Assembly has started !
I am at the point where I have to think about the power plant ( motor ) .
Front section is only tapped on for the picture .

Ailerons needs doing !
Motor / ESC / Battery for CG and power .
The fuse seems tolerable for weight , but that wing is a house brick !

I have a motor , and I will have to test it first . I need thrust and a fair bit of it to haul this house brick !
This plane is not going to fly slow . And I thought the Super Kinetic was heavy !

Most of the major parts are prinTED !
Now comes the assembly part of the project .
As mentioned previously I am starting the assembly from the beehive end of the plane and working my way forward .
The last part of the assembly will be the forward fuselage section .
Motor needs to be fitted
And work out that CG .
Also need to see about Thrust .. I have one motor thats big enough ( heavy for CG ) and hopefully make some power .

Weight ... 250 grams so far .. ( prinTED parts )

Those joins are going to be weak spots , do I need to do something *ugly ( functional but ugly ) like maybe some fibreglass reinforcement ?
Section 4 glued to section 3 was a real slop fit .. Needed a large rubber band to keep it together long enough for the cyno to dry . Not confidence building !
Maybe drill a hole and fit a carbon rod thru the fuse to hold it together like a pin ?

Spirit 600 Maiden (5 min 11 sec)

Spirit 600mm Wing maiden = My 120 gram ( Wet ) model , been on the wall how long ? At last took it out for its maiden . ( Fantastic )

120 grams flying weight .

PrinTED Wing 01 for that 3D printed plane .. Wow , took a long time to print , and the weight ? Those wing panels are stiff and strong and HEAVY .
Oh boy ! , no wonder this plane comes in close to half a kilo flying weight ?
Printing Wing 02 at the moment .
Honestly , this plane needs to go on a diet . ( It is going to be a HUGE PORK Chop )

Panels weigh ! 42.5 grams and 42.9 grams for 85.4 grams in total for a partial wing .
Still have panels 02 - 03 and 04 to do ...

LDARC 450x Wing .
This is the plug and play version with a flight control board .
Plug in a S bus Rx and go fly .

I have been so impressed by my 450x wings ( no flight control ) 2s Brush-less and 1s Brushed versions .. ( They fly great )
So I promised myself that as soon as the PNP was discounted I would buy one ..
And that was just recently .. Less than 100 ozzi bananas .
Hopefully get some more Rx ASAP .
If this thing flies stable and stability does a good job , I will put in a FPV camera .

Ooops . printing the wing right now . A long , long ............................ Long ! print time for the wing .

The fuselage is prinTED and I have mixed feelings about it .

Fuse 01 = 26.8 grams ..
A) Came out of the printer OK , looks ok ! The tabs used for joining Fuse 01 to Fuse 02 are fragile and under engineered . Pictured is carbon rod re-enforcement . The bottom tabs have already broken off . Fuse 01 is strong , really strong .
B) There are certain design flaws aside from the weak joining tabs . The motor .. Has to go in before you glue the fuse and then what ? If the screws come lose how do you tighten them after assembly ? Obviously you need to break the damned thing .
C) Weight . Cant get past the fact that there is a lot of weight here for good or bad .

Fuse 02 = 17.7 grams
A) Little to complain about here , possibly the best thought out part

Fuse 03 = 18 grams
A) Seriously strong , possibly overly engineered and heavy for it's size .

Fuse 04 = 20.3 grams
A) Porky Pig .. Again I think over engineered and seriously over weight .
B) The joining tab is way short , this is a design flaw ( in my opinion ) and creates a weak point .
C) ???? I dont know about the tail section ...

Over all , it's probably the most refined model out there for free . ( Printable ) But if we do the maths
26.8 + 17.7 + 18 + 20.3 = 82.8 grams ..

And thats just the Fuse ...
I dont think I have a motor that can fit and pull a house brick at the moment .
Sort of Ho humming continuing , but I think I have to ..
Pictured = I fitted a small motor and folding prop , but they only do about 150 grams thrust as a combo .
To fly this safely , I would assume at least a minimum of 250 grams of thrust ..
If this really has a projected weight of 450 grams .. Thats a lot of weight .
I think you want it a lot lighter than that . But you may need a lot of motor to compensate for the heavy ass on this plane ( CG )

My 3D printer has been idle for some time so I thought it was time to do that 3D printed plane thing .
Problem is , finding something that I want to print . Is going to be small and light enough to play with .
And no such animal exists !

6x4E Prop = 4.27 grams ( For OMPHobby S720 ? )
Factory prop comes in at 2.41 grams .. That really is a significant difference . Especially for gyroscopic effect .

X-BOSS Receiver ( AC900 )
Apparently does both S-FHSS and D16 FrSky .

I saw this Rx some time ago , but at the time had no need of S.bus , now I find myself in need of such .

So hopefully will be playing with this one soon .

Volantex Sport Cub 500 @ the field (6 min 12 sec)

Took the Volantex Sport Cub 500 for a walk Saturday afternoon .
I beat the wind , or the wind let me fly . Either way , as soon as I was done the wind picked up .
Love the Sport Cub 500 , a real fun little plane . It really needs more aileron to do something other than loop .

For a RTF plane , it is a hoot though .

Just trying out the S720 on the factory prop .

Factory prop rules around mid throttle ..

But I cant say that vertical is that much better than the Gemfan 6030 .. @ full throttle .

OMPHobby S720 with a Gemfan 6030 (4 min 37 sec)

At full throttle it is not horrible , at least the GF6030 pulls at the very least a full AMP less than the factory prop . But the performance curve is way different .

With the factory prop you can fly around comfortably @ 50% throttle . With the GF6030 50% throttle is what you use when you come in to land to keep the nose up . @ 50% throttle , the GF6030 could barely keep the S720 in the air .

