We are back from our Midwest Slope adventure 2867 miles later.
We left Wilson at 6:00am Sunday after topping off on coffee at the K-18 Cafe ( they let us in before they open to help us get on the road early ) and arriving back home on my door step at 5:00 am Monday .

It is only 2 days before Pat and I make our first trip to Wilson Kansas to fly in the Midwest slope Challenge.

After putting the Knife Edge aside for a bit,
I picked her back up and after a bit of Foam Tack ,White Gorilla glue and a little strapping tape.
She is ready to rumble

Monday 4/15 dawns with the promise of 20 mph straight up the hill with light rain clearing off by 4:00
As I drove out there were still some sprinkles on the wind shield so I took my time and waited at the bottom of the hill till they were gone.
Once at the top the wind was 22 mph with gusts up to 30
I had brought out my combat wings {a 26 oz Knife Edge and a lighter wide body KE} perfect conditions to do a check out flight before the upcoming Glider Games in Cleveland in 2 weeks and a week later out to Wilson Kansas for "Wings over Wilson".

I launched with no problem and was trimming out the down elevator that I had put in when i was last out with it in 40 mph wind .
About 2 minute into the flight my hat blew off my head and I started backing up the hill to try and get to it before it went over the top,
I turned to take one more big step to get it and the next thing I know i am on my face ... yup dirt nap both me and the plane
I got back on my feet and hobbled my way down to the base of the hill{mild sprain of my ankle} where it went in,as i got closer i could see it was hurt pretty bad-
I climbed back up to the top and switched to the lighter wide body Knife Edge,with great flying conditions I was not going to quit.
Flew for about 5 min,the wind had built up some more with higher gusts at times ,the wide body was doing ok even though it doesn't penetrate as well as my 26 oz that i just ripped in half .

I got stalled by a really big gust and landed about 1/4 way down the hill but before i could get to it another gust picked it up and got it flipping end over end to the top of the hill where it took a even bigger hop and wound 20 feet up in the top of a tree.
by the time I got it out of the tree it also was beat up and minus both tiplets.

Hows that song go "Daddy said there'd be days like this ... "

I got out for a couple of hours of flying after work today.
I was not sure if the wind direction would be flyable as they were calling for a west wind which blows through a tree line and is crossed ..but 25 to 30 mph was calling me
I brought out a Bob Martin Coyote 54 oz
and a 2 M T-Tail that I think is a Gerry 53 oz
I put the Coyote up first and flew for around 40 min, I had not put my gloves on because I was not sure if I could launch it with my left had with a glove on... besides the temps were in the mid 40's,I flew a lot colder that this this past winter
The launch was no problem but by the time I landed my fingers were hurting pretty good {must be getting old}

It took at least 10 minuets of swinging my arms to get my hands warm again and it was time for "Gerry", by this time the wind had picked up to over 30's with gusts around 40 mph trying to rip the plane out of my hands.
I had to sit down on the slope face in front of the plane for at least 5 minute before I got a lull to launch in..it was worth it
The lift was brutal but a blast with some huge pumps and at other times the wind just stopping it as the direction changed to south and then back to west - {North Easter weather at its best}

Order has been restored to the universe {at least in my hanger}

The day started with a inch or two of snow and temps around 25 but with bright sunshine and wind still 20 mph gusting to 30 .
I waited for the sun to raise the temps and melt the snow,they predicted 30's by early afternoon.

So out I went with my trusty glider retrieval system { old collapsible pool net handle ,a section from my roof snow rake ,a old coat hanger and of course duct tape }...".Remember guy's if you cannot be handsome you might as well be handy".....
might as well bring the Swift back out as well since I am going to walk back up the hill anyway.

I wondered if the wind might have blown it down but there she was where I "left her" still in the top of the tree on the back side no worse from the wear of a stormy night in the elements .
I taped the sections of handle together and the coat hanger as a hook at the top ,maneuvered it thru the brush and tree limbs and with a little shake and tug on the limbs down she came ,right into my hands .
I was tempted to try to fly her again but decided not to push my luck {when i got home I plunged the battery back in and everything is working fine }
Once back up on top of the hill {after a bit of a rest } I flew the Swift for around a hour,packed up and headed back down the hill and home.
A Good day !

BTW - I remembered that last year the wind following a Noreaster behaved the same way,
first day great wind but also snow/rain or mix
Next day great wind Sunshine and dry -

A classic NorEaster romping up the east coast today and tomorrow.
Wrap around winds coming off Lake Ontario from the North West with rain changing to snow ,temps dropping from the 40's to mid 20's.......
Yup It's time to Slope

I cruised around with my Windrider Swift for around 45 minutes until my gloves wet through and my hands got cold,I thought "gee I would rather fly in snow than rain......
Was going to pack up and go home when the snow started {and + 22 mph winds }
Cant go home with out flying in the snow one more time...it might be the last snow till next winter....probably not

Out we go with the Heavy Dan Wing ,ripped it up and down across the face of the hill as the squalls came through ,what a blast, didnt even feel cold wet hands and all .
I should have put my goggles, I let it get to far out around the lip of the hill and it got blown over to the back side ..
Oh well - soft landing in a tree .
I will retrieve it tomorrow ,my gloves should be dry by then

The wind was forecast in the mid 20's the temps were above freezing and the direction was crossed on the slope but i figured I would give it a shot with my ODR's.

The yellow ODR bird is from G.E.M.S and is my heavy at 33 oz .

The white is a Leading Edge One design Racer in at 26 oz .

