2s Test

65mm ( 2.5 Pitch ) - 37grams of thrust @ 0.84A @ 23100 rpm for 7.4 watt

3025 - 75 grams of thrust @ 1.84A @ 19540 rpm for 13.9 watt

3330 - 96 grams of thrust @ 2.5A @ 17000 rpm for 21.6 watt

3830 - 105 grams of thrust @ 2.7A @ 16700 rpm for 23 watt

3s Test

65mm Prop - 84 grams of thrust @ 1.74A @ 32700 rpm for 21.6 watt

3025 - 144 grams of thrust @ 3.2A @ 26400 rpm for 39.9 watt

3330 - 168 grams of thrust @ 4.4A @ 22800 rpm for 55 watt

3830 - 188 grams of thrust @ 4.7A @ 21000 rpm for 55 watt


Lets compare those figures to the 1106 6000kv tested previously ..


65mm Prop 2s

3800kv - 37 grams @ 0.86A @ 23000 rpm for 7.4 watt
6000kv - 87 grams @ 3.2A @ 33000 rpm

65mm Prop 3s

3800kv - 84 grams @ 1.74A @ 32700 rpm for 21.6 watt
6000kv - 100+ grams but could not sustain RPM over 35000 and shut down

3025 Prop 2s

3800kv - 75 grams @ 1.84A @ 19650 rpm for 13.9 watt
6000kv - 136 grams @ 5A @ 25000 rpm

3025 Prop 3s

3800kv - 144 grams @ 3.2A @ 26400 rpm for 39.9 watt
6000kv - 225 grams @ 9A @ 33600 rpm for 108 watt

The 6000kv motor got seriously hot with the larger props on the 2s battery , so no real meaningful data to share .

Loos like that 3800kv motor wants more voltage ( 4s possibly ) .
Or perhaps I just got a low power sample ? ( Be nice to have a larger sample lot but $$$$ )
But those figures are some what comparable to the 1104...Continue Reading

Black Friday Sale over at BG

I got up early again to go play with those FF Su27's , supposedly 2kmh wind from 6am to 9am

Nope ! More like 20kmh wind

Thats annoying I have to tell you ..

Video has me throwing the Su27's into the wind , just for the heck of it . That much wind with such small light models = Whats the point !
Anyways , also had the LDARC 450x wing with the 1104 low power motor ..
Full throttle pulls about 2.5A .. ( Most of the video = 450x flying in the wind )

Also will be testing two motors shortly :
1106 3800kv RacerStar and a very interesting 1306 2700kv EMAX

I will do a direct comparison for the 1106 3700kv and 6000kv motors ...

Still lacking props , come on Snail Mail , so many props on order and none delivered .
Speaking of props , that new 1306 will hopefully prove to be the prop tester motor ( ????????? )

For review / test I have the Xtar VC8 charger . What we have is a multi battery ( 8 ) , multi charge rate , Nimh / Li-ion charger ( 1.5v / 4.2v ) . Depending on the charge bay used , you have 3000mAh / 2000mAh / 1000mAh / 500mAh and 250mAh charge rates to chose from . These charge rates should cover just about 99% of your charge requirements . The power source required is either 5v USB or 9v USB making this charger very mobile ( any USB source ) .

Charging 18650 :

I really like the way this charger rolls with Li-ion , good quality batteries come off the charger at 4.19v and batteries with higher internal resistance ( older batteries ) come off the charger at lower voltage as the charger does not appear to try and force 4.2v onto batteries of lower quality . I really appreciate modern chargers that are so much safer than the chargers from say 10 years ago .



Charging AA :

I really like the VC8 for it's 8 charge bays . Charging 8 AA at a time really makes charging batteries easy . ( Especially if you have a lot of AA ) Now a lot of chargers terminate AA charging at about 1.46v or maybe 1.48v . The VC8 takes my Nimh over 1.5v , I pulled one battery off the charger at 1.52v and it was still charging . At this time I don't know how high the VC8 might take the AA , but anything over 1.5v is probably a waste as NIMH just don't do what dry cells and Alkalines do voltage wise .

