Thanks to the extreme generosity of one of my flying buds over on the Cox Engine Forum, my currently un-throttled Carl Goldberg "Ranger 42" will be cruising next summer's S.M.A.L.L. Skys behind a vintage "barrel throttle" Medallion .049.

Medallions are sort of an "interim" engine between the good-natured reedies and high-compression Tee Dee engines, and like the Tee Dees, are beam-mounted and will only run in one direction.

The Ranger presently has a Medallion .049 that runs wide open 'till it's fuel is gone and then glides in for a landing. This engine will allow low/slow passes down the flightline, along with the option to land at will (flying bud Tony will once again be asked to step up for these as I shoot some video/photos of the moment!).

Gonna be a fun summer!
Thanks Rene !!!!!!

Good news and bad news.

Lets go bad first, its a shorter story. My company got a new large format scanner/copier/printer recently. Sadly, we also got a new IT company recently, and they can be a little slow to set up necessary equipment and systems for us.
With that said, I was unable to scan the plans into the computer for digital sharing and such. much sadness. When the IT company gets around to PROPERLY setting up the scanner, I'll have those available. I've already met a few people here that are looking for those plans. If anyone reading this need plans for this kit, feel free to send me a DM.

Now on to the good news! The copier portion of this crazy thing works just fine! My boss helped me break out the 36" roll of paper and we were able to make full scale copies of the plans! After a little bit of trial and error, I now have 3 copies of the fuselage assembly and 2 copies of the wing assembly. This is perfect, as I'll be able to take it home, lay it out, and make any modifications I want without ruining the originals.
I will be copying any kit plans from now on. This is a huge benefit and really relives the stress of working directly on the original plans.

Looking over the plans as is, I know there are a few changes to the original design that I want to make.

First desired change: GoPro mount inside the cockpit for a "Pilot POV". I have the Hero Session 5 and it will fit perfectly within the cockpit and provide an epic view (IMO).

Second desired...Continue Reading

Parts of an article by Don McGovern from his "All Wet" column in the August 1968 issue of Flying Models.

Mr. McGovern was, and is still, one of my Model Airplane Heroes, and descriptive writings of his many seaplane adventures in the briny backwaters of New Jersey created images in my mind that exist to this day.

This is one of my favorites because of the bunch of photos included.

Center gearbox of the Ghost Rabbit GR1 (0 min 17 sec)

The internal structure of the center gearbox of the Ghost Rabbit GR1 has been designed to make disassembly and maintenance as easy as possible.
The modular design allows for working on the internal components without the hassle of pulling all gears, shafts and bearings apart.

2s On the stand

6x3 - 130 grams thrust - 3A - 10,000 rpm - 26W
6045 - 129 grams thrust - 4.69A - 7,000 rpm - 36.3W
5030 3 blade - 128 grams thrust - 3A - 10,700 rpm - 24.8W
5030 2 blade - 131 grams thrust - 2.8A - 11,200 rpm - 23.2W
4540 2 blade - 117 grams thrust - 3A - 10,700 rpm - 24.4W

3s On the stand

4230 2 blade ( cut down 5030 )
186 grams of thrust - 4.3A - 15,400 rpm - 50W

I really thought the motor might wind out on the 3s ,,, 12 x 2300 = 27,600 ..... But No !
Apparently this sample is not that grunt'y ..
On 2s it seems rather fixated on performing @ around 130 grams of thrust ..
That 5030 @ 2.8A and 131 grams of thrust , yeah I could live with that .
It be a respectable amount of thrust for the power ..

Guys,

A nice Gent by the name Peter from Germany has been dealing with 3D Printing and produced a scale 9-cylinder Engine Bust model that actually allows the Stock E-Flite 15 motor to go through the cavity of the Engine.

Details are at:
https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/show...-Basic/page104

3D Files can be downloaded from:
https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/show...postcount=1560

Here's my comments about the preparation of the parts from the Frame Molds.

1. Instead of drilling and other tools per the instructions, I have used an angle hook Pick Tool that was very effective in the cleaning of the main Engine Housing.
2. The Cylinder Push Rods need careful handling so as not to lose any because one of mine was ejected and flew a few feet at a location that was easy to recover.
3. Otherwise the instructions are very very well written.
4. Instead of CA, I am using Gorilla "Clear" Glue and it has been with great results.

SUMMARY:

The Pick Tool did a super and fast, effective job in cleaning up the inside of the main Engine housing.
This is by far the best Engine Model that I have ever come across and the quality is very good for 3D printer.

EDIT:

I am having great results in using the Gorilla "CLEAR" Glue!

Does NOT leave any residue, pretty much fast cure (comparatively to others) and it is CLEAR and does not look like there is any glue what-so-ever.

The warning label says to watch out for fumes but, I don't smell...Continue Reading
