I've been busy engineering race quads for the 2020 season. I want something that's aerodynamic so the js-1 caught my eye with its streamlined pod. I also like durability and the carbon arches inside the pod seem like they should protect the stack pretty well. As an added bonus, it should be a pretty good all weather flyer with most everything enclosed. This is also my first ever build with a futaba rx (r2000sbm) to pair with my new-to-me futaba 16SZ. Full parts list at the bottom...

I started by assembling the frame. Use the included bolt and washer to install the press nuts on the top plate (not pictured). I used 14mm bolts on the outboard arm holes and the included long bolts for the inboard 30.5mm spacing holes. Just threaded them in enough so the ends were coming through the other side

This week DJI demonstrated their vision of what Drone To Phone Remote ID may look like inline with whatís being proposed in the USA under the NPRM and that is in legislation in the new EASA EU regulation package.



Solutions For The Drone Age: DJI Drone-To-Phone Broadcast Remote ID (3 min 19 sec)


As part of the NPRM proposals in both Network ID and Broadcast ID and the the EASA EU2019/945 & 947 regulations coming into force in July is the requirement for the pilots location to be shared as part of the the Remote ID data being transmitted.



While itís is not absolutely 100% certain that all the information including the pilot location will be available for all to see the only realistic way to interpret these new rules as proposed and written today is that it will be fully open to anyone with just an app on a regular smart device.



This raises genuine concerns for pilots privacy and safety while out enjoying a hobby with anyone being able to pinpoint a pilots location at any time for good or bad reason. Commercial drone operators have very real concerns especially and these rules may put them at additional risk of landing area incursions and incidents not foreseen in the passed. It could even render single man flight ops a thing of the passed when your unable to secure your operating area sufficiently now itís going to be generally publicised. I had some solartex {sky blue} but had never used it before.
I know that it is highly prized and the slope guys love it so I thought I would give it a try and see if I could cover the epp canopy on my DAW P-51 with it in just one piece .

MG800 round two (12 min 0 sec)


This was originally supposed to be sub 250 , and it was ! Butt .....

The CG was too far back ( 70mm ) and the ESC was faulty , cutting the motor as soon as you went over 3A current draw .

This flight C of G was around 60mm and the battery was a Nanotech 1000mAh 2s ..
Flying weight from MEM was around 268 grams .
New ESC is a 10A Turnigy ..

It has taken a long , long time to get back to this model . I think I can forget about Sub 250 with this one .
The CG would most likely want to come forward a little , maybe start around 50mm from the LE for more stability .
Roll axis stability still bites , and trying to fly straight and level is a little challenging .
The MG800 wants to roll left or right when trying to fly straight . I may need to pull out some expo for faster response time to help tame the roll .
@ 60mm CG , the elevator is still sensitive , I am still @ 100% rates . So maybe lowering the rates to 80% and jacking up the expo a little ?

Flight time with the 1000 mAh battery was around 15 minutes @ 50% throttle , cell voltage was 3.79v when I got home . I ended the flight when I noticed some battery sag ( power sag ) .

I think my last entry was the rickety old bridge. We calibrated the climb and realized it was 55į steep incline at the top of the bridge which is almost difficult to climb. However we both have crawled our trucks over it. We will be expanding the area where we crawl. I am currently building a teeter totter to put in the middle of our course and my brother feels that we need to work on the water feature. He wants a waterfall. I have a circulating pump so we will have something put together by summer. My brothers RGT took on some damage he broke an axle and we waited for the parts to come in. He was operating in 3 wheel drive for a while. He is now back to 4 wheel drive. I have been thinking about getting into 3D printing. I want to make accessories for my truck. Iíll let you know what I decide to get in the next couple of weeks. Our 3rd crawler the WL 10428 is out of commission we blew out the plastic gears in the steering servo. I have the servo on order but we are also thinking of getting a build kit and maybe making a truck out of the WL parts while waiting on the parts from that country that takes forever to send things out. I just really want to get that green buggy back on the track. For now Iíll leave a few photos. I have a climb video coming soon. For now enjoy whatís left of winter itís starting to warm up on the East Coast.

My 1st turbine plane....what a way to start.

In 2014, a friend of mine gave me a Joe Saitta ME 163B that had been handed down thru many hands since 1999. The model had never been started, it was a propeller driven, 82", ME 163B short kit. It still had the original plans, Fiberglass fuselage and some of the ribs and bulkheads. The rest had been lost thru time.

I contacted Joe Saitta thru email. He was very supportive and indicated that things had changed since 1999, now his model was turbine powered. The fuselage was the same as well as the wings, but the bulkheads and other items in the fuselage guts had changed. He prepared an upgrade kit for me and I was ready to start.

I had been building models for some decades, so this was not an issue. Turbines was another thing, I had no knowledge of them. Nor was I AMA turbine certified. A good friend of mine, Juan Garcia, became my mentor and taught me all I had to know on this power plants and models.

I finished the model in a few months. Since this plane lands on a skid, landing gear is detached on takeoff. I prepared an aluminum skid that follows the external contour of the fuselage. This will protect the belly of the plane upon landing in grass field. The landing gear/dolly was made of wood and aluminum and version 1.5 was the perfect one which I have been using the past five years. I just completed my second plane, an E-flite Valiant, 1300mm. The kit was nice and easy to assemble. Although I am partial to scale aircraft, I chose this plane for use as a trainer due to its forgiving nature and ability to fly a slower speeds.


I made a few cosmetic changes by removing all the ugly decals and replacing them with a custom set I made and had printed on water-slide decal paper. I limited these decals to just registration numbers, a few indicating the type (Valiant 480E--since that is how it is listed in the instruction manual), and some blue and silver striping on the wheel pants. I also painted the propeller tips in white. By removing the decals on the blue colored surfaces quite a bit of paint was pulled off. To remedy this I used some matte acrylic Apple Barrel Cobalt-Hue paint to cover the bare surface, and then sealed it with clear satin water-based Polycrylic Minwax. I came out to a perfect match and is very difficult to tell from the original finish!


I also purchased a set of floats for this plane which I am in the process of modifying by adding a set of water rudders and a waterproof steering servo.

I'm new to the world of radio control aviation. I've been wanting to get into this hobby since I was a kid the 1970s, however due to the cost, raising a family, and my duties a a Marine, I had to put it off. With the advent of the age of low-cost computer technology and the use of foam for model kits, RC aviation is now both affordable and much easier than it was in the past.


In October, I purchased and built my first model, and E-flite PT-17. Actually, since it has Navy markings it is technically an N2S. I was really impressed with this kit, and with the assistance of Monofoil Man, I was able to detail the aircraft with authentic decals, rigging, and many other scale details. I also joined the AMA and our local flying club, the Dare County RC Flyers.