I glued one of the Bee 490 wings together ( just the foam bits )
Really wanted to get some idea on weight ( 34 grams for the foam bits )
And what I was going to do with the wing ?

1s Brushed or 2s Brushed / 1s brushless or 2s brushless

F949 F959 or something else ?

Hmmm , to many choices !

First I need to do more 1s brushless testing ..

Planning things out ( The best laid plans and all that )

34 grams for a base weight ... ?

Motor choice - Do I go for something small and light ? 3 to 4 grams
And then expect thrust in the 40+ gram region ( limited testing so far )
Or go for a heavier motor 10 gram , and maybe get 90+ grams of thrust . ( 1s )

Oh dear , if I go for Uber light , then I will have ? thrust .
But if I go higher , I may have better than 1:1 thrust to weight .

Small motor 4 grams ? Rx 3 grams , ESC 3 grams = 10 grams maybe ?
This would make about 44 grams ..
Then add ? servos and battery and hardware .. Possibly 60 something grams flying weight with 40 something grams of thrust .

The other way , with a 10 gram motor .. It would be only 6 grams more weight for the motor , but a heavier battery needed for CG possibly ..
So maybe 70 something grams with 90+ grams of thrust ..

Interesting .. No?

All up I have 4 wings to put together ..
One wing will be FPV and I did hope to put a flight control board on it .. ( Flight control board ??? - no idea where it is - post ? )

Oh well ! things to mull over ...

Had to get up 5.30AM , walk out the door just before 6AM ..
To get to the footy field in time not to be harassed by the wind .. ( Sat Morning )

Sunday morning - Sleep in ! Sat was a long day ....

Xtar VC8 charger , a USB power supply came ( 5v ) ...
So I ran a bunch of batteries thru the charger .. ( 18650 )
Have some important data ..

Mail = Hardly anything came !
Snail mail looks to have gone fully snail rather than mail .
Seems like , in the last 3 months the mail has slowed down ..

Where's my stuff ?

It took some time for the Astrolux FT03 to get into my hands . The order was placed May 6 and it arrived Feb 19 . I can only assume that it took some time for who ever makes the Astrolux FT03 to make some , or possibly they are very popular ? I did take the FT03 for a walk and to be honest it's not nearly the best walking light out there . But what it does do is throw ! It throws Nuts ! The FT03 is probably the most throwy flashlight I have ever encountered .

This flashlight would really need some serious looking at if you Spotlight , do search and rescue or any activity where you need to put a lot of light a long way out . The pictures show the FT03 lighting up a Tower over 400 meters away . Doing this in the city with all the associated glare from the city lights . Just one word comes to mind = Impressive .

The Astrolux FT03 comes with a lanyard and some spare 0 rings as well a battery tube / spacer to run 18650 . I am using a Xtar INR 21700 as it's the largest battery I have . The FT03 will actually take a 26650 , but so far I have had no issues with the 21700 . The springs hold the 21700 in place really well and there is no battery slap to speak of , even if you shake the light . The build quality is really nice , and everything screws together tight . This was a lot more Bushleague than I would have thought ..

1) The wing section was laminated top and bottom .
2) The power pack from the Biplane Glider was put in about the same place as the capacitor power pack
3) The Su27 was then assembled as per usual
4) The CG looks to be more or less spot on , glides the same as the stock Su27

Just need some decent weather for a test flight ..

Wow !
Can you imagine my surprise , when a Flashlight ( Astrolux FT03 ) was delivered this morning .
Order date was May 6 , it's Nov 19 today ..
I guess Banggood put in a order with the manufacturer and it took this long for them to get around to making some . ( I guess )
The light was sent for product review , and ..... It was a little embarrassing that it kind of vanished ...
If anyone from Banggood reads this ? , came this morning .

That glider is here , Biplane glider that flies like a rabid butterfly . ( The CG is way back )
Anyhow .... Why would you wan't one ? The power pack ... You want it for the power pack !
I will do a video ASAP , just so you can see / hear what I am talking about ..

UPDATE Pulled the power pack / pictures added !

FF SU-27 project ...

