ELF DLG , been a long time (14 min 4 sec)


I really like the ELF , amazing technology built into a 2ch glider .
Lift ? Where is the lift ?
I got teased by some rising air , just a tease . We just dont have much lift around here , lot's of sink , but that lift .
Next time I will try a lighter / smaller battery and have a more rearward CG .

Rusty flying on my part . Quite a few times I pushed the nose over too quickly , I might have got another 10 meters if I did not pull the trigger so early .

A) Love how it looks - that's where the love ends !
B) The nose should have been longer , so that folks could have a battery choice
C) As designed , almost impossible to make CG without lead in the nose .
D) I had to make a custom battery that barely makes it into the battery compartment . And my CG is still rearward .
E) Still needs more nose weight , brass prop nut ? . steel maybe ? ( ill have to check that ) CG needs to be further forward .

The EZIO hunts up and down because of the CG , is super sensitive on the elevator . The build quality on mine was So So and I needed to do fixes .
Still . looks damned good in the air ! Been over a year since I last flew it . Just could have been better .

A nice DLG day - Raven 990 (11 min 10 sec)



Been a long time since I flew the Raven 990 ..
I did something to it over a year ago to slow it down , just flew too fast .
So needed to be re trimmed .
Now that it flies slower , that CG looks to be a bit of an issue .

Came home and pulled some lead out of the nose . Move the CG further back to the recommended ( manual ) spot .
I have two batteries , on that will hit the recommended CG and a slightly larger heavier battery that will move the CG a little further forward .
Will see how that goes in the future ..

There was a little bit of lift when I started trimming , but by the time I fired up the cam the air was pretty much dead .
Also the wind was in the Sun , that was a pain . Trim is close .. Just need to deal with the CG

Micro Mini Stick 2nd flight on 2s (10 min 6 sec)


That Zippy 350 really hangs in there in this combo . Battery voltage again was 3.83v when I put it on the charger .
Just needed a little aileron trim .
When you cut power the nose drops a little . ( I dont mind )
Flies reasonably straight for a balsa / ply plane , especially a micro size .
Dancing wings R03 Still available , $25 in the USA

I dare say , it could be built even lighter with smaller servos / motor / esc and battery .
A sweet little park flyer . Mine makes hardly any noise at all , from any distance it may as well be a glider it's that quiet .

Mine comes in at 126 grams with a zippy 350 2s ( Flying weight ) ..
I think with some careful building , 100 grams may not be out of the question . ( component choices )

The way I built my wing , I got a little more chord , but my CG is right on 45mm from the LE

Micro Mini Stick .. On 2s

This is how it should have been all along , 2s powered !
I had to do the 18650 thing , but I built in 2s redundancy .
It needed to be retrimmed .

Has a Zippy 350 2s for power
Prop is a cut down 5030 ( drop current from 6.7A to 6.3A at full throttle )

It still needs a little work , especially to lock down that battery .
Flies slow and flies fast . At full throttle it's a little rocket .
Battery after all that was 3.83v when I threw it on the charger . ( Maybe a 6 minute timer for this one ? )

Just looking at voltage boosters of FleaBay .
Im thinking , if going this route (?)
Then 2s might be the better choice .
Voltage boost to 8v .. There be a few options .. But I purchased a variable output converter and ???
Will it kill @ ESC ? Thats the question I am wondering .
How much power will I need ( current / Amps ) to maintain flight .
Motor size ? Model - Actually I have two chuck gliders that can be converted ( around 1 meter wing span )
Battery = Single 18650 , actually two 18650 would make life so easy , but that would be about 130 grams of ballast .



I will have to do some testing .

LDARC 450x Brushed Wing (6 min 35 sec)


Took out the LDARC 450x Brushed wing .

Has a hot 8520 brushed motor
All in one Rx with a brushed ESC
Runs a 300mAh 1s battery
1.7 gram servos
Flying weight is 49 grams
Fun factor = 100

This wing really has evolved over time .
Originally I think I had the F949 flight control board with a some what lethargic 10mm brushed motor . Now look at it !

Micro Stick 18650 project

Has ended . Just can't get the thrust I need for a one hour flight .
Problem is the voltage sag .
I can fly for between 10 and 15 minutes .. But as the voltage in the battery drops so do my RPM . ( 1s )
I start flying with about 80% throttle and after 10 minutes I need 100% throttle and I can stretch that to 15 minutes of flight time .
And it's all directly related to the voltage sag .
Performance VS battery was just too marginal .

So I have ripped out the 18650 holder , and I will be flying the micro stick on a small 2s battery next ( ESC is 1s-2s )
Those 18650 did weigh around 46 grams to 47 grams .. So there was a substantial weight penalty as well .
Yeah , should fly on a small 1s Lipo , but I think it's time for some 2s action . ( Performance )

So I did fly on a 18650 battery , but that 1 hour flight time was a bit of a pipe dream .
Hmmmm , what about a bunch of voltage boosters ?
Yeah , how about that ?
Problem is the small ones are current limited to maybe 0.5A , so maybe a bunch in parallel ?
One would be introducing more variables , and dropping efficiency !

Been sitting doing nothing for over a year .
Originally this was a crash monster .. Rudder crashed the plane .
Rudder servo has been removed . rudder glued and taped .

It flies just as I remember . PITA .
Ok it has one thing going for it , it's very light . ( But that makes it fragile )
I was going to turn stability off , but chickened out . ( Did not fill me with confidence )
And that elevator nearly crashed the plane on launch ( That flight control board )
Though it did pull off a sweet assed landing , that was something .

