The Phantom is the newest addition to our range of First Person View (FPV) models. It is a great flyer with very predictable handling qualities, excellent stability and lots of wing area to cope with additional loads for FPV use.

The Phantom features tough EPO construction with moulded in camera bays - one forward looking just under the nose and another mount in the top of the canopy with a plywood support pre-installed. This updated version features premium 3K wrapped carbon tube spars, and now breaks down into three pieces for easy transport.

Assembly of the airframe is very simple, literally four glue joints required - foam glue is also included!

This being the kit version you will require your own choice of 9gram servos, motor and speed controller - we suggest a low current power system not exceeding 30 amps, this will provide you with flights in excess of 30 minutes on a 3s 4500mAh lipo.

FPV pilots will appreciate the space under the canopy - it's cavernous! There is plenty of space for your choice FPV gear.

Features:
• Kit Version - Assemble and install your choice of electronics
• Ultra though EPO construction
• Ultra stable flight performance
• Excellent FPV platform
• 30 minute plus flight duration on 4500mAh 3s lipo
• Easy to Hand Launch, Easy to Land
• Stable Handling at Low and High Speeds
• Updated with 3K wrapped carbon tube spars
• Updated with removable outer wing panels for easy transport

No I don't mean the popular soft drink, or some kind of supernatural entity, but a type of upper atmospheric lightning. Here's how the Wikipedia article for upper atmospheric lightning begins:

Quote:
Upper-atmospheric lightning or ionospheric lightning are terms sometimes used by researchers to refer to a family of short-lived electrical-breakdown phenomena that occur well above the altitudes of normal lightning and storm clouds. Upper-atmospheric lightning is believed to be electrically induced forms of luminous plasma. The preferred usage is transient luminous event (TLE), because the various types of electrical-discharge phenomena in the upper atmosphere lack several characteristics of the more familiar tropospheric lightning.
Being a science enthusiast, since I first heard about the discovery of Sprites in the mid 1990's, I've been fascinated by the subject and have tried to find as much information as I could on this mysterious phenomenon. Red Sprites are the most common type of TLE, and appear above powerful thunderstorms, shooting up towards space. Some of them have been observed to go up 60 miles, all the way to the air glow layer at the edge of space!

Now I'm wondering if some of the starlight cameras we are putting on our model planes and multirotors could be used to capture video images of Red Sprites. I already have a Runcam Night Eagle 2 and I'm planning on building a night flying FPV wing with it using a Zeta FX-61...Continue Reading

I watched Matthew Ogbourne's videos on the new Sonicmodell F1 Wing and decided to order one. I'd like to do some more low level high speed flying and I'll need a tough EPP plane for that kind of mission. The EPP in the F1 Wing is supposed to be the toughest a lot of FPV pilots have ever seen.

There was a lot of buzz in 2015 when this glider first came out, a full house 3.7 meter e-glider for under $300! In 2016 Hobby King released the version 2 of this glider but had to raise the price to about $350. However I got a deal and was able to get an Aether kit for 30% off.

We're going to FPV this sucker up!

Quote:
The HobbyKing Aether is back and better than ever!

The fuselage is now fully fabricated from epoxy and where possible carbon fiber has been used for some parts providing exceptional strength without a weight penalty. The fiberglass firewall now comes pre-drilled ready to accept a motor of your choosing.

The large size and low cost make this a perfect entry level ALES model.

The Aether arrives as an almost ready to fly model, allowing you to customize it how you choose. Though it is a large model it disassembles easily. The wing breaks down into 4 pieces with a rugged carbon tube joiner for the center two wing panels and the tail assembly bolts to the fuselage and that means it will fit it all but the smallest of vehicles.

The large volume pod gives plenty of space for your battery and other equipment with access through the large carbon fiber canopy hatch being a breeze. The large wing, along with a generous amount of wing dihedral makes the Aether 3700 ultra stable. so its relaxing to fly and with large flaps to slow the model down, landings are feather light.

If you have never flown a large model, the Ather is confidence

Here's the third installment of my Budget FPV Build article. Prices for FPV components continue to fall and you can now get a really nice full setup for just over $500. If you decide not to buy a high res video camera that brings it down to only about $437! Two years ago I struggled to keep the cost under $1000. The build is also getting simpler as you can now buy the full video setup as one package deal for about $100.

This year I really wanted to recommend Stone Blue Airlines Phoenix 56" but the kit is $134.99 and that does not include the electronics like servos, motor, or ESC. Made out of EPP foam, it's a more durable plane than the Bix3, but the goal here is to keep the costs as low as possible, while avoiding cheap junk.

I am still a fan of the RMRC Surfer but the price has climbed slightly so I left it out this year. However if you are in the USA and the Bix3 is sold out, then the Surfer is a perfectly acceptable alternative for only a few dollars more.

The components I'm selecting here might not be something I'm flying but are well regarded in the FPV community.

Like my other blog posts this will be a work in progress and your input is welcome!

* - A word of caution, a lot of these items are very popular and can become hard to find during flying season in the northern hemisphere (April-November).

Copied from Reddit but I'll redact the user's name:

Quote:
Hey there - I picked up your name from a reply to a post 9 months ago.
I've recently put together a decent quadcopter build with FPV gear. I've been thinking how nice it would be to have a plane to tool around using some of the gear that is easy to borrow from the quad (mainly just the Tx, the "goggles", etc).
Is there a major difference between the Skywalker / Bixler / Skysurfer? Wondering if they are basically different badges put on very similar products. Also there are at least 3 versions of the Bixler - is one the "best"?
At the moment I was thinking of just having the standard gear (2 servos and esc) and FPV equipment. I'm seeing some other gear for flight stabilization, GPS for "return to home", etc. Is any of that gear pretty much a must have? I've seen a few setups that are just ridiculously complicated, and am interested in getting the best bang for the buck.
I'd like to buy whichever plane in a kit. I'd love to get the servos and motor, etc, but do not want the Rx/Tx because I feel they would be weak-ish and I'd rather use my Turnigy with the FrSky module - upgraded to ErSky9x.
I'd appreciate any direction you might have the time to provide.
The Skywalker, Bix, and Skysurfer are all on a similar layout but the Skywalker is a little different.

Skywalker - a venerable and proven FPV platform. There are several different models available....Continue Reading

So I have been flying FPV for going on three years now, and thought I understood what the Fresnel zone was, but as it turns out, I was completely wrong. I thought the FZ was something you "flew into", as in, flying behind a building on 5.8 would be "flying into the Fresnel zone." Alas, this is completely incorrect.

I was doing some web surfing on the FZ and stumbled across this illustration:

..and BANG! I realized I have been wrong all along about what the Fresnel zone is.

The definition from that site is this:
Quote:
The Fresnel zone is a football-shaped space between two transceivers – the longer the distance and the lower the frequency, the further across the Fresnel zone is.
Of course, for our application, the FZ would be a football-shaped space between a transmitter and a receiver.

I found this site useful as well, for visualizing what is going on.

Since I tend to be a very visual person, I made a quick illustration of what I think it might look like if you could actually see the FZ from the point of view of your video receiving antenna. Please forgive the MS Paint cartoon version of my flying site, and I can't claim that it's completely scientifically accurate.

So, in my illustration there are two FPV aircraft flying at the same distance away from the receiver. One has a 1.3ghz VTX and the other has a 5.8ghz VTX. The FZ would probably look a bit more "swirly" if I was using CP...Continue Reading
