Here is the touch and go, take-off and landings flight demo of my UMX J-3 Cub (2S BL) 3000KV using my custom Dubro 2" Tundra Tires.

Eflite UMX J-3 Cub (2S BL) 3000KV - Custom Dubro 2" Tundra Tires Flight (6 min 6 sec)

The process to make your own custom Dubro Tundra Tires set is as follows: (see below...)

I gently pried off the Foam from a set of these Dubro 2" Super Lite Wheels: http://www.horizonhobby.com/super-li...ls--2-dub200sl

The Foam is a PITA to remove and requires patience as well as a blunt nose pair of pliers as you grip the edge of the Hub and pull.. and pull your way around. The Foam will eventually give, but will not tear. Others have cut the edges of one side of the Hub off, which is another way to do it if you have small sharp shears.

Then I took the Hubs from these Wheels: http://www.horizonhobby.com/mini-lit...1-1-2-dub150mw

I spray painted these Hubs a metallic black, then added the lug nut details and finally press-fitted them directly on the Dubro 2" Super Lite Foam. They are a direct fit (not loose or wobbly) and will not come off. The Hubs are also a direct Landing Gear Fit which makes installation very simple.

"How did you make your Tundra Tires?" is the question I get asked most often with regards to my UMX J-3 Cub (2S BL), Hobbyzone Sport Cub S (2S Brushless) "Icarus", as well as my Hobbyzone (2S Brushless) Champ Crophopper. These custom Dubro Tundras have proven themselves time and...Continue Reading

This is the Maiden Flight of my Eflite UMX J-3 Cub (2S BL) that I've upgraded to the 180BL 3000KV Motor. I've also installed UMX Carbon Cub SS Navigation Lights for enhanced orientation in lower lighting conditions.

Eflite UMX J-3 Cub 3000KV Motor Upgrade w/ Nav Lights Maiden Flight (5 min 55 sec)

The Eflite 180BL 3000KV Motor is a direct fit replacement to the stock 180BL 2500KV Motor. You'll just have to switch 2 of the power wires to get the Motor spinning in the correct direction. The stock 5.75 x 2.5 "Stump Puller" Prop has been fitted on a Small Parts CNC Aluminum UMX Prop Adapter with the Prop dynamically re-balanced.

I've also installed a set of UMX Carbon Cub SS Lights on the wing. To finish the "clean install" look, I concealed the LED Wires that run on the leading edge of the UMX J-3 Cub wing with Tamiya Masking Tape which also happens to be a close "Lockhaven Yellow". I applied two layers (one perfectly on top of each other) of it over the LED wires and trimmed to fit, finishing a very clean look.

Fuselage pieces were then re-connected using the "Tape-Tab" Method, using smaller pieces of Tape Tabs on the existing stock tape that was applied from factory, minimizing tape overlap and retaining the "clean" look.

The Eflite 3000 KV Motor performed excellently upping the Thrust and Speed considerably when mated with the stock 5.75 x 2.5 “Stump Puller” Prop. While the UMX J-3 Cub battled the wind...Continue Reading

Last night, I upgraded the stock 2500KV Motor to the 3000KV Motor on my UMX J-3 Cub. The stock 5.75x2.5 "Stump Puller" Prop has been fitted on a Small Parts CNC Aluminum UMX Prop Adapter and dynamically re-balanced.

I also installed a set of UMX Carbon Cub SS Lights on the wing. To finish the "clean install" look, I concealed the LED Wires that run on the leading edge of the UMX J-3 Cub wing with Tamiya Masking Tape which also happens to be a close "Lockhaven Yellow". I applied two layers (one perfectly on top of each other) of it over the LED wires and trimmed to fit. Looks clean!

Fuselage pieces were then re-connected using the "Tape-Tab" Method, using smaller pieces of Tape Tabs on the existing stock tape that was applied from factory, minimizing tape overlap and retaining the "clean" look.

I don't have a way of testing static thrust, but I could tell right away that there is significantly a lot more pull on my arm, as compared to stock. The UMX Carbon Cub SS Lights look awesome on this plane.

The weather looks like it will cooperate today for a few test flights.

If anything, I should see a performance identical to my Hobbyzone Sport Cub S (2S Brushless) "Icarus" when it was fitted with the 3000 KV Motor and the 5.75x2.5 "Stump Puller" Prop.

