Here are the drawings and printwood for "Das Ugly Glider", my take on a 60" powered glider, inspired by Phil Kraft's Ugly Stik. I wanted an easy-to-build mid sized glider that didn't require a tow, winch, or hi-start to fly, and since my favorite all time airplane is the Ugly Stik (I think I've built at least 6 of them), I decided to use that as my basis for design.

I also chose to use the "tab-in-slot" technique for assembly, and it paid off. This thing went together in no time.

So, in tribute to Mr. Kraft, I give you :

Das Ugly Glider

64" tip to tip
Clark-YH airfoil (modified)
17gram metal gear digital servos
6-channel Spectrum receiver
2217-07 1200 kV motor (480 size)
8x4 folding prop
40 amp ESC
2200 mah 35C 3-cell

The assembly is pretty straight forward, though I leave it up to the builder to chose how to hinge the control surfaces, servo placement, shear webs, and spar joiners. I have my own way of doing things, but they may not fit another builders techniques. At any rate, it's just a Stik, albeit with the proportions and aspect ratio of an old school glider.

Have fun

Oh, and here's a better "glamour" shot.

Down to push rods and control horns....and I'm going to add the red and blue stripes to the stab to match the wing.....but I like it !!!!!

Edit note....I added the stripes to the stab.......

Das Ugly Glider - Part 8

Alternate color scheme......Still have to cover the stab..Fuse and fin are white, black landing skids. Pic tomorrow...'supposed to rain all weekend.....

Of note, I'd forgotten what a PITA scalloped control surfaces were to cover...LOL

Well today's clustermess is courtesy of the US Postal Service (Wait, did I say "service" ??) Seems my covering material left Gurnee IL 8 days ago, traveled to Charlotte NC, and is now on it's way to Dallas TX.....Did I mention I'm in Memphis TN ?

I don't have any words for this situation (well, I do, but they would get me banned from RCG) So I changed the color scheme for the glider..white with red and blue shoulder stripes, black trim....Pictures soon

Das Ugly Glider - Part 6

Got the motor and folding prop fitted and balanced, installed the battery and ESC, checked the weight so far (31 oz), and then put her on the CG balance.....right smack dab where she's supposed to (20% of MAC). I figure that the covering will add another 2 ounces (9.5 sq ft) so the estimated AUW will be 33 oz. Projected wing loading will be 33 oz/ 3.41 sq ft = 9.67 oz/sq ft.....Couldn't be more pleased

Just waiting on covering material now

Das Ugly Glider - Part 4

Got the center section of the wing done and hinged the feathers...Will start on the outboard sections of the wing today

Das Ugly Glider - Part 3

Very productive day...and very pleased with the weight...got the fuse assembled and dry fit the tail section...I'll be darned if it doesn't look like a little Ugly Stik...The Tab-A-into-Slot-B method made the assembly so easy...I guess I'll start on the wing tomorrow

There's an airplane in there somewhere..I swear it is..now I just have to figure out where all these parts go.....LOL

I cut all the parts this morning, and starting to assemble. Wing ribs are 1/8", Fuse sides are 1/8", Fuse top, bottom, stab and fin are 3/16, as are the ailerons, wing tips and TE

So here's what I'm gonna cut and build..I'm pretty sure Phil Kraft didn't have this in mind...still have a little banjo work to do, but I like the proportions

I'm determined to build a conventional glider, but this time, I'm not going to try to use an 8 year old wing....and yes, she'll be based on an Ugly Stik.

First guess is a ~60" wing span with either a PW-51 or an Aquila Airfoil.Stay tuned

Chicken Soup for the Soul.....after yesterday's disappointment, I decided I needed a "feel good"...cut her out this morning...starting the paint job now....

Well, yesterday ended in disaster for the Scrap Glider....I was moving the airplane from one portion of the shop to another, stumbled (not paying attention) and crushed the airframe...broke the fuse in half and the wing in 3 places....I guess she was never meant to fly ...Guess I'll start on something else...POOP !

There's a small step between the new and old portions of the shop, and I missed....just clumsy..I feel lucky I didn't break anything more than the airplane, or require stitches somewhere.....could have been a lot worse

And the Darwin Award for the day goes to..drum roll,...ME...not sure what I was thinking when I bought these little motors (2830-1200), but instead of TLAR, these are TDLR....."That Don't Look Right !"..So I mounted the larger motor (3530-1100) and a larger battery..Good news is that the airplane balances just forward of the spar........the bad news is my folding prop won't work....However, there may be a TU-95 Bear foamie as a result.....In the words of my second favorite philosopher, Walter..."Dumb Ass !"

Das Ugly Glider
Finished the fuse and feathers, and I got to looking at it, and guess what ? The fuse is a slender Ugly Stik fuselage....Go figure.

Waiting on the motors to get here.....will start covering today

Trying to design a fuse and feathers for this old wing...Does this look proportional ??
