Just realized I never posted what happened to my StevensAero Park Cap. Took it and the TREX 450 to the anniversary event at the AMA Headquarters in Muncie in June 2011 -- seen here on the main flight line:
KE Pass
Leaving the flight line:
Not two weeks after that event, I was flying back home with a friend in the morning (I always fly in the afternoon) and the sun was in an unusual spot for me at this particular location. I went to do a transition from canopy in to canopy out KE and lost the CAP in the sun for a split second. I was sun blinded and the next thing I see - it's heading for the ground. Still blinded, it looked like it was canopy up so I pulled full elevator and gave full throttle... unfortunately it was canopy down. Augered it from about 20 feet.
Here was the remains:

So it's been a year since I posted to my blog and I'm trying to keep this update for me more than anything. My last post mentioned the SkyBoy which ironically I just completed and maidened this weekend. It took a backseat to the TREX 450 and 3DHS 48" Edge for quite a while but I was looking for a lazy flyer that I could take with me to supplement the on edge (no pun intended) 3D flights. Second flight on it's maiden day and I had no ground control on landing and swerved into a curb, destroying the firewall. I'm sure it's repairable --- but I gotta be honest, I'm not looking forward to it after just getting it airworthy.
Also picked up a 38" EPP Slick from 3DHS over the fall/winter months to practice here in the neighborhood. I have since outfitted it with LEDs for night flying as well. Here are some pics of it at night:
But I've been spending as much time as I can (which isn't much with my work and family schedule) with the 3DHS 48" Edge 540. I love this plane! It literally does everything that I could want a plane to do. I can circle fly with it if I want but I can also hover it, do high speed KE passes, KE spins, blenders, etc. What a blast to fly and it looks amazing to boot. To spice it up a little I cut some custom vinyl for it. Here's how she looks now:

Committing to my reentry into the hobby, not only have I flown every day that I possibly could since I maidened my CAP, but I also finally broke down and purchased the Phoenix Simulator. I REALLY want to learn how to do precise aerobatics and my ultimate goal is to purchased a helicopter and become proficient enough at flying it to attached a camera and shoot some HD footage for our company. Having the ability to do aerial shots would be HUGE for what we do. I know it's a long way down the road, but you gotta have goals --- and Phoenix I feel will definitely help get me closer to that goal. Can't wait for it to arrive.
Oh - and my StevensAero Skyboy shipped today! SAH-WEET!

This weekend I was so excited to take out the SA CAP for a few more flights. A new bunch of props arrived and also three more 3s 2200mah batteries from David @ Progressive RC. I was ready to go!
Unfortunately the weather thought differently and decided to gust up to 50 mph all weekend.
So today at lunch when I saw the wind was blowing less than 5mph, I ran home and had a quick flight during my lunch hour. Also decided to try to squeeze another flight in before sundown after work. I rushed home and got the plane ready and headed outside. I do live in a neighborhood but the houses are fairly far apart and we have 3 dead-ends on my street so there's no a lot of traffic and the yards are fairly large (plenty of room for landing without being near cars, people or the houses). I would guess there's a solid 50-60 yards from front of house to front of house. I know it's not the best idea, but my neighbors are cool with it and I only do it when I can't make it to the school to play on the field.
I go outside and check the control surfaces and my neighbor across the street pulls up just as I taxi out of the driveway. He greets me and I him just as I throttle up and take off. He hadn't seen me fly before so I was gonna give him a show. Full throttle climb out - straight vertical - nearly out of sight. About 150 feet up, my gear let go. He looks over and says,"Hope you didn't need that." "If that was the pilot, you're in trouble." LOL!

After six long years of waiting, I FINALLY maidened my StevensAero CAP232 S300 today. And while I only got one flight in, it made me remember what I love about this hobby and why I am really looking forward to getting back into it.
So, why six years in the making? I bought the SA CAP232 kit when my wife and I were in our first apartment. I had nothing but time on my hands but I didn't have any money to speak of. So I bought the kit and the supplies to complete it but when I got to the radio gear, batteries and charger I just couldn't find the money. So the SA CAP232 became a permanent fixture hanging from the ceiling in our den.
Fast forward six years --- new house, 2 children and multiple promotions in my career and now I have the money to complete it but could never find the time. Last month I worked 64 hours of overtime (and I'm salary so no, it didn't equate into more money) but it made me realize that I've got to stop working all the time and play some. My life is/was completely revolving around work instead of revolving around my wife, children, God and me. So getting back into one of my favorite hobbies is my first step toward freedom outside the workplace. And this morning I maidened the "New Me" too.
To the flight! I took some pics before taking off in case I never saw it this way again. Check out this beauty:
(in this one you can see that the Solite film stretched over the past 6 years and even a warm iron wouldn't shrink it up)
