3mm Depron wing ...

Time to start a 1 meter DIY DLG for HLG ....

This will be = Ripit 3 ( A lose dimensional copy of the Raven 990 )
Control inputs will be R/E ( Rudder / Elevator )

I can't fold depron to save my life ! After 3 attempts the results were seriously terrible ..
So I decided to use slightly more traditional methods ...

1) I cut out the wing panels from 3mm Depron
2) Glued a balsa leading edge to the base panel /s
3) Spar is the same size balsa as on the LE
4) Then I glued in the top depron panel to the LE first
5) Then I glued the spar and the panels together on the floor with a lot of books holding things in place and flat / straight ..
6) Once the wing was dry I then glued the tips
7) With the wing glued I then did the sanding
8) Once sanded the wing was laminated with 10Thou laminating film

I still need to glass the centre of the wing ...
Not sure yet how I will do the wing mount , as I have not decided on the boom just yet ..
I have two carbon rods , one is 12 grams and the other is 20 grams ..
The wing as pictured is a hair under 52 grams ( Why do I think its heavy ? )

Anyhow , with this build I was starting with the wing !

I've been flying this protocol that I wrote since about Oct. The purpose was to see how low of latency and fast of data rate I could push it. No telemetry for now. It is based roughly on frsky_x (to help with code reuse).

Support is currently with devationTx transmitters and FC with spi cc2500 chips (Crazybee, Matek411RX, couple others). Looking at a multimodule version as well, but figured I would start here.

Flying really stable at 1.5ms loop time (666Hz). RC looptime and packetsize is adjustable (on deviation menus) for testing for now. Pushed it higher up to 1ms/1kHz rate, but ran into deviation cpu limits (and maybe BF not getting to the spi RX code fast enough always)

Latency results are awesome. 1-5ms from transmitter gimbal to betaflight dshot motor output. Compared to 7-20ms with crossfire on taranis and 18-37ms with frsky_x to X4r on a taranis. Hopping back to my taranis and you can really feel the difference.

4 11-bit channels and 12 1-bit aux channels. Total RC packet squashed down to 12-14 bytes. Although that could be bumped up if needed for anything.

I'll fully write up the protocol when it is pulled in any everything set in stone.

Range is still pretty good even though the cc2500 bitrate was bumped up. I lose RX on a crazybeef3 (no pa/lna) at about the range of 25mw VTx. Matek411rx with pa/lna, I get plently of range to cover any racetrack so far.

After an unfortunate crash of my Silver B-26, there were some repairs needed. I thought this was a good time to modify the bomb bay that I had originally installed. Now, this B-26 has already been modified to remove and replace the stock motors, ESC's and retracts. All of these mods are identical to the mods made to my green B-26 "Valkyrie", so there is no need to rehash them here.

This mod was to re-make the bomb bay to make it better and to increase the capacity of the bomb bay. To make room for the bombs and bomb release system, I moved the rudder and elevator servos about 10 inches aft. Using the damaged fuselage as a model, I was able to make some precision cuts to create the new servo bay. To access these two servos, I created a hatch with rare earth magnets to secure it in place.

With the servos removed, I was able to basically gut the interior of the fuselage to make additional usable space. It was my intention to utilize the very good "Adam Bombs" for this plane. Yes, the bombs are out of scale, but dropping these bombs filled with powder on ground targets is so much more impressive. I could have fit 4 or 5 of "the Adam Bombs" in the bay but by doing this, there was no room for a bomb drop device. So, I opted to make a bomb release device which only allowed the use of 2 of the bombs. I recommend the "Adam Bombs" to anyone that has the urge to drop bombs with their aircraft. So i mailed an item to Alaska in an envelope. It must have gotten ripped open during USPS handling and sorting. So it has been lost or stolen by USPS (it sounded like lost).

My customer only got the envelope... nothing in it. Wow

I have never had a problem with envelopes. In hindsight a box may have been better (especially going long distances) because the item(s) was not flat like paper.

Now i am waiting on PayPal so i can refund the customer's money. It may take a few days to even refund the money because i cannot use my bank card for refunds via Paypal and must take another step. Gr8 m8....

