June 13-14, 2020
St. Marys, WV
CD: Mark Radcliff

My first Pattern contest is now in the books! The Flying Wing Nutz RC Club of St. Marys, West Virginia, hosted the event, with Mark Radcliff, AMA District III V.P., as the Contest Director. The club has one of the smoothest grass runways I have ever flown on. Very nice!

I had one week to prepare, since the old Black Magic pattern plane I bought recently had to be converted from glow to electric. That was completed and flown on Saturday, June 6. I got 17 flights on it before heading to the contest the following Friday. The canopy still needed paint, but at least it was flyable.

There were seven pilots, including me, flying in the Advanced class. There was some tough competition. Flying an average of 80% percentage of perfection might have gotten me a first place win in IMAC, but here I only managed to squeak in a Third place finish. Still, I was very happy with the performance of the plane, and I was happy to put in a solid effort without a single zeroed figure. I even managed a 10 for a slow roll and a perfect landing.

The Tail for my FX070cp have a emax 1804 ccw motor with 5" tri blade powered by a favorite littlebee pro opto 20A esc. Same as when it was fix pitch. The motor is rated 3s, but, I've ran it on 4s many times - no issues there.

Is it the Coronavirus lockdown, general boredom or something else, I don't know.... but I have decided to try my hand at building a woodie.

I always swore, and promised "Her Indoors" that I would never enter the IOM world but maybe I will, lets see how this project works out

While trying to find something to do during these strange times I stumbled across the build log from Scratchy101 where he was building an Ellipsis from FRD in veneer. Having failed previously with an RG65 build using strip wood I decided that veneer would be an interesting project to attempt.

A few clicks later I have ordered the plans form FRD ( and a few more clicks had 30 meters of unglued oak veneer on its way to me.

I really am, I promise, not looking to build a front of fleet boat and so building perfect and light is not my prime concern. At the end I just want something that floats, performs mid fleet and on which I am relatively satisfied with how it turns out.

Who knows if I will finish the project. Lets see how I get on

Here's a simple test to compare the drag from a free spinning prop and a stopped prop.

Free-Spinning Prop - Drag Test (2 min 21 sec)

UPDATE after further research:
The amount of drag is influenced by the pitch of the prop. Higher pitch gives less drag when free spinning. If the pitch is high enough then free spinning will give less drag than stopped (according to this study I tested some high pitch props but didn't have any that could show this, however the free spinning drag was definitely closer to the stopped drag.

I'm using my RCG blog here a vessel to put some of the aviation I have been a part of into written form on the immortal interwebs. The material will be scattered and informal but who cares.

Here's a brief blurb on our Family/Business machine, a 1949 Piper PA-16 Clipper.

The History
My father bought this airplane in May of 1990, so at 30 years it's been in the family longer than I have. He bought it in Florida and flew it all the way across the country back home to Sonoma California. After a couple years of flying it the way he got it, the restoration began. With my dad's business being aviation photography, it was paramount to keep the airplane flying as much as possible. So the restoration took place in a somewhat unconventional fashion. Like Johnny Cash said, one piece at a time. Taking a main component off, rebuilding it over a winter and having the airplane flying again by the time spring rolled around. The wings each took a winter and then the fuselage came last the next winter. At some point in the process my brother and I were born so we were running around the hangar while my mom was covering the airplane on the weekends. Eventually once the airplane was restored and flying in raw silver, it got its signature blue and cream "Presten's Aero Photography" paint job.

Once the restoration was completed, it was time for the next major step in the Clipper's story, it had to float. When I was two or three years old, construction began on a set of Murphy...Continue Reading

Finished my 85" Extreme Flight E300. Installed the recommended XPower 40cc motor and a Hobby Wing 130A ESC. Swings a Falcon 22x10 nicely on 12s. MKS HV747 on ail/elev and HV1220 on the rudder. Best flying model i've ever owned. Smooth as silk and knife-edge is a dream. Couldn't be happier! 8+ minutes of Basic/Sportsman aerobatics.

Maiden flight was 2/3/20.

Got a backup T-Rex 550 flying that i bought here on RC Groups. Went through it and have been flying it a lot.

Maiden flight was 3/1/20.

Dr. Evil fell victim to an unfortunate smelting accident. Too much prop burnt down the motor and took the ESC with it. i found molten solder blobs inside the airframe when i gutted it! Good thing i had independent and redundant power sources for the Rx.

R.I.P. 3/10/20

Got my Assassin finished. Used this as a test bed for several new things like using polyurethane glue to skin the ailerons, sanding the foam and applying the Ultracote directly to it, building my own aluminum control horns, covering a compound object with a single piece of Ultracote, and using 1.5 mil aluminum tape to the vertical fins. i also built my own motor mount to save weight and installed all the components internally to clean up the airframe. Put WAY too much time and effort in it, but used it as a learning opportunity. Flys really nice.

Maiden flight 5/5/20.

Been flying lots of heli since the days got longer. Got them all together for a family photo....Continue Reading

Last weekend I was windsurfing an Eflite F-16 64mm EDF Jet, and this weekend it's with the Freewing F/A-18E HP 64mm EDF Jet, upgraded with a new FMS 4S 2840-3150KV 11-Blade EDF Unit.
It's another 20-25 mph windy weekend in CO, but nothing the little "Rhino" can't handle. 💪