I did try some vertical stuff , but since I havent done any with the King Kong 5045 or the factory prop ? I have nothing to compare too .

It flies and at or near full throttle there seems to be decent performance .
What is going to matter most I think is how well a prop pulls the plane when it goes vertical and unfortunately so far I have only done that with the GF6030 .

OMPHobby S720 in the rain (6 min 27 sec)

In the rain !

What a PITA . Wind on the way , so of course I had to fly this morning ( No wind ) .. And naturally it had to rain .

OMPHobby S720 with a Eachine 119 S-FHSS Rx . Yes, I get to fly it on the Taranis ( F something rain )

What should have been fun , was and wasn't .

A) Taranis = Rock solid ! Just Chalk and Cheese .. Fact Trashmitter is chalk ! If anything elevator needs expo .
B) S720 = Has a tendency to drop it's nose if you use the elevator ( stabilised mode )and then after 1 or two meters flies level . This is a bad tendency during a landing .
C) I broke the S720 = Yes , on my first landing ( due to the rain ) I made the mistake of letting the model have neutral elevator .. This resulted in the S720 dropping the nose and the wheels caught the grass and tore the landing gear back . Yes the bottom of the fuse where the gear goes in , was torn ( Foam ) . Thankfully a easy repair . ( I keep flying and landing )
D) Ailerons = are a little soft .. A little more would be nice .
E) King Kong 5045 prop = For this flight I had hacked on a King Kong 5045 prop to see if it would work as a replacement for the factory prop which apparently is a little hard to find ( buy ) . Current draw is close to factory prop , but the thrust did seem a bit down . Plan was to stunt the S720 a bit to test out the prop , but that rain ! ( I did a little )

Mini Surfer 800 with landing gear (3 min 36 sec)

Took my Mini Surfer 800 out . Put on some landing gear from the MG800 .

Needed full power for a clean launch , those small wheels were really catching the grass .

Did hunt the sky , so needed trim for level flight , but once trimmed . SO easy to fly . And I flew it so slow .

Landing was bouncy bouncy . Hmmmm , might be better without wheels !

Rx came for the OMPHobby S720 ..

It be the Eachine one , and I am not sure I like it . Range tested to about 20 meters with the model on the ground . ( Range test mode )

Eeeeer ???/ Rudder is being a little funky for some reason , not sure whats going on there ?
Do I need a DSM2/x Sat Rx ? Like in the T720 ( No issues ) .

Took my 450x LDARC wing out the other day . Such a nice model to fly ..

For a long time now Stainless Steel has dominated the knife market ! This can be either good or bad . Especially the budget knife sector seems to have been taken over by stain less ! A first it was japanese knives , then chinese knives . Either way there have been a lot of disappointing knives over the last 40 or so years . Of course there has also been the knives I could trust , but the pocket knife market has certainly been inundated with rubbish .

The last 10 years there was one knife I simply refused to buy , the Opinel ! Dost ask me why ? , my finger has hovered over the buy button now for at least a decade . And while I pulled the trigger on many a rubbish knife the Opinel always went unwanted . That was till the other day when I took some of my Chinese pocket knives on a cardboard cutting adventure , and most of them failed horribly . My old R3 Remington has gone unchallenged for at least a decade now and before then it was English / German / Swedish knives .

So with my cardboard cutting reality fresh in the back of my mind , I finally dropped coin on the Opinel in hopes of getting a knife that can cut and hold an edge .

Opinel No8 Carbon

Came this morning ! The edge had a terrible bur on it , so I had to do some edge maintenance before rushing outside to cut cardboard into strips .

Bee 490 ..
Put some more weight in the nose and it hunts much less now .
Having had a little experience with this wing .
A) It certainly is not the best slow wing , give it some speed and it flies ok . Make it too heavy and it tends to fall out of the sky , especially close to the ground .
It is after all only a 490mm Wing .
B) A big plus , it's a twin wing kit
C) Geez , and crazy strong ! Build it uber light , and it will be hard to break .

PLA wing ribs !

Time to start thinking about a new wing .. How about PLA wing ribs ? Balsa LE and TE , carbon spar ?
I was a little ( VERY ) disappointed in the Depron wing that went on the V911 HLG .
So time to start planning on a more serious 3D printed HLG built around the F949 flight control board .
Also correcting some design flaws that are rather serious when the glider is take into the field .
Nose cone is plenty strong ( A pleasant surprise ) , but the execution of the all moving elevator is flawed . Playing with a new design now . ( Revision 3.1 )

Funny how something might look good in the design software , but once printed is garbage

3D printed V911 HLG at the field (6 min 3 sec)

Lots of issues , some of which which will be dealt with with the F949 HLG build.

A) CG is too far back = Easy to correct , just move the wing back .
B) The elevator control arm is in the worst possible location
C) I smacked the ground with the V911 HLG and nothing broke .
D) Flying weight = 55.60 grams with a Nanotech 1s 300mAh battery . Without batt is around 47.3 grams
E) That wing is warped , had a built in right turn that needed a lot of left rudder to correct . I saw it happen when I put on the laminating film . And since then have tried to take out he warp , tried !!!

Its 10 grams heavier than what I would have liked . Just for giggles I weighed my R1 , an all depron build and my first glider build in over 3 Decades . Came out at 50 grams less battery , so I guess the V911 HLG is not all that terrible .
Oh well , hopefully some ideas will cross my design board by the time the F949 flight board gets here .

Still hunts up and down a little ( rearward CG ) , but it flies .
Motor did not cook the prop off the output shaft ! = Thats nice .
Maybe one more bit of lead shot in the nose ?
