This photo was taken a few minutes before I took off...with reversed ailerons!!

After taking off and rolling to KE, I knew I was screwed but several of my buddies thought I was hotdogging... next thing I know, I am inverted and start giving down elevator to climb out. I knew what was wrong, and had to do opposite of intuition just to stay up, I was simply trying to tame it before attempting an approach.

Mark Murdock was at my side, and did a great job of managing to refuse the transmitter while also keeping me surprisingly calm. He was able to talk me down using rudder and elevator, and using opposite aileron controls to keep the wings level. I wanted to write it off, but we were able to bring it in suffering only a broken prop and a scratch on the cowl.

My knees were about to buckle, I could not believe how fortunate this was
Lesson: Always double check your controls- especially on a new tx, with a new plane! Also don't rush- even if there are folks waiting for your frequency.

I had been putting this off long enough, time to get back to tinkering on the P-47.

First I was delayed on funds, then when I finally got it all together I found I had some fuel-flow gremlins in my aircraft. Then I got sidetracked for SEFF, then for the Southeastern FPV Fly-In.

With my other projects mostly off the bench, I am going to get back to my warbird. First on my list is to install Robart giant electric retracts, then replace the fuel lines and system with this goodiebag from Hodges Hobbies and Jersey Modeler.

When plugging into my LED's during Tuesday night at SEFF, I had a series of shorts and burnt wires throughout the fuse. It was just before the first flight of the night... not sure if I will open her back up to do lights and recover. 501 LEDs and a lot of love went into this- Thanks for the countless fun nights!

A big thanks to Weathervane for picking up this Cub for me and driving it down safely to SEFF. The original builder, VacoBob, did a fantastic job on this plane, it is unrecognizable from the stock H9 J-3 Cub. The detail is outstanding, down to the fly fishing rod tucked away in the cabin. Other notables include iflytailies pilot, hat, headsets, magazines, map, Cub teddy bear, matte finish, and 8" GoodYear air tires. Went out to fly the Ford TriMotor a few weekends ago, our club set up a display of model aircraft on the tarmac and a friend snapped this one for me- she looks so real!

Picture was taken by either Matt Gunn or Joel Levine- not sure...

This 1/4 scale ARF has been recovered in fabric. Still undecided on scheme, but I am leaning towards a the Navy Piper AE-1 air ambulance; I am also open to suggestions for other schemes...


It has been very difficult to find yellow versions of a military J-3. I have found a few Super Cubs but yellow military J-3's are few and far between. If you have any pics of one, feel free to post it up in this thread!

This is my new H9 1/4 scale J-3 Cub purchased at SEFF 2012.

After seeing this plane at SEFF on an Orange Rx (with 400+pilots), I knew I had to buy this plane before it met its demise.... here is the history I know and what I have learned after a thorough going over.

What I know:

The original builder passed away before it was completed. He recovered the entire plane in fabric; a set of J-3 plans and 2 views (top and profile) was used as a guide for the rib detailing and stitch work. The stitching was a rather clever DIY method I will share in the H9 J-3 Review thread by Michael Heer later (https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=698597).

The original builder tediously recovered ever square inch of the interior in expert fashion and I was told did the majority of the rib-work. I am not sure if these seats were recovered, but they are different than the seats pictured in the review. Mine are white leather with black piping. Also all hardware is heavy-duty quality stuff and beefier hinges with metal pins were used

The gentleman who completed the plane is who I bought it from. I was told it has around 15 flights.

What I discovered and assume:

Well I picked up this ol Guillow F-15 forever ago on RC Groups. After being build the original builder was scared to fly it. It needed recovering and after removing the previous tissue, revealed it was not the most accomplished builder. Different size ducting and exhaust for each EDF unit, and a few bits of missing wood here and there were replaced, but not all of them. These were some of the "irks" I discovered but I got tired of this little guy sitting on the bench and went ahead and started to recover without fixing some of what I felt were non-crucial areas

In the future, when covering a model of this scale, I will not use a shrink film but a tissue and dope. I have only covered the bottom so far, but there where areas that when shrunk, removed some of the classic lines of the F-15. Like the little dip between the turbines, and in spots between the wing and fuse has more curves than it should.

This was a Build n Show model display kit No. 1401, converted to rc with twin 30mm EDF motor and fan units.

Bottom of fuse and wings have been covered, I also covered the the full flying stabs. (not pictured) More pics will be posted once she is buttoned up.

Overall, I am somewhat dissatisfied by the original builder's build, but do believe it will fly and hopefully fly somewhat well. I do not typically video maidens, but as there have not been many of this particular model flying (none that I know of at least; if this model has been converted before please do send me some information) I will try to get it on film.

After over a year on the bench since I LVC'd into the trees, the Addiction X is back in the air and had its re-maiden tonight.

At about 2x the recommended weight, she still flies well. Poor night for a maiden, cold and windy; but I hope to get more pics and night footage soon.

The CG was still way off and tail heavy despite having added nearly 40g of nose weight Anyway, we will get that sorted out with a few more flights.
