Turkey Day Flight - 3DR Solo (OpenSolo v3.0.0) [GoPro Hero4 Black] (5 min 5 sec)

Giving the Solo a fly after Thanksgiving to test out the gimbal damper mod along with the 180deg shutter with the ND8 filter. Quite happy. My flying is not wonderful, however.

Edmunds Road Walk - 3DR Solo (OpenSolo v3.0.0) [GoPro Hero4 Black] (3 min 42 sec)

Testing out my new Freedom360 ND8 filter on my GoPro Hero4 Black on my 3DR Solo.

This video is a great example of the need to know your settings, and to know what equipment is appropriate for what environment.

Problem 1) Settings for yaw/pitch/roll were cranked up to max. Twitchy, and not suitable for smooth filming.
Problem 2) Walking while controlling (for me) made it very hard to maintain smooth stick inputs.
Problem 3) ND8 filter at dusk was a stupid idea, and pure laziness made me keep it on knowing full well that the lighting was not appropriate for it.
Problem 4) I did not have my GoPro ISO-locked, so the ISO was swinging wildly to keep the frame brightness consistent, degrading image quality severely.

In short: An awful video. Don't be like me.

ST Models ASW-28: Maiden Flight & Crash [L650] (0 min 47 sec)

I bought the ASW-28 two years ago and promised myself that I would not build/fly it until after I finished my Master's thesis.

So, two years on, I build, paint, and get the ASW-28 out to the field to fly as a reward to myself.

I've never flown fixed-wing before, so upon launch I put the plane into a tipstall and it plows right into the fence.

Yep.

3DR Solo - OpenSolo v2.5-RC2 - FPV Practice! [Tactic FPV-C1] (41 min 6 sec)

This video is the first time flying my personal 3DR Solo, and with FPV to boot! I run four packs back to back and get progressively more comfortable with the way the Solo handles, and the vagaries of FPV with linear polarized antennae.

RC Logger EYE One S - Wifey's FPV Practice #1 (Monitor) [RunCamHD2] (0 min 35 sec)

The wifey tries FPV on the EOS for the first time. Unfortunately, we attempted this pretty late at night and my L640 didn't like the late evening light levels. I have to give the EYE OneCam some credit as it gave us some picture, but not enough for her to fly comfortably in the low light.

RC Logger EYE One S - FPV Practice #1 (Monitor) [RunCamHD2] (4 min 35 sec)

I attempt FPV flying for the first time ever using my RC Logger EYE OneCam Tx and RC Logger 5.8ghz Video Set. It is much harder than I had assumed it would be, and had to fly in Sport/Stabilized mode to get my bearings. Next session will be better!

I grabbed a GREAT deal here on the forums for an assortment of RC Logger 5.8ghz FPV equipment, and boy, am I excited!

I also nabbed two sets of the RC Logger EYE OneCam Tx for my fiance and I.

The 5.8ghz monitor has a few deep cuts and one crack on the panel, but it works brilliantly. I polished it with some high-grit toothpaste, and thankfully the soft plastic of the screen took well to that and the cuts are far less noticeable now. The crack isn't going anywhere :P However, it doesn't really obscure anything being in the far corner.

RC Logger EYE One S - Rate/Acro Mode Practice #5 (Broken Frame!) [RunCamHD2] (7 min 30 sec)

The EOS did not have a good time today. I ended up breaking both front arm supports out of the frame in a highly unnecessary crash that came about due to me being far too confident in my ability to fly the EOS far and fast in Rate/Acro. I lost orientation and drilled it into the roof of a shed in someone's backyard.

To the EOS' credit, it flew pretty well after the impact, only getting progressively more wobbly as the plastic fatigued due to me doing flips and other stupid stuff with a broken frame.

Now the question is:
Get another stock plastic frame, or go for the 1.5mm thick RC-Drones/PhoenixFlightGear carbon fiber frame for the EOS? Hrmm.

I'm frankly amazed it lasted this long with me on the sticks.

Now to decide between another OEM plastic frame, or the 1.5mm Carbon Fiber RC-Drones/PhoneixFlightGear frame.
Posted by Saijin_Naib | Jul 24, 2016 @ 06:04 PM | 3,984 Views

This started innocently enough. I put a nice bead of thick electrical tape along the inside edge of the EOS lid to help it grip the frame better, as I've been losing it in impacts recently. After I did that, I decided to use one of the left-over EOX stickers to give the front/center a bit more visual distinction to help with LOS flying.

I put the EOS away, and shortly thereafter, modding ADHD kicked in and I took it out of the box and put googly eyes on it. I think I added about 50Hp at least, I'm not sure yet.

The eyebrows have no reason to exist other than that they're covering up wrinkles in the sticker that won't come out.

On a more serious note, I'm trying to track down suitable replacements for the RC Logger propellers. 65mm with a roughly 11mm wide prop is proving difficult to find. The Heli-Max 1SQ V-Cam props are the right shape, but they're only 55mm.

RC Logger EYE One S - Rate/Acro Mode Practice #4 [RunCamHD2] (6 min 29 sec)

Back at the field today to do more Rate/Acro practice with the soccer goal. This time, I decided I'd try a few manual flips based upon what I've seen in other videos. I failed miserably and knocked the EOS stupid, requiring a pretty thorough recalibration of the accel/gyro on the board. Thankfully, it is still together, though one of my propellers is very stressed and likely needs replacing.

Next time I'll get a flip!

RC Logger EYE One S - Rate/Acro Mode Practice #3 [RunCamHD2] (8 min 38 sec)

Today I decided to give another flight to my RC Logger EYE One S at a much more open flying spot than my yard. This seemed to have helped me as it gave me more room and time to self-level when flying.

As a goal, I decided to try to fly around and through the soccer goal's frame. I didn't end up doing very many passes through it, but it was still very helpful to have as a point of reference.

I think I'll continue to practice here, as I felt much improved this flight compared to the last one.
