Mark V Navy Seal Special Operations Craft in 1:24
In my prior build logs the subjects were either already completed or being refurbished/refitted so chapters of the build would show up fairly fast. This one is from day one so my apologies up front-this might take a while.
The Mark V was the navy's go to craft for those stealthy deeds nobody has ever heard about. Its 80-83 feet (depending on which version is being built) and is 17 feet wide with a 24* deadrise at the stern and two KAMEWA water jets for propulsion. It will do 65+kts and draws 5feet of water. It usually sports two twin 50 cal guns and two MK19 granade launchers. For picking up groceries it carries 1-4 F470 inflatable RIBS with a 3cyl 55HP outboard. Many of these boats are now in museums and the private sector via auctions or scrap. The original version of the Mark V had problems injuring crew members and studies proved the crew were subject to 20G loads (yes I said 20Gs!) 60 MPH thru 10 and 15 ft seas caused transient forces that broke /sprained ankles wrists and fingers-prompting a small redesign of the crew area-The Coolest Friggin Boat I've Ever Seen...

ESSM Mark V Browne Pond (1 min 23 sec)

I acquired two 1/12 articulated figures a while back-they were two female space warriors from the future(I think)..I had them on the Pacemaker and called them the Blue Girls..My wife wasn't a fan so I did a little plastic surgery -ground off the holsters and vests, made bare feet out of their boots , added some suntan, added a little to their anatomy and reluctantly added a bikini. Not perfect (no body is)-but she'll do..

...now I'll see if my wife likes this version.

This is my scratch built 1984 90ft series Broward Yacht in 1/24th scale. It was built from borrowed full size blueprints-Its a fiberglass molded hull (from my scaled down drawings,plug and mold) with a plywood cabin. Its many features include:
1. Working radar antennas(accomplished thru the use of geared micro motor,VCR belts and a flex shaft).
2. Working Hot Tub-fills when activated and bubbles(will not overflow)and auto drains when the pump shuts off.
3. Lighted nav screens-Radar,sonar, MFD , and course plotter
4. RC sound system (from SD card or bluetooth)
5.Underwater "Yacht Lights"
6. LED nav ,entrance way, cabin windows (with mini blinds), aft galley, and bar lights
7. Scratch built 13ft Boston Whaler and scratch built 40 hp Johnson motor
8. Working search light-the light is controlled to sweep with the "aileron stick"only when the lights are selected on(accomplished with a micro 5v relay)
9. All placards and decals were scratch done as was the anchor, cleats, vertical windlass, Horns, liquor on the bar, deck chairs, bar stools, canister life rafts, rudders, shafts, struts, and cappuccino maker (got to have a cappuccino maker!)
10. Working bilge pump-a chamber with a calibrated "leak" fills and a water sensor (scratch designed and built) turns on the pump,pumps out port and starboard and latches on until another contact is cleared(preventing fast cycling)-giving the boat a lived in look when sitting static about once every...Continue Reading

This is a model of the brochure boat for Egg Harbor in 1972. I drew up plans from many photos and measurements of the full size boat in the marina. It has a redmax weed eater motor which I converted to water cooling (very hard to do because the spark plug is angled) and the output goes through a gearbox and on to two prop shafts(also homemade). The pilot station has a working compass (fabricated from a cut light bulb) The only items purchased were the props and the radio gear

Just for Ss&Gs I built this 5" steam engine from brass tubing, washers, and flat stock. I Do Not own a lathe! This was made from plans on the internet that were in French and metric. I translated it to English and converted to SAE (thanks to Google) then scaled it down to a size I wanted. It was machined using a drill press, a file(s), hacksaw, propane torch and my brazing skills. I don't know if I could do it again...I'm afraid to build the boiler so it just runs on compressed air.

Some might be interested in the Sayville boat burning at the maritime museum...its quite different! We've been doing this for about 40yrs and will be the friday before Holloween..check out the link. One year it was a 43ft owens aruba, another year it was a 50+ft huckens (not unlike the dumas dauntless. These boats are way beyond restoration and are donated to the museum for burning...the fire dept removes the fuel/tanks and glass and at darkness we all say goodbye to an old friend...

This was my family boat from 1964 to 1984ish.. My dad bought it new and added many options he couldn't afford from the MFG like the flying bridge and fresh water cooling. I spent many spring days on my back under this boat (it was a wooden boat)..back then you could work on your own boat...for 50 yrs I wanted to build an exact model of it..but no plans were available and there are no exact versions of the boat left, as far as the internet can tell me...I was on my own!...

A couple of notes:
The bottom paint was tough..the real boat had Interlux copper based paint. I don't think anyone uses it today. If they do its a couple a hundred dollars a gallon and very hazardous so I went to my local paint store and "bummed"some pigments used in Benjamin More latex paints then proceeded to custom mix the color I needed and mixed it into Polycrylic satin. Then I painted it on the bottom with a small brush to duplicate the bottom paint texture of the real boat.

Lets talk about the gold leaf on the transom. Everyone pretty much knows about water slide decal clear printer sheets. And thank heaven for cheap color laser prints at staples or office depot. But I don't know that if everyone knows that these sheets can be painted on...so I laid out the name aided by a photograph and photocopied it on white printer paper in B&W (larger than needed) Cleaned up the edges with a sharpie then shrunk it down to the exact...Continue Reading

This is what I spent my spare polyester resin on two years ago...was gas (freon134) operated with central ballast tank...converted it to water ballast fore and aft tanks last winter...what a difference...great control, water doesn't slosh anymore in tank when sub is not level (I even tried baffles of many designs) If you've noticed the water tight compartments might look familiar...Why reinvent the wheel! I realized that there were many watertight containers out there in the supermarket ready to be repurposed . They work great! just mount everything on a platform and attach it to the lid...to open, just hold the lid and turn the jar body..no need to disconnect any wires (they stay with the lid) to make any adjustments or changes. No fancy high tech plexy tubes and o-rings..keep it simple. I also realized that you dont need to put everything in a watertight compartment. I used a waterproof Turnigy Marine esc and it sits in the wet part of the hull as does the now brushless motor, steering and dive planes servos-hitec waterproof servos..frees up alot of valuable dry real estate ...especially in a hull thats only 3 inches wide !

To minimize wire connections I bussed together the ground and the power wires to the servos (all the reds together to one wire and all the blacks together to another wire)-this eliminated a bunch of thru wtc fittings and possible leaks.