1) Iron the Su-27 back into shape ( yes , it came a little bent )
2) Disassemble the SU-27 ( Remove the power pack )
3) Clone the Su-27 in 3mm Depron
4) Swap in the power pack from the Lipo Biplane glider ( which is a dog of the leash )
5) Cover in laminating film for strength + weight ..

So , as is ... The SU-27 is too light and under powered to deal with any kind of breeze at all !
If the breeze ruffles the hair on your head , it's too windy . If you can feel a breeze on your face ? , it's too windy .
Take the SU-27 indoors or go home .

So what to do ?
Maybe add weight and power ?



Yes , that FF lipo Biplane glider has a fantastically over powered - power pack !
The SU-27 is here , and simply awaits it's new power source ( Not here yet )
Yes , I have a FF biplane , but I am leaving that alone for now . So I must wait for the one ordered ..

The clone Su-27 ....
Hmmmm , can it possibly be made RC ?
It would be smaller than the HobbyKing one I have ..

Wow ! Still windy as all out doors .. 2019 is about the windiest I ever recall . I hope this is not a trend that will be repeated next year , cos I did a lot more flying in 2018 .

Wing kit , yes the Bee 490mm double wing kit has arrived , and looks nice . Everything in the box came out at 100 grams even ( 2 wings ) .

Also got a DSM 4 ch Rx I have been hankering for ..

Also the folks at Xtar sent me their VC8 charger to review / test .. Just waiting on some USB power supplies so I can do a proper test .. The ones I have now dont come close to supplying the needed power for a proper test . But so far I am finding the charger very useful and capable .

My spending has come to a close for the year I think ( just about ) as this time of year the mail begins to slow down and anything purchased in Dec may not get here until next year . I am still owed a lot of knickknacks by the universe .

Plans = I want to build a FPV wing , and to that end ordered a compact FPV camera/tx unit . I ordered a flight control board some time ago , hope it gets here .. For FPV I would like some stability control .

The motor only just bolts up to the test stand .

1s tests , I record thrust VIA the stand and RPM VIA the GT power tach .
2s tests are through the stand ...

I started with the smallest prop that would bolt to the motor , my 65mm prop .

1s - 65mm - 24,600 rpm for 42 grams of thrust
2s - 65mm - 36,000+ rpm for 108 grams of thrust ( motor is getting warm , but not so much as to burn ) 6.7A / 51W

The data sheet shows a 3020 prop

1s - 3020 - 19,000+ rpm for 46 grams of thrust
2s - 3020 - I was very gentle in adding power to see if the motor would cook ..
Around 2A the motor was starting to really warm up ...
I got brave and pushed the motor to 5A for only about two seconds and the motor got finger burning hot ...
No I didn't kill the motor , it lives !
But obviously 3020 is just too much for this motor with 2s ... ( I had to try as it's on the data sheet )
I would run that little 65mm prop 2s , or maybe a smaller 3 blade .. ( dont have any right now ) ...

Wow , 108 grams of thrust for a small 0905 ... Even 1s was not horrible ..

On 2s it seems rather fixated on performing @ around 130 grams of thrust ..
That 5030 @ 2.8A and 131 grams of thrust , yeah I could live with that .
It be a respectable amount of thrust for the power ..

1s = 90 grams of thrust - 8,700 rpm

Hmmmm , remember that cute little motor ?

Yeah , I cooked it and now it's damaged ...

0802 16,000kv

4 x 16,000 = 64,000 rpm
8 x 16,000 = 128,000 rpm

I expected this might happen ..

The smallest prop I had , was still too much ..

I had to run it 2s , well it's advertised as being 2s capable ..

But that 16,000kv is just ridiculous ..

So ...... 2s .... resulted in some 41 grams of thrust at 39,000 rpm and the current peaked around 5.6A ...
Now the motor only got warm , I did not run it long enough to cook .. ( So I thought )
But obviously the motor got damaged doing a full throttle run ( 2s )

So is it really 2s capable ?????
I guess that was like lighting up a few cigarettes , the motor went up in smoke ( actually there was no smoke ) ..

What a anticlimax that was ...

Next motor test will be a racerstar 1306 4000kv ..
Supposedly 1 to 2s ...

Hmmm , how will it run 1s ????

What is cooking a motor ?

