Went back home this weekend for the yearly 'Wings Over Ashville' airshow. Turned out really well this year.

A few details on the event:

There is an acrobatic pilot, Greg Koontz, who owns/operates a grass airstrip out on the outskirts of Ashville, AL where he lives and operates a stunt flying school for those who are interested in coming out and learning how to fly aerobatics or for those who wish to improve their techniques. At the end of his grass strip and to the south is an R/C field where the Slasham Valley Irregulars fly. The R/C club and Greg put this together every year for at least the last 5-6 as something to do for the community. The show has always been free admission, but with a $5 parking fee (which included one raffle ticket) that goes toward the local Civil Air Patrol group. The CAP, and sometimes Boy Scouts, are in attendance and help with parking and general operation of the event. They usually sell some sort of raffle ticket as well for prizes donated by event sponsors, with the proceeds going toward CAP.

Greg's side of things (the pilots side) it usually run a little bit differently. Not only does he himself fly two different routines (usually, one in a Piper Cub and the other in a Super Decathalon), but he has a get together for his pilot friends and they fly in from all over the country to have a cookout and share laughs and stories, and many are nice enough to fly in the airshow with Greg at noon!
