With spring right around the corner I figured it was time to put together a new backyard bird. 1S Whoops are my favorite for my small half acre backyard, and my old Beta75 has quite a few miles on it so I decided to start this spring with a fresh build.

I was hoping to put together a couple new Whoops with my current budget, so the hunt for some inexpensive parts began. I came across this frame on Amazon that included a set of props for only $5.99 so in the cart it went. RCG member KadosMicroMotors recently had a big sale on some Whoop parts, so I was able to get some new BetaFPV 0703 15000kv motors from him for quite cheap in the RCG classifieds. Control is handled by a BetaFPV F4 1-2s AIO and camera/vTX is an AKK A5 on this 3D printed mount from Thingiverse. I power all of my Whoops with GNB batteries, and this one like my other 75mm is running on these 450mah 1S batts.

Everything went together butter smooth, and last nights indoor maiden was a success! Now I just need to beat the incoming snow storm and get it outside for a real flight, and some DVR footage.

Oh yeah! This one should be lots of fun! The L6082 Air Genius 3 in 1 Tiny Whoop Drone, Whoover, Glider is a complete ready to run package that gives you the option of flying a quadcopter, driving a mini hovercraft, or piloting a micro airplane.

The package includes everything you need to get flying, or hovering except 4 AA batteries for the transmitter. They even include 2 flight batteries to keep the fun going longer, with less down time.

One very nice surprise for me was to see that they also include 4 wings. As someone that already owns a bunch of Whoops, and Drones my biggest interest in this model was the idea of having a plane that I could fly around in the house. Extra wings gives me the confidence to push the limits a bit without worry of being grounded due to a hard crash.

Check out the pics, and first glider mode flight video. More info and videos coming soon.

These currently on sale on Amazon here for only $19.99 with free 2 day shipping for Prime members.

If you're like me and you're flying FPV with some older Fat Shark goggles, and would like a quick, easy, affordable way to add a DVR to record your flights with, then check out the Makerfire Mini DVR. This little DVR has a built in battery, so there is no need to connect it to an external power source. This makes it perfect for attaching to FPV goggles that don't already have a DVR.

The problem I have seen some people have with these DVRs is that they aren't out of the box compatible with Fat Shark goggles, or other brands of goggles that use a standard A/V 3.5mm plug configuration. Why they manufactured it like this is beyond me, however, it is a very easy fix.

In the images below you will see that the signal order of the cable included with the DVR has the ground, and video lines reversed when compared to the plug configuration needed for our Fat Shark goggles.

The fix is to simply cut the included cable in half (or shorter like I did). Since you will be splicing the cable back together anyway now is a good time to adjust the length to fit your needs.

Now that you have the ends of your cable open you will need to strip the 4 individual wires inside enough to allow you to solder (or crimp if you prefer) them back together. This time however you will reverse the red, and black wires, and connect them red to black, and black to red. This will put the ground, and video signal wires in the correct order on the plug for proper communication when plugged into your...Continue Reading

The idea for this build was to create something that resembled the ever popular Stormtroopers, and be a build that would be great for flying through my tight basement Whoop course. Since I already have a couple brushless, and 716 powered Whoops, I figured for this one I'd go a slightly different route and do a 615 build.

This is the end result, and I like to call it the Stormwhooper With the 17500kv motors, and the NBD Venom bi-blade props it's just about the perfect speed for the size of my course.

My camera arrived DOA so I'm waiting on the replacement to get here from Amazon. I'll update with a couple pics once it is here and installed.

The Stormtrooper (if you can call it that) helmet canopy is just some bits of 3M vinyl I cut and stuck on there

The Kwad is built on the RakonHeli 64mm Frame. Control is handled by a BetaFPV Silverware FC. Power comes from CrazePony 615 17,500kv motors, and NewBeeDrone Venom bi-blade props. The canopy is just a basic BetaFPV canopy, and it will be housing a TurboWing Cyclops 25mw AIO Cam/VTX. I mount the camera and VTX in my Whoop builds using these 3D printed mounts.