This is the Maiden Flight of my Eflite UMX J-3 Cub (2S BL).

Eflite UMX J-3 Cub (2S BL) Maiden Flight - Golden Age Classic (6 min 15 sec)

It was a sunny yet cold 34 degrees Fahrenheit at the park. Winds were however, very mild providing ideal conditions for a maiden flight and also gave me the advantage to explore the flight envelope and aerobatic characteristics of this new UMX J-3 Cub.

Prior to take-off, I installed my custom Dubro 2" Tundra Tires, which are a personal preference for me and Cubs and Champs. I also performed a control surface check and found the ailerons and the elevator deflection to be a bit lacking. Therefore, I moved the control rods of the aileron and the elevator one hole closer in towards the fuselage (which is the same setup as my Hobbyzone Sport Cub S 2S Brushless "Icarus"). Using an Eflite 2S 280 mAh 30C Lipo, I used the wing strut fuselage connecting points as a measuring guide and placed my Lipo Battery's midpoint right in between the wing strut fuselage connecting points. Then I set the Timer on my DX6 to 6 minutes and prepared to taxi for take-off.

Upon take-off, I could already feel that this was going to be a great maiden flight. The flight characteristics of this new UMX J-3 Cub were nearly identical to that of my custom 2S Brushless Hobbyzone Sport Cub S "Icarus" (when equipped with the Eflite 180 BL 2500 KV Motor and Eflite 5.75 x 2.5 Prop combo), making me feel right at home on the sticks...Continue Reading

A slow with snow "merry go round" flight duet with my Hobbyzone Champ Crophopper (2S Brushless with Ailerons) and Mike "Deuces Wild" Frontiero flying his Eflite UMX Carbon Cub SS at David Lorenz Park. As the last snow storm left a good layer of fresh virgin powder snow, we did a pretty good job of "exploring the spaces of the studio" as well as both of our batteries' LVC limits when faced with 39' F temps.

A flight music video with my Parkzone Ultra Micro Custom 2S Brushless P-40 Warhawk.

Parkzone Ultra Micro P-40 Warhawk (2S Brushless) "Stella" - Music Video (3 min 18 sec)

Winds at the park during this flight were gusting and constantly changing directions, making the flight unpredictable and a bit unsettling. Fortunately, the AS3X and the 2S Brushless power provided excellent air authority over the constantly changing conditions as I was able to combat the wind through an aerobatic flight and bring her home safely.

"This flight is dedicated to Stella and Family. As the wind is ever-changing and unpredictable, your wings are strong and you'll overcome whatever challenges the winds of life brings. Have faith."

Here is my first video of 2016, taking to the skies with my custom-built Easysky / Horizon Hobby FW-190D (2S Brushless) "Simone."

Easysky / Horizon Hobby FW-190D (2S Brushless) "Simone" - Sunset Flight (4 min 57 sec)

It's been a while since I've flown my custom 2S Brushless Focke Wulf, however I managed to squeeze in 2 flights today in some fairly brisk temps. As the sun was slowly descending in its icy halo glow, I was able to open up Simone to some aerobatic flight. With the Fuselage of an Easysky FW-190D and the Internals of a UMX Beast 3D, Simone is one quick and agile Warbird, especially after the 2S Brushless Conversion, yet still retains her docile flight characteristics for smooth flight.

(PLEASE READ THIS FIRST) A New Year's Eve 2015 Snow Take-Off / Landing Flight with my Hobbyzone 2S Brushless with Dual Servo Ailerons (3000 KV / GWS 5030 Prop) Champ Crophopper.

Hobbyzone (2S Brushless w/ Ailerons) "Champ Crophopper" - 2015 End Flight (3 min 36 sec)

My 2015 year could best be described within this cold landscape flight. There were many ups and downs with bumpy terrain that I had to overcome. While I had achieved success with my professional life (working in an Office during the day and Coaching at night), I also had to say goodbye this year to a beloved friend of 15 years who is no longer in this world in my personal life. I fell into a deep depression, unbeknownst to others.. with the days appearing to slip by like the cold dust of the snow. But I somehow made the push to keep going through this year, trying to make a difference in the lives of others. Things are seldom ever perfect in this world, but if there is anything I've learned this year, its the response to these imperfections like the bumpy terrain of life that truly matters.

Farewell 2015. And here's to making the best out of 2016!
