Eugene Bullard, Black American Expatriate and French War Hero
University of Georgia professor John Morrow, Jr. recounted the life story of Eugene Bullard. Bullard grew up in Georgia but, dissatisfied with the prospects for Black Americans in the Jim Crow South, stowed away on a freighter for Europe and eventually settled in Paris. Bullard, a boxer, musician, and nightclub owner served France as an infantry machine gunner, fighter pilot, and spy in World Wars I and II. He earned 14 French war decorations including the nation’s highest, Knight of the Legion of Honor. This event was hosted by the National World War II Museum, and they provided the video