Here are some pics. I will get some flight video and DVR footage as soon as I can. Happy Flying!!...Continue Reading

I recently slapped together a 716 powered 65mm brushed Whoop running Silverware firmware for buzzing around my house/basement Whoop course this winter. Figured I'd share the build for anyone looking to do something similar. Santa filled my stocking with all sorts of Whoop related goodies this Christmas, so I'll have a couple more Whoop builds coming soon. They will all be running Silverware, but will have different frames, motors, and props, in order to keep their flying characteristics a bit different from one another.

The little Kwad is built on a BetaFPV Evil Sleek Frame, and Canopy combo. It is running a BetaFPV Silverware Flight Controller, Tiny Whoop Bald Eagle Sauce 19,100kv 7x16mm motors, and Gemfan 31mm props. For camera/VTX duties it is running the BetaFPV Z02 AIO camera and M01 25mw VTX with OSD.

Don't hesitate to ask any questions you might have. Here are some pics.

Edit-1/2/2020 Here is some DVR footage of a quick maiden flight. I still need to make a few settings changes in the DVR. I just got this Makerfire Mini DVR modified to work with my Fat Shark Predator V2 goggles.

I was looking for an RC boat with a scale appearance that was both inexpensive, relatively slow, and easy to drive for the youngens when they come over to visit. The Flytec V001 RTR caught my eye, and so far it seems like it's just about perfect for what I wanted it for. It looks fantastic, and should look very realistic when running once I find a suitable driver figure. It could stand to be a little bit faster, but it'll probably be just right for inexperienced visitors, and my grandson as soon as he's old enough to start playing with RC models.

The boat does not have a servo for steering, instead it uses differential thrust to make left and right turns. When you steer one motor slows down, and the other motor speeds up to move the boat in your chosen direction. Because of this there is some speed lost when making turns, but it makes it very easy for kids to control the boat. All in all I'm pretty impressed with the boat, especially considering its cost of less than $40 shipped.

Here are a few pics of the boat. I will get some running video posted shortly. Feel free to ask any questions you might have, and happy sailing!

Let the new build begin. I hear the Eachine Tyro machines are a pretty good value in a 5 inch kit, so figured I'd build one and see for myself.

They spec out fairly nicely, and at the Tyro109's current price of $109 in the USA warehouse if it performs half decent it'll be hard to beat for a budget 5 inch quad.

Package Includes:
1 x 210mm frame kit
2 x 2206 2400KV brushless motor CW
2 x 2206 2400KV brushless motor CCW
1 x 4 IN 1 30A BLHeli_S ESC
1 x Customized F4 flight controller
1 x Caddx Turbo Eos2 1200tvl
1 x XF5804 5.8G 40CH 0mw/25mw/200mw/600mw switchable VTX
2 x Battery strap
1x Antenna
2x 5040 four-blade propeller CW
2 x 5040 four-blade propeller CCW

Will post updates as the build progresses.

EDIT-8/26/2019

Made some progress today. Frame went together perfectly.

EDIT-8/31/2019

EDIT-10/27/2019

I wasn't a big fan of the flight characteristics of the Tyro109 frame. It is just a little too "floaty" for my liking, and flying style. Decided to move all of the components over to a GEPRC GEP-VX5 frame. Hoping to get in a maiden this afternoon. Flight video coming as soon as weather permits....Continue Reading

My new TransTec Tiny Attack 66 66mm 1S brushless Tiny Whoop has arrived! I am very excited about this little guy. I am hoping it will be an excellent micro for indoor, and outdoor use in confined areas.

Hoping to get in a few flights with it this afternoon. Here are a few pics. More pics, info, and flight video coming ASAP. It's worth noting that regardless of which color version you purchase, you will receive all 3 canopies, and all 3 different colors of prop guards, so don't pay more for a specific color. The package also includes a lead with connector for the receiver, so aside from soldering the lead to the contacts on your RX, there really is no soldering required to get the quad up and flying.