With the wind blowing thru a head row and across the slope at 22 mph gusting around 28 I put the yellow ODR up first.
The heavier weight allowed it to penetrate the gusts but it was a struggle to keep her in the air when the wind ebbed ,the wind shadow behind the hedgerow was a killer ,just not enough lift , I had a 8 min flight and a 10 min flight both resulting in the "walk of shame" to retrieve

Time for the LEG - I launched straight into the wind across the face of the hill and easily climbed above the tree line ,I spent the next 45 minutes finding the "sweet spot" above the trees , I could park it and gentily zig zag back and forth across the top of the hill or push down and rip it up out in front of the face then elevator it back up above the trees . A Great flight !
I put the yellow back out to verify the lift had not gotten better on the LEG flight,nope short flight - just not enough lift for the extra weight.
A good outing for sure

I finally got back out for some slope flying today after a month layoff.
Due to lack of proper wind this past February was a complete bust ,last year when ever a North Easter would blow through the next 2 to 3 days would produce great wind 20 to 30mph straight up our hill,This year the wind after the storms has all been crossed -just when I thought I had the pattern figured out -
Anyway the forecast was for good direction 14mph coasting down to 12 mph by late afternoon so I left work a 1/2 hour early to be at the top of when the max mph was predicted to blow.

as on cue 3:00 found 15 mph steady gusting to 20mph...and Sunshine a pleasant surprise -

I had brought out a G.E.M.S Knife Edge - wide body, Of course A SIZZLE {all ways in my quiver} and My trusty Park Zone KA-8

The wide body flew well but as it was intended for lower wind conditions it did not penetrate and hold its inertia as well as my stock Knife Edge when the gusts ramped up,I had brought it expecting the wind to subside to 12 mph ....note to self - maybe a white wing is not the best color for snowy winter flying

The Sizzle was next - I spent a hour tearing up the slope with her,a kick in the pants as usual ADHD in all the right ways .

Then I finished the afternoon with a 1/2 hour on the KA-8, like dancing with a fat lady -
My fingers were starting to hurt so I brought her down and packed up,I hated to call it quits with daylight and sunshine,and wind remaining but probably the right call.
I Will sleep well tonight !

Amazing yet another day of flyable wind on our hill,where was all this wind last summer

Out with my slope pal Pat.
Mid 30's temps,15 mph wind and just enough snow flakes to remind you it is winter.
As we walked up the hill my other slope buddies were all ready flying - a pair of 5' red tail hawks that keep me company .{ sorry no pictures they have been camera shy so far }
We put everything up and even got a first slope flight on new Pat's 2m Fox picked up at this year's NEAT Fair.
A Great way to end the first week of the New Year

Started the new year off right -
a 19 mph blowing up the face of our hill,temps in the high 30's and all the snow taken away by the last day's rain
9:00 am and Time to get my slope on :]

spent the next 3 hrs on the hill with my buddy Lynn and a G.E.M.S - ODR , Knife Edge , and Sizzle wings

I was able to get back out on our hill today for 3 hours of sloping in reasonable 37 degree temperatures and 20 mph wind .

I brought out my GEMS ODR ,last time out {maiden} I had a range problem with the Lemon receiver so I changed it out with another.
Today"s flights went well, I played around with the CG and finished up back at the recommended 2"from the LE .

Next up was the maiden of a 60"mini Blade carbon I just picked up used off of RCG, weighing in at 43 oz auw I had no idea what to expect from it in our changeable bumpy air and I had not flown a 60" that heavy before on our hill.
She launched out like she was on rails , bridged the lumpy air and gusts, did pumps, paper clip turns and a couple of fast passes close to the top of the hill making that sound...Wow now I see why guy's spend what they do to buy these molded ships.
Unfortunately I had a couple of servo issues as the flight progressed, The right aileron servo stopped centering and was hunting up and down around a 1/16 each way{I confirmed this once I had landed}.
At first I thought it was just the wind gusts,but as i flew passes back and forth it didn't matter the direction it always dropped the right side ...not a big deal I just stayed on the aileron stick... like you do when its gusting.
I probably should have landed at that point but I was having to much fun flying it and finding out what it could do .

I see the site still is having problems ,
Just don't have the patience/ time to keep re inputting my log on/password to try and post or search or whatever
Like others I will take a step back from RCG and spend my time building while waiting for the wind to turn to the NW and start to rip .
I hope RCG gets things sorted out soon.

The summer has past with no good flyable winds that I could get out in since the beginning of June when we had a plus 25 mph afternoon .

I just got out the Wednesday before Thanksgiving in what turned out to be a epic Day that started with consistent 20 mph ,gusting to 30 but built to consistent 40 gusting over 50
Measure with a Hall Wind Meter as recommended by Slopemaster.
When the wind increased above 30,and the gusts were rocking us back on our heels my friend said "I would like to know how hard the wind is blowing now "
I told him the wind meter is in my bag , pull it out He did and that is when we were reading 40 and above .
Its really seductive flying the heavier stuff in big air

I made it out today after work to try some light wind slermaling on our hill.
The forecast was for a max of 10 mph north dropping off to under 9 after 4:30.
I used my 2M Great Planes Spirit to check out the possibilities ,as I have not tried to fly in north wind at this marginal wind speed .
The first hour was good flying alternating between ranging out and thermaling with the active air and running back to the hill and sloping the face .
On Que the wind speed dropped ,I started to notice the bugs coming out of hiding then the wind shifted across the hill to from the north east all the lift vanished.
Time to pick up and go.
A great way to end the work day -
