I ordered this kit from Gear Best on 26 February. It wasn't high on my priority list to start the build but some one broke into my garage (19 May 2016) and stole all my helicopters and quads. I had nothing left to fly.

I received some parts in for this kit so I decided to start building it today.

Parts (BOM):
RoboCat 270 frame kit $24.94

Power Supply Board 5V 12V BEC with Power Filter $7.95

EMAX Cooling New MT2204 II 2300KV Brushless Motor $65.89

Emax Simonk Series 20A ESC X4 $9.69 each total $38.76

OpenPilot CC3D Atom Mini $14.99

Lemon Rx DSMX Compatible 6-Channel Receiver with Diversity Antenna $12.95

Total: 165.48

This total will no doubt climb if I decided to install FPV equipment but probably not by too much.

I ordered this helicopter from Banggood on December 22nd, 2015. I didn't realize at the time that this helicopter has been around since 2008. I take that as a testament to its popularity that it is still being sold 7 years later.

I have already started acquiring the parts I'll need to complete this build. The components that I intend to use are:

CopterX CX450BA DFC Black Angel $94.75
Cyclic Servos: EMax DS09MD $8.99 each
Tail Servo: KST DS215MG $25.99
Flight Controller: KBAR V2 3 Axis Gyro Flybarless System $29.99
Receiver: Lemon 6ch Antenna Diversity Satellite $10.80
Motor: NMT 3400kV / 500W $18.10
ESC: YEP 60A / SBEC 5A $29.14
Battery: Turnigy 2200mAh 3S 30C Lipo Pack $20.98

Total Build Cost: $257 (anticipated)

Today I began the assembly of the ZMR 250 Kit that I purchased from Banggood on April 6th 2015 and received on April 27th 2015.

H250 ZMR250 250mm Carbon Fiber Kit

DYS BE1806 2300KV Brushless Motor Black Edition

Emax Simonk Series 12A ESC

OpenPilot CC3D Flight Controller Bent Pin STM32 32-bit Flexiport

I was in no hurry to get started as I had several components on order that had yet to arrive. Most of the components have arrived so I decided to go ahead and get started.

I started by putting the prop mounts on the motors.

Propeller Mount (Φ5mm / CW / H1806)
Propeller Mount (Φ5mm / CCW / H1806 / Silver Bullet)

Next I put the motors on the arms.

I looked at the ESCs that I purchased but I want to put them inside the body of the quad if possible, so I set them back aside for now.

Next I mounted the standoffs using thread lock.

I chose the front by marking the top of the posts with a permanent marker.

Next I mounted the arms on the frame.

It compares very closely to the Tarot 250 that I bought and built earlier, build log here.

I've never built a quad from scratch. I have three quads, a Hubsan X4, a WL Toys, V959 and V262. I have a Mobius and home build anti-vibration mount. I have on the other hand built two 450 sized helicopters so I hope that experience has helped prepare me for this endeavor.

So here is what I used to build this quad.

TAROT Mini 250 Carbon Metal Quad copter main frame Kit Built-in PCB board TL250A. $32.99

To power it, I bought Emax Mt1806 2280kv Brushless Motor (Pack of 4 CW/CCW match set ). $54.98

I bought these Hobbypower Simonk 12A Brushless Speed Controller ESC (pack of 4 pcs) $35.98

Gemfan 5x3 5030 3-Leaf Propeller Black and Orange get the job of providing lift. $14.36 (3 sets each)

OpenPilot CC3D Flight Controller Bent Pin STM32 32-bit Flexiport gets the job of keeping this thing stable. Goodness knows the pilot isn't capable. $14.99

SMD 5050 Blue Waterproof LED Flexible Flash Strip add a bit of flash and good for night flying visibility. $12.98 this is the total for 16.4 ft. of this adhesive backed waterproof LED strip of which I used 6" of each color. A pro rated amount for what I used is about $0.40

