker foam to protect the wing tips
-- thinner foam to cover all the cardboard on the wing side, hot glued in
-- misc hardware for wing mount

This setup can store 2 wings, packed on top of each other. To hold the wings in place, I use 2 screws that replicate how the wing would be mounted on a fuselage. It also stores 2 fuselages which are inserted nose-in into the corners of the cardboard insert.

Back in the game after a two year break. Flew down to San Diego for a practice a few weekends ago and flew a 49! Interesting to see how the sport has progressed over the last few years...

This weekend we had the team selection for the World contest for F5B in 2012. 5 competitors rallied hard - Lenny Keer, Steve Neu, Jeff Keesaman, Eric Wierman, and me.

I ended up coming 4th place and made the team as 1st alternate. Jeff came 3rd and edged me out by less than 2 legs for the whole event, across 8 rounds!

I wanted something a bit more portable than one of those big 12V warmer/cooler travel car units, so I decided to make one of these...

Test results so far - 2 6s lipos placed in the box at 65 degrees Fahrenheit got to 95 degrees in about 20 minutes. There is room for 2 lipos in the box to keep the rotation going during flights.

I figure the box can run for about 1.5-2 hours with the power supplied before the low voltage protector cuts in.

Source of the heating element/fans: (12v 20watts x 2 units with fans)

Just got back from San Diego.

Practiced with the US team (Steve N, Lenny, Jeff K, Eric) and managed a 48 leg run. Also 2 47's. Funny cross wind created some very interesting landings but overall very happy with a 48 result.

Rocked a personal best 46 score at the course in San Diego this weekend, and then followed that flight with a 47.5 leg run.

All the F5Bbox units have been reserved/sold. A bunch stayed in the US, but a few went to Australia, UK, Bulgaria, and Switzerland.

Setting up an uber power Trinity DS 3M plane...

Got a special handmade prop from Georgi Mirov in Bulgaria, molded perfectly to fit the Trinity fuse and also 40mm spinner... Thanks Georgi!

Had a failure in San Diego this weekend when I returned the switch jack to the switch jack, and the motor turned on for about 2 seconds full blast. Ripped up the prop and damaged the vertical stab on the tail.

I have had other models do this when I set the Futaba FASST receiver to high speed but then plugged the motor channel into the digital servo channels. But it has never happened before on this model so not sure why it happened on Sunday.

Otherwise I was flying 44 leggers pretty consistently (a few 43's) but the wind was blowing pretty well and the rest of the guys also flew 44's in most rounds (with 1 46 top score for the day by Steve Neu).

EDIT - I think the failure happened due to the extra capacitors (see blog post below). You just have to be extra careful on returning the switch jack...

So this is what happens when you have too much time on your hands... I had a custom F5B talking timer built to help with my F5B practice and competition. It's a verbal climb counting and leg set timing tool for use during an F5B flight, and then stores this data for immediate review after a flight.

For me, it solves 3 problems:

- Your helper forgets what climb count you are on
- Your helper doesn't exactly know when you should fly your 6 leg sets
- Its too difficult to use the Unilog to know during and right after a flight which sets were the best/worst, how fast the 4 or 6 leg set was exactly, and what the motor on time was (immediate feedback during practice)

How it works:

- F5Bbox connects to a spare receiver on the ground
- The connection is made via a switch that is plugged into the throttle signal
- Throttle signal is used to determine when and for how long the motor is on

Verbal climb counting:

- After each climb, the F5Bbox says the climb count verbally
- After 10 climbs it says Distance over
- A motor cut will not increment the climb count, but it does increment motor on time

Set timing: (optional on or off)

- After stating the climb count, it tells you the number of seconds ahead/behind you are against the cumulative standard 20 second set time.
- Being ahead of the cumulative 20 second set time means you can attempt a 6 leg set in the following climb.
- Sets are defined as the entire time for one “motor on” plus the time between the end of a “motor on” and the beginning of the next “motor on”.
- So it actually says "2 climb, 4 ahead".

Data recorded for every climb:

- Set time and motor on time
- Total remaining time and total motor time
- You can view up to 20 flights of data in the memory
- You can export via serial cable to the computer

Added the speed sensor for Unilog. Will be useful to see entry speeds on various props, as well as turning impact...

This is a carbon frame holding the sensor and is easily detached from the fuse.

2nd Avionik B08 model arrived...

Just in time - last weekend I flew down to San Diego with my first Avionik B08 and flew a 43.5 legger... moving up a few legs since the team trials. Now, to hit a 45 would be great!