Quick outdoor video using a GNB 450mah battery. This thing is a riot! More video and info coming soon

JJRC JJPRO X7 Brushless GPS Drone Review

The new JJRC JJPRO X7 Brushless GPS Ready To Fly (RTF) RC Drone with 1080P HD camera and transmitter controlled gimbal has finally arrived

I will start by saying that the quality of this model far exceeds my expectations. It has a look and feel to it that I wasn't expecting at this price point. The maiden flight went very well. All controls function exactly as they should. The drone is incredibly stable, and smooth. GPS hold is accurate and works perfectly, as does the GPS return to home function. You don't have to worry about losing this one, because with the press of a button, it will come right back to you and land itself as demonstrated in the video below.

One thing to take note of. If you want to fly this via the WiFi FPV with your smart phone or tablet, or view the live feed from the on board camera, you will need a 5G compatible device. Unfortunately my phone is not 5G capable, so I am only able to fly this LOS (line of sight) I am sure that in the very near future most phones will support 5G, and many of you probably already have phones that do.

Please be aware though that if your phone does not support 5G WiFi, there are a host of features that you won't be able to enable, or use. However, for those of you that just want a good flying brushless drone with GPS, and long flight times, this is certainly a model worthy of your consideration as it is a very good flying drone, with excellent range.

The new Tianqu Visuo XS812 GPS drone with HD camera has arrived!

EDIT-11/21/2018 This excellent quadcopter is available here for $78.99 during the early Black Friday sales going on now

This is an excellent value in ready to fly drones with GPS position hold, and return to home. The package includes everything you need to start flying your new quadcopter, and capture HD pictures, and video. Not only is the camera WiFi enabled, so you can use your phone, or tablet to see what the drone sees in real time, but the camera module also has a micro SD card slot allowing you to record your flights in higher quality than if you're just saving to your mobile device.

The GPS function is incredibly accurate, and does a great job of maintaining height, and position while shooting pics, or vid. You also get GPS return to home, so with the quick press of a button the drone will return and land itself within inches of where you took off from. A great feature which helps keep the pilot from losing the drone in the event that you lose orientation, or if you just want to bring it back without having to pilot it yourself.

Just like the other Tianqu Visuo quadcopters that came before it, the XS812 is a folding design making it very easy to travel with and store. When unfolded you still have a decent sized 250mm drone that is easy to fly, and large enough to still see at a distance. The XS812 is an excellent model for beginners just looking to get into the hobby, or for those that are...Continue Reading

At last my Eachine E015 3 in 1 has arrived! I have been anxiously awaiting this product. I expect it to be a lot of fun since it can be used in multiple configurations, and on a wide variety of surfaces. Rather than just another Tiny Whoop drone, in this box you get the parts necessary to turn your drone into a boat, or a hovercraft/Tiny Whoov.

I received the yellow version with two batteries, but this package is also available in red and with one, two, or three batteries. The price only varies a little bit with the extra batteries so I highly recommend getting the package with at least two batteries.

If you already have a bunch of Eachine E010, E011, FuriBee F36, JJRC H36 etc batteries, then you're in luck because they will all work with this E015. The E015 batteries are 220mah 35c so they are slightly higher capacity than the E010, H36, F36 original batteries.

In the box you also get a manual, a couple spare props, one CW and one CCW, along with a USB charger, screwdriver, and prop removal tool. All in all this is quite an interesting multi purpose RC vehicle available here for under $30

Check out the pics and stay tuned for running video demonstrations in each configuration. I have batteries charging now so I'll start getting some video ASAP.

As always please don't hesitate to ask any questions you might have. Happy RC'ing!!

HTRC H4AC Duo 2s-4s Dual Output LiPo Balance Charger Review

Are you looking for an affordable, compact, and easy to use LiPo balance charger, capable of charging two batteries at once? If so then this little H4AC might be just what you want.

This charger is about as easy to use as they come. Simply plug a battery into channel 1, or channel 2, or both, plug your balance connector into the appropriate port, and hit the start button. The charger will then begin charging your battery, or batteries, and the display will show the voltage of each individual cell being charged. It's as simple as that.

Each channel has a fixed output of 2A, so the charger is best suited for 1100-2400mah 2s-4s batteries. I have used it several times now on my Tattu 75c 1050mah 4s batteries, and it has been working flawlessly. Cells have been consistently finishing within .01v of each other on the chargers display, as well as when I use my cell checker/balancer which has always been accurate for me.