Well, i am thankful my customer has been cool about this so far. I really have never had any problems with USPS but this incident and...
...recently i had an order incoming (to me) via USPS that was 4 days late! It finally arrived today--but i was sure worried after seeing it travel backwards between nearby distribution centers ...and today hearing about my Alaska shipping incident.

It looks like Ground shipping does not get the same treatment as Priority, far as i can tell. Both of these were Ground or basic shipments

In 1080p 60fps - Best viewed in fullscreen. This is the maiden flight of my Eflite Extra 300 1.3m wingspan BNF Basic. Not only is it my first flight with this amazing machine, it's also my first time being chased and recorded by a drone (thanks Jeff). Given that we aren't pros I think it turned out pretty well!

My Eflite Extra 300 1.3m is completely stock. Powered by a Pulse 4S 2250mAh 45C lipo, weighing in at 240 grams. CG was set rearmost to 100mm from the leading edge of the main wing at the fuselage. Flight Timer was set to 3 minutes as recommended by the manual. Flown with a Spektrum DX8 G2 Transmitter at 100% rates and 30% expo on all control surfaces.

Jeff's Drone is a Diatone GT-M530, Ethik S3 props, Frisky R9M Rx, VAS Ion antenna, Frisky Taranis Tx with R9 Long Range Module, GoPro Session 5.

Way back when I was a young teen I built the Astro Flight Malibu, it was I think my second rc glider. It met it’s fate on the very first flight being I was an absolute novice with no guidance whatsoever on how to control an rc glider. I convinced my dad to take me to the highest dune of sorts along the beach (not very high at all) not very far from home, there was a very good wind, my recollection about 20 mph or more. Dad launches glider into the wind and it immediately noses up, rolls to the left and crashes into the Australian pines not very far behind the dune, so much for the Malibu I eventually learned to fly an rc glider with the Astro Flight Monterey a year or two later via histart with no guidance, (1970-71 approx). RCG Classified had a Malibu for sale so I jumped on it, bring back the Malibu you never got to successfully fly as a youngster. The kit arrived very qickly, thank you sender. Anyways the picture on the face of the package resembles what I vaguely remember from way back in maybe 1969 or so. I remember building a fully sheeted wing at the time with rubber band attachment, this kit was obviously a revised kit by Astro Flight a few years later encorporating their new design technology ie the Monterey, two piece wing with metal joiner, open wing structure, my guess not even the original airfoil, this one being the Eppler 387. In any event it’s all cool, my new Malibu will fly again, successfully I hope after close to 40 years

Finally did not Rip the wing ( off the fuse )
I used some foam safe cyno as it soaks into the foam , should distribute load better ( launch load ) .
That thick wing was maybe a mistake ..
The R2.8 does not like to push thru a breeze at all .
In the video you can hear the breeze pick up and the R2.8 simply can not fly forward , but rather side slips !
Makes tuning tricky when the wind pushes the R2.8 around ..
But after the cam battery gave out I put in more of a neutral Elevator setting and the trim looks to be better .

Haven’t flown either glider in quite a while, both thermal gliders primarily, slope capable but not really designed for strong wind or aerobatics. The day was zilch for slope lift really so I brought a very anemic upstart to use on the west side of the hill. There we have a fairly large flat area to launch north or south using winch or histart. First to fly was the Ka 8. Although I had made forward cg adjustments quite a while back that really helped stabilize in pitch I decided to add just a bit more for safety/comfort. 1/2 oz my guess. The launches were very amemic maybe 35-40 feet max, a real bummer but gave me enough altitude to get a feel for her again. The pitch was way too sensitive I discovered, maybe it was because I had used the innermost hole on the control horn instead of the outermost hole? Making that adjustment created a whole new glider, everything was very smooth in pitch. A couple more uneventful anemic launches had me rolling up the anemic histart and headed over to the north side of the hill where the buzzards seemed to be congregating along with a very fickle northerly breeze. Slope soaring on such days is a fools errand, you will do a lot of walking to retrieve your glider well below the hill top, trust me So, timing your hand launch is critical, where are the buzzards, small hawks or even swallows swooping in to get a meal of insects drawn up by the updrafts, has the breeze shifted, and in what direction? I had been wanting a transmitter glove for a while so I could do some RC stuff in the winter. Well I finally obtained one here recently and even though I've only used it once, it has proven to be a great investment.