In a nut shell , it is when the motor gets so hot that electric current goes to generating heat rather than forward thrust .
This may or may not , result in thermal run away !

When electricity goes to generating heat , it means power is taken away from thrust resulting in diminishing returns .
This may be hard to notice in a quad or plane until the motor dies ..
But on my test stand it is noticeable almost right away as I can monitor RPM / Thrust / current ...

Thermal Run away ! ( A really good way to kill a motor )

Again , electric current goes toward making heat rather than thrust .. In a thermal run away situation , the motor begins to slow down ( lose power ) and just get hotter and hotter till the motor seizes ( stops ) or dies ( damaged ) . On the test stand I can pick up on this almost immediately ..

As I slowly increase power , RPM / thrust and current climb . Once a peak is reached only current might go up , that extra power being fed into the motor ( if it takes more power ) is most likely going into manufacturing heat .. And as the motor gets hotter it begins to slow down ...
The faster this occurs ( seconds ) , the more likely that the motor may go into thermal overload .

It would be very difficult to pick up on this without the ability to monitor the motor properly ..
A way to avoid such would be to match your motor ( KV ) to the battery ( voltage ) and prop you want to run .

Lets start with the 3025 prop ..

2s - 145 grams of thrust - 5.59A - 26,400 rpm - 45.5 watt
3s - 268 grams of thrust - 10A - 35,000+ rpm - 118 watt ( Getting hot )

3830(E) prop ... ( 383E )

2s - 191 grams of thrust - 8.21A - 22,000+ rpm - 62 watt

3330(E) prop ( cut down 383E )

2s - 170 grams of thrust - 7.61A - 22,800 rpm - 54.9 watt



Sorry guys , just look at how that current / power peaked from 2s to 3s with the 3025 prop ...
The larger pitchier prop would most likely peak even higher and just cook the motor .
The motor seemed to behave well with all the props tested ... Even ran solid to 35,000 rpm ..

I suppose if you were made of money , you could afford new motors as you cooked the ones you had racing ..
But seriously , 268 grams of thrust . From such a small motor ... !!!
You would probably kill the motor if you stayed on the hammer for any length of time , but I think this is the best motor tested so far for a 11 size .. ( From what I have ) ..

On 2s , with a well selected prop , I would dare say a sub 100 gram quad would scream fast enough for anyone (?) .
And powering a micro wing ? ( Yeah )
I just need to remove the 1103 from the 450x and give that a test ...

For testing props ? , I don't have a suitable motor .. I thought that 1106 might have done the job , but I was wrong .
Not that there are that many 1103 - 1106 props

I think the motor wants more prop on 2s

This motor is supposedly 1-3s , and for me 6000kv is probably to high a KV for actual use .. ( Unless if you plan on running 3s and small props , in which case it might be ok ) But the high rpm ?
For actual use , maybe 3000kv to 4000kv would be a better choice . Especially if you want to run less current and more prop .

Even with such small motors , if you are running 2-3s , I just dont see the need for high KV .. ( Thats just me )

4v x KV ( 1s )

4x 3000kv = 12,000 rpm
4x 4000kv = 16,000 rpm
4x 5000kv = 20,000 rpm

8volt ( 2s )

8x 3000kv = 24,000 rpm
8x 4000kv = 32,000 rpm
8x 5000kv = 40,000 rpm
8x 6000kv = 48,000 rpm

I would say that for 2 to 3s , those high KV numbers are just silly ... ( For numerous reasons ) , one being the high current which tuns to heat . The other being that larger props are more efficient .
I did buy this motor for testing props ... But now , after seeing 160+ Grams of thrust ... I think I feel the need for a 1106 3000kv motor ...

UPDATE :

3s Testing ..

65mm Prop .
Wow , this motor does not like pulling more than say 35,000 rpm ..
As you approach 40,000 rpm the motor craps out ..
It did stay cool how ever , but peak RPM is reached around 50% throttle on 3s ..
Thrust is around 100 grams ..

I will try the 3025 next

3025 (3s)
33,600+ rpm / 9A+ / 225 grams of thrust / 108 Watts / Cooking !!!!!
20,000 rpm / 78 grams of thrust / 28.5 watt