The fact that this little guy has a built in power supply makes it perfect for those that don't already own a 12v DC power supply. It is also quite small, so it takes up very little desktop, or bench space, and is super easy to travel with. You can see in the picture below just how small it is next to one of my 65mm Tiny Whoop Drones. Priced under $30 and Amazon Prime eligible, this is an excellent option for anyone on a tight budget, or as a backup/travel charger.

Don't hesitate to ask any...Continue Reading

EDIT 12/11/2019 Now back in stock, and available here for $119.99 during the Christmas sales at Banggood.

Flight Controller PDF Manual/Pin Out Diagram Thanks to member GCRC

The new Skystars S225/STX225 DIY Kit is now available. Looks to me like it is going to be an excellent value in the 5 inch FPV racer category. Specs look really good, and I am liking that we are seeing more and more of these quads available in kit form.

My kit arrived a couple days ago, and I finally got a chance to snap a few pics. Hoping to get started on the build this afternoon, and will post more pics as I make progress.

EDIT-10/2/2018

Build is complete. Added a bunch more pics below. Please don't hesitate to ask any questions, or request pics of something I missed. Flight video coming soon. Also added some large zoomable images of the F405 AIO Flight Controller (FC) pinout to aid in wiring for anyone else doing this build. Some of the print on my board was pretty faint and the pics helped me locate the necessary solder pads.

EDIT-10/3/2018

Managed a quick test flight today. Flies very smooth, and has a lot more punch, and speed than I was expecting, especially on 5042 high efficiency props. Should be really impressive on some 5152 props.

EDIT-12/04/2019 Banggood USA warehouse Ender 3 Pro $188 with free shipping.

Banggood USA warehouse Ender 3 Standard $162 with free shipping.

All orders over $99 are currently shipping free from the BG USA warehouse, so ignore any shown shipping charges on the product page. They will disappear once in your cart.

After using the Creality Ender 2 3D printer for nearly a year, and being very happy with the overall performance, and quality of the printer, it was time for an upgrade. See my time with the excellent Ender 2 here.

I wanted a new printer that would be of at least equal, if not greater quality than my Ender 2, and something that had a larger build area, but still had a heated build plate, yet remained affordable. Enter the Ender 3. The Ender 3 is one of the new printers for 2018 from Creality3D. This printer has a 220mm x 220mm x 250mm print area, a heated build plate, the popular MK10 extruder, and arrives with most of the assembly completed for you. I had mine from the box, to ready to print, in just over an hour.

I just built my Ender 3 yesterday, and have only done a few prints on it so far, but I am very happy to say that it has exceeded my expectations. I am amazed that such a nice printer can be had for under $200

This will be more of a log than a review, as I will share my prints, and experiences with the printer over the course of the next few months. My Ender 2 proved to be a very reliable machine. I did hundreds of prints, and for nearly...Continue Reading

Eachine has been bringing some excellent RC models to the market over the past few years. Some of their drones have been really big hits with beginners, and expert pilots alike. Today we are going to be taking a look at one of their new offerings the EX2H.

The EX2H is a complete ready to fly package that includes the brushless drone with 1806 1800kv motors, 2.4ghz radio transmitter with weak signal, and low battery telemtery, 7.4v 2s 1800mah LiPo battery, charger, and a 1080p HD camera for taking aerial videos, and pictures. You also get a set of prop guards, a set of spare props, and an 8gb micro SD card for the camera. The only thing you will need to get up and flying are 4 AA batteries for the radio.

Many of you will recognize the style, and design of this quadcopter, as it is very similar to the MJX Bugs series of multi rotors. It may even be a rebrand of an MJX model. Regardless, it is a very nice drone, that has a high quality look, and feel to it.

The EX2H is a very stable flyer that performs well in altitude hold mode, or in pro mode (no altitude hold). There is a switch on the transmitter that makes it very easy to select which mode you want to fly in. There is also two different speed rates, that can be used by pressing a button on the transmitter. In high speed mode the quad is quite sporty and capable of some pretty fast speeds, and makes it capable of flying in some pretty windy conditions.

Whether you are a beginner pilot, a pilot looking to take...Continue Reading
