This is the Maiden Flight of my Eflite P-51D Mustang 280 using a Spektrum DX6 Transmitter and an Eflite 3S 450mAh 30C Lipo Battery.

Following the success of my Eflite Mitsubishi A6M5 Zero 300, I decided to hunt down one of these discontinued planes and finally found a seller with one of these, brand new in the box.

Much like the Eflite Mitsubishi A6M5 Zero 300, this particular model had its own unique list of issues to address prior to the first flight, upon reading the RC Groups Forum Thread for this particular model. I've listed below the most common issues that were reported and how I resolved them:

1) Extreme Vibration from Prop, Spinner, or both. Resolution: I must have been fortunate, but the Prop and Spinner are both vibration free and throttles very smoothly throughout the range of RPMs.

2) Fuselage cracking and splitting in the midsection. Resolution: My particular model showed no symptoms of a cracking fuselage, but to be on the safe side I applied .050 Carbon Fiber Rod Spars on both sides of the inner lip of the interior midsection of the fuselage, increasing the stiffness and structural integrity.

3) Servo Failure. Resolution: All servos functioning properly with no symptoms of servo failure on my model. No issues.

This is an aerobatic flight demonstration of my older model Parkzone Sport Cub S2, outfitted with an APC 10 x 7 Slow Flyer Propeller, 30-Amp Pro Switch-Mode BEC Brushless ESC (V2), and Dave Brown Treaded Lite Flite 3-1/2" Wheels.

With the emergence of newer and more technologically featured models like the Durafly Tundra and Eflite Timber, I had a desire to show my appreciation for my older and venerable Parkzone Sport Cub S2.

The Parkzone Sport Cub S2 is the largest plane in my fleet, as most of my planes are Ultra Micros, UMX, and 280-sized aircraft. While I mainly enjoy flying the smaller size of RC fixed wing aircraft, nothing compares to a flight session in this plane, sporting such a wide flight envelope and versatility. This is a Cub that is a joy to fly, always leaving me with a wide grin from cheek to cheek.

I have an appreciation for the classics and the discontinued models of years past. Fortune was in my favor as I managed to purchase this model "Brand New In the Box" from a seller last winter and had stored it until this summer season. Doing research on RC Groups I learned that prior to flying the Zero, it would need a little pre-Maiden Flight attention as this particular model on its initial release from Horizon had a few minor issues to sort out. The below list explains a few of the issues that I resolved prior to the Maiden Flight:

1) Tail-Heavy. Resolution: I use Venom Fly 2S 800mAh packs pushed all the way forward into the battery slot.

2) Cowl breaking. Resolution: No issues with this as I slide on the grass for belly landings just fine. Don't crash and the cowl stays intact.

3) Cowl sliding forward or backward and causing motor vibrations. Resolution: Find the spot where the motor and the prop don't rub, align the cowl to that point and add 2 small drops of foam safe CA to hold the cowl at that point in place.

4) Control surface joints sticking or attachments loose. Resolution: Its always been my practice to inspect the attachments, and tighten them as needed. Then secure them further with a perimeter of foam safe CA. All...Continue Reading

Happy 4th of July! A bit of a different video in my line-up with good lessons to learn when flying RC Aircraft. Flying a little more frequently at a different park, we met Jim, a nice man and fellow RC Pilot who owns a balsa Piper J-3 Cub made by Mountain Models RC: http://www.mountainmodels.com/produc...roducts_id=472

Jim had been having issues trimming out his J-3 Cub, as it had suffered a few crashes prior due to some "un-flyability" tendencies that the plane had (the cowl was previously damaged which was why it was not installed) and was looking for someone to help diagnose and trim out his plane.

I hesitatingly offered to assist. To begin with, I was a bit nervous about flying another Pilot's plane.. It's one thing if I crash a plane in my fleet, I can always own up to that, but I would feel terrible if it was someone else's plane. The issues Jim was describing also made it seem like this scenario was a crash waiting to happen. Finally, the weather conditions didn't seem favorable for performing any sort of test flights. But I absolutely wanted to help get his J-3 Cub airworthy and get Jim flying his J-3 Cub again. So with the help of my friends, Mike "Deuces Wild" Frontiero and Ron "Captain Muscles" Ascoli, we made an effort to assist.

There is an old saying that "a nose heavy plane flies poorly, but a tail heavy plane flies once." Also, when building an airplane, the plans may call out for the CG of a plane to have the battery situated at a certain location, but there is no true test of airworthy-ness until you fly it.
