The Westland Lysander

The Lysander, or "Lizzie", was a British co-operation airplane. It saw service before and during WWII.

Designers at Westland Aircraft spent a considerable amount of time interviewing RAF pilots to find out what they would like to have in an airplane. The result of all those interviews was the Lysander. Pilots wanted to have a field of view, good low speed handling and STOL performance.

Although the plane looks archaic, it was actually quite advanced for its time. The wing has an unusual taper that makes it look like a gull wing, but its actually straight!

Here are some more specs on the Lizzie:

  • Wing area: 260 ft² (24.2 m²)
  • Empty Weight: 4,365 lb (1,984 kg)

  • Range: 600 miles (522 nmi, 966 km)
  • Service Ceiling: 21,500 ft (6,550 m)
  • Climb to 10,000 ft (3,050 m): 8 min
  • Take-off run to 50 ft (15 m): 305 yards (279 m)

Check this out.

It's a Snow White built by Rich Minnick. The airplane was designed by Joe Raspante in 1938. What a gorgeous model. I am definitely going to build one of these beauties, but it is going to have to wait till I get a few more builds under my belt. This is one that will need to come out near perfect in order to do it justice.