I looked and this model is horrendously expensive ... ( For a bag of S )
Got a hankering for something small , look at the UMX range .

Xtar FC2 charger (3 min 8 sec)



Xtar FC2 Charger - Made available for review by Xtar

A) Uses USB input ( 5v 2A )

B) Can charge one battery at 2A or two batteries at the lower 1A and 0.5A settings . ( dependent on USB power supply )

C) Starts charging at constant current till ( at or close to ) 4.2 volts it switches to constant voltage ( 4.2v ) and begins to drop the charge rate .

D) LED's flashing indicate the battery is being charged - when they all go solid the battery is charged .



The build quality on the FC2 looks to be excellent and the sliders are put together to a very high standard . The sliders slide flawlessly and just feel really nice compared to chargers made 10 or 15 years ago ( They still be out there ) . I have only charged a few batteries so far but !

A) The batteries are coming off the charger at room temperature ( 0.5A charge rate )

B) It does look like the batteries are terminating at 4.2v and depending on their quality and age will determine final resting voltage .



There will be more to this review ( updated ) , after I charge more batteries .

AA Update !

I spent the entire day ( April 20 ) charging AA batteries and some AAA . I have some dedicated AA chargers and they are brutal on the AA batteries , by that I mean the AA can come off the charger seriously hot . Oh man !
It has been - years !
Butt !! Time to check my batteries .
Xtar sent me two chargers to review and that put me on a battery checking mission .

I - Didn'y know - I had so many Zippy 350 ( I guess I dont need to buy any more )
Also , I have a few Nanotech 300 2s - Hmmm . I guess I could try one out in the UMX TT . Why am I going out and only running one battery ? , when I could could be doing 2 or three ? I might have to take more than one battery with me .

So , yes ! Time to check my batteries . Most are ok , some need a voltage bump to keep storing them and I found a few not worth keeping .
( The great battery purge of 2021 ) Yeah , quite a few 18650 and 16340 might be long for this world .
Only have 20 or so batteries needing a top up ( only ) and I haven't checked them all yet . ( Lipo ) .

XK A430 No2 Maiden Flight ( 2nd - 430A ) (8 min 23 sec)


Yes , got me another ( 2nd ) XK A430 .
Set it up very carefully for the maiden .
Trimmed the rates back to soften the controls .

Went out this morning to only sort out the stabilized mode .

Why = It was cheap ! Less than $100 Aus bananas with free shipping . Seller is in Sydney and has a few more .

Wow , a different animal compared to my first A430 .

A) Rates for stabilized mode ( 6G ) want to be 100% , expo ? I went 20% for now . It's like it's on rails when set up !
B) This one seems to have attitude hold , does my first one have attitude hold ???
C) Seem like completely different animals .

Anyways , one to fly and one for under the bed !

A430 - A real little rocket , reminds me of a Pylon racer !
Correctly set up , I like it ( enough to buy a 2nd one )

Cheetah Glider (10 min 3 sec)


Must be almost 2 years ago I converted this one . And never did a video ! Maybe because the maiden was as windy as all and shortly after launching it the wind gusted the Cheetah into a tree !

I have a telescopic pole about 5 meters long and I had to go home and get it so I could knock the Cheetah out of the tree .

It does not like a lot of wind , being all mild mannered and all .

With a Zippy 350 in the rear battery compartment CG looks to be good . Flight time looks to be good .

TX RC system - Is from my Joyways Crash Invader ( pictured ) It's mode 1 and very iffy !
But in the Cheetah glider it works ok . There was no way I could fly the Invader ( crash invader ) with that Tx .
So some changes were made ( new Rx / brushed ESC ) and it flies .

So I had a Tx and Rx needing to be used in something , so the Cheetah RC glider came to exist .
So there we go , it works . Some tweaking still needed .

A) Fit the battery better .
B) Improve the motor cooling more

Micro Tundra with Stunt Flaps (6 min 28 sec)


So I did the mixing a little while ago and finally got to test fly the MT with Stunt Flaps :

Stung Flaps

The flaps are mixed to the elevator , rates are dropped to about 30% for the mixed flaps . Flaps move in the opposite direction to the elevator .
What I am after is increased lift when the MT is on it's back . I am trying to tune out the attraction to terrible firmness that the flat (?) bottom wing has .
And it looks to have worked a treat , more than enough authority to keep the MT on it's back .
Just need a very nice wind free morning / day to fly the MT on it's back .

Yeah , the 3D printed one .
I completely messed up the all moving elevator because I put the control horn in the wrong place .
Bad ju ju with a all moving elevator .

it's taken me this long to get around to designing and printing a replacement .

Previously : My launches were all over the place because if my fopar . Seemed to glide ok ( seemed to ) .

So hopefully with the control horn in the correct place , I can have consistent launches . ( Well , one can hope )

Just need for Hobbyking to pull out the proverbial finger and get STUFF in stock .

Micro Tundra tip stalls (6 min 5 sec)


So looks like the MT was tip stalling on me ..
Lesson = Fly faster or use those flaps ..

MT Inverted - Oh dear ! .... We have a problem . Inverted the MT is attracted to terrible firmness ! I just dont have enough down elevator to keep the MT off the ground . I mean , I did try ! I flew inverted , and I had my stick pushed all the way forward . And I was loosing altitude .
I pulled out before loosing to much height .

I think the TT is spoiling me !

If I want to put the MT on it's back , Im going to have to tweak the elevator some I thinks .