SMD 5050 Red Waterproof LED Flexible Flash Strip add a bit of flash and good for night flying visibility. A pro rated amount for what I used is about $0.40

Lemon Rx DSMX Compatible 6-Channel Receiver + Lemon DSMX Compatible Satellite provides the channel outputs to the flight controller. $14.99

The grand total not including such extras as needed to...Continue Reading

Tarot 450 PRO V2 FBL Flybarless RC Helicopter KIT
Banggood (Link to product)
SKU: SKU104672
Purchased: 03/02/2015
Received: 03/24/2015

Hobbyking YEP 40A (2~6S) SBEC Brushless Speed Controller

NTM Rotor Drive 450 Series 3400KV / 500W from Hobby King

EMAX ES09MD Digital Swash Servo, yes I'm using these for swash servos.

KST DS215MG Metal Miniature Digital Servo, I'm using this light, strong and fast servo for my tail servo.

VBar 5.3.4pro Big KBAR K8 Flybarless 3 Axis Gyro System. I used the Mini K-Bar on my Forza 450 build but decided to go with the Gold K-Bar for this build so I could enable the governor if I desired.

Turnigy 2200mAh 3S 30C Lipo Pack

It was sent via registered mail so required a trip to post office to prove I'm me and then they let me have my package.

I'll add more pictures as I go along and detail the steps as I accomplish them.

Edit: I have purchased two JR Forza 450 3D full kits with the mini TAGS. Today (4/29/2017) I started to build one of these helicopters. The helicopter I built and talk about in this build log was stolen out of my garage and I no longer have it. The build for this new helicopter starts on page 5 for those who are interested.

On 01/14/2015 I purchased the JR Forza 450 3D Kit w/Motor. It left quit a bit for me to buy and set up but I wanted to build a 450 sized helicopter from a kit and this fit the bill.

Here is the list of build components

JR Forza 450 3D Kit w/Motor $149.99
KST DS215MG Metal Miniature Digital Servo X 4 $106.96
YEP 40A (2~6S) SBEC Brushless Speed Controller 5A BEC $20.95
YEP ESC Programming $13.63
Lemon Rx DSMX Satellite LM0008 X 2 $17.60
VBar 5.3.4pro Big KBAR K8 Flybarless 3 Axis Gyro System $37.99

So I'm going to document the build as I go along. I started today 2/28/2015 about 6 weeks after purchasing the kit. The delay was mostly due to the slow delivery of the KST servos that I ordered from Banggood. I got a pretty good price but between the port shut down at San Pedro and the Chinese new year, it took well over a month to receive the servos.

I didn't get a picture of the parts out of the box. Sorry about that. I'll try to do better on my next build tread.

I have looked and looked but cannot find a set of ball link pliers that I can use on my micro helicopters. The problem came to a head when I was trying to pry the servo link off of the swash plate on my HiSky HFP100 and I snapped off a ball. Man those balls are little (2mm). I donít think it was a problem with the swash, I donít blame it for breaking, it took an incredible amount of force to get these ball links to pop off. I believe the links are bad way too tight on the ball. That would help to explain my poor experience with flying this particular heli too.

So I took matters into my own hands and had an idea. I have a pair of tweezers that had an alignment pin. I was thinking that with a little modification I could turn them into a tool that will work. Knowing better than to risk my wifeís ire I searched for a pair I could buy online that wasnít too expensive. I found a pair at Amazon that would work just fine the Aven 18403 for $5.04.

The rest is told in the pictures....Continue Reading

Thought that I would track my thoughts as I progress in my journey. Started flying RC helicopters in December 2013.

My first helicopter was the MJX T-23, I donít remember the purchase date. I flew this helicopter around my back yard until I destroyed the flight blades and smoked one of the two motors. Ordered new blades and a new motor; after installing the new parts the bird still didnít fly very well. Essentially as soon as I received the V911 I was done flying this helicopter.

Here's a list of the gear that I own.
