This is the first video in a series to help new pilots enter into the radio control (RC) hobby. A beginner's RC helicopter was used in this tutorial, as the method of control is the same for both drones and helicopters. The helicopter's advantage over a drone for beginners is that it is a much more efficient flier, and allows longer practice flight time per battery charge. The tutorial helicopter that was used can achieve up to 15 minutes of flight time, and may be found here .

This series will focus on basic piloting skills for flying drones and helicopters. We'll start with a discussion of transmitter flight controls, and how they are applied to fly the aircraft in hover. In follow-on videos we'll examine yaw, horizontal translational flight, turning, and orientation tips.

These important flight training tips will help prevent you from losing your quadcopter. It's very important to learn how not to lose orientation of your quadcopter. This can be done by observings its movement alone. What would you do if one day you flew further away than you could be able to visually distinguish your quadcopters front or back? Also this might come in handy for advanced quadcopters, such as DJI. If one of those notorious fly aways is experienced, simply switch to manual control and follow these procedures to help bring it back.

A simple way to bring it back close to you is to first push forward on the pitch control to gain forward movement. Then notice which direction the quadcopter is moving in the distance. If its moving left, turn left to turn the quadcopter in your direction. If its moving right in the distance, turn right to point it toward you. If it alternates between right and left, just keep matching the direction that you turn with its movement. Remember, if its moving right, turn right. If its moving left, turn left.

Vortex Ring State (aka Settling with Power or the Wobble of Death) is a flight condition common to all rotor aircraft (helicopters and multirotors/quadcopters/drones). For those new to the hobby, they may inaccurately attribute this condition to a fault of their aircraft. But really, it is just a flight phenomenon similar to airplane wing stall.
