Sand the balsa block so that it fits flat. Cut the block to almost fit the edges of the pilot figure base. The balsa cuts very easily. -

When sanding up to the edge, I wrapped the balsa base in masking tape. No matter how hard I sanded, it never broke through the tape. -

This step probably was not needed, but to save weight, I used a rotary tool to hollow out the base. I would recommend wearing a mask for the dust. -

Valspar makes a good primer spray. Coating the raw balsa made the job in final painting a breeze. -

I used a mixture of yellow and tan enamel to paint the straps. Then when it was almost dry, I mixed black paint with mineral spirits. This made a good wash that aged the straps. Flat black was painted over the new base. -

I worked hard to match the previous brown color. Then I used a dry short bristled brush to dapple the brown over the black. -

My pilot is now in proportion with the pilot the plans called for. I think it will be better than sitting on a block of painted wood. -

After the paint dried, I sprayed Testor Dullcote over the shoulders and base of the pilot. I also bent paper clips and made strap clips right at the seam of the straps to hide where the met. I glued them in place with CA.
