After almost a year! CrackerBox2020 is done!
Well almost, I'm still waiting on a brass tee for the fuel line hook up but other than that she's done! (and some wire routing, the radio box is kind of a rats nest right now)
Quite an adventure and I had a lot of fun with this build.
A long ways from the 049s we used to make air boats with when I was a wee one.
I had hoped to have a lot more folks chime in over the course of this but I did get a few tips, so thank you for that.
I have a buddy with a cabin on a lake so that will probably be my first run, hopefully all goes well.
Or later this month I might just take my fishing boat out to the local lake and give her a go there.

Anyhoo, hope you all enjoyed the show.
I don't think I'll build another one anytime soon because after almost a year I have other projects I want to get on to.

Could you build this in a weekend?
No, but if it was your only to-do item I think it could be done in a month or two with some dedication.

But this was fun and thanks to Joe at Zippkits for the help and guidance.
Bummer, I had short vid of the servos doing what they're supposed to, but no vids in a blog I guess.
Once I get her wet I'll figure out how to post a vid of the first run.

I will be having a garage sale of some left over bits and pieces so keep an eye out for that.

CB2020 out for a while!

Second clear coat went a little better.
Not 100% but close enough, I'll polish and wax after it's all together.
Getting the rudder set up, I somehow got my mock up wrong, not sure what happened but I need to make a longer control arm.
Oh well, whats few more bucks at this point, right?

The main issue is I set it up exactly....wrong.
I forgot to take into account the rudder connecting rod is supposed to sit on top of the servo control arm.
So I'll turn the servo 180* to get some extra length so I can do a slight bend-bend and get it to sit right.

A little detail and touch up paint here and there.

So it took a while to get going again.
I got the clear coat sprayed on.
I guess I'm not so good at this step.
Turned out as more of a fog coat than smooth and shiny.
Wet sanded w/ 800 and going for a second coat.
I let it flash and all the other tips, I just didn't apply properly.
I'll take more time this round and hopefully it turns out right.

Lesson learned!

Trying to get the fuel line on the carb's barbed fitting is not something to try to do after it is installed into the boat.
Not enough room and it takes a lot of effort to slide it on. See orange fuel line in pic.

So had to pull the carb, brace the little fitting on the work bench, put some 2stoke oil on, and push hard.
Reinstall the carb and torque it down.
Ugg.

Anyway, lines all routed and clamped in place. Nice and tidy.

Figured out the throttle issue.
Had to move the servo end out one hole on the arm, and the throttle end in one hole.
Throws from fully closed (idle) to WFO!

Weather is supposed to be nice this week 70*, I can finally wet sand and clear coat!

Hope to get her wet by next month!

Water pump mounted.
Lines run for water and impulse for the pump.
Need to finish the fuel lines but I might do that after the clear coat.

Really close now!

Installed the radio box.
Laying out fuel/water lines.
Mounting water pump.
Struggling with the throttle hook up, the servo doesn't want to throw far enough to go from closed to WFO.
Might have to make different lever to get it to do what I want.

Anyhoo, closer by the day.

Engine put together and torqued down tight.
Need to re-install in the boat to layout fuel and water lines.
Holding off on the rudder, trim tabs, turn fins, etc. until I clear coat.

I think it's turning out better than I expected, I guess we'll know when it's fired up and on the water.

We have power!
Got my radio box all hooked up, played with the servo settings, seems like it's going to be great.
Still need to do a little wire management to tidy things up a little.

Made a nice Lexan lid for it. Left the film on until I get it truly mounted in the boat so it doesn't get scratched up.
Gonna start working on getting the engine all set up, torque things down and lay out the fuel and water pump lines.

I'd really like to clear coat this weekend, but the weather doesn't look so great, might have to wait a little longer.

Getting the radio box back together.
I mocked it all up before painting so goes back together smoothly.
Thankfully I thought to drill the holes for the side mount servo, no way in I could have got the screws in if I hadn't.
Made a battery holder out of some scrap, w/ elastic Velcro strap to hold 'em tight.
I'll epoxy that into the bottom.

I got a Dynamite DYNE1240 safety kill switch, anyone know how well these work or last?
I'm concerned because the hook up wires look really small for handling the Ignition coil load.
It does say up to 20v, 16amps, the wires just looks tiny to me.

Weather is finally getting warmer so next weekend I can clear coat. Hopefully.

Wet sanded the first color coat w/ 600.
Had to re-tape, I was worried that the water might get under the tape and bleed.
I used 3m sensitive surface purple tape worked real good, no bleeding at all.
Second color coat yesterday, looks real nice.

Need to let cure for a week or two then can clear coat!

Finally! First color coat down!

Looks pretty good, need to sand a few spots and buff w/ 600 then final color coat.

Needs to sit for a few weeks for the paint to cure then I can clear coat.

Hopefully it will be warm enough by then.

Top hull and deck ready to go, then more rain!

Hopefully I'll get a window over the weekend to get the last of the color coat down.

Picked up some SprayMax 2k Glamour Coat.
Probably be a while before I get to that, needs to be a consistent 65* so it says.

Looks shorter and fatter than it really is.

Progress!
Finally warmed up enough to paint.
Sanded, vac'd, and tack cloth.
I got 2 coats of HiGloss White down.
Needs to cure for a few days then I'll flip her over and get the sides and top done.
Buff with 800 then clear top coat.

Feels like forever but almost done!

Lighting was poor but here are a few pics.

Lot's of work, then snow and ice.

Too cold in the shop to lay down the finish coats right now.
I did get 2 coats of primer down, sanded w/ 400 after the first coat.
Holding off on sanding the second coat until it warms up a little more.
Taking a long time but it should look great when it's ready to run!
Radio box and rear hatch all primed too.

Gun metal flake for the inside hull and radio box exterior.
Bottom of hull and interior radio box = white.
Top of hull, rear hatch, and radio box frame = yellow.
Making a clear lexan cover for the radio box to see the servos. etc. inside.

Everything is on the shelf and just waiting for a few days above 55* or so.
Paint and finish, then assemble.

Big thanks to ZipKits for the kit, parts, and advice.

Can't wait to fire it up!

Christmas is over, boxed up, and put away.
Looking forward to getting her done and on the water.
Here's a few of the gifts I cranked out for presents this year.
Damascus blades, and a live edge walnut cutting board w/ curved accents.

Need to put another coat of sealer on, wet sand then I can prime and paint.
Sunburst yellow w/ white bottom. Maybe some stripes on the deck, haven't decided yet.

Deck on and getting prepped for primer.
Flotation inside shots.
1" thick block cut to form to the inside of the hull, one layer from engine forward, one layer down the sides, and a second layer up front ahead of the fuel bag location. About 4 sq. ft. overall.

Been swamped at work, and pulled off for a while to knock out some Christmas Presents.

If I can get to it I'm hoping to prime and sand this weekend to get the color coats on.

So I took my state exam, find out if I passed in December.
Been working on her when I can, making progress!

Got the interior primed and painted.
Got the flotation fitted and glued in.
And the deck epoxied on.
Didn't stick well to one of the stringers so I'll have to reach up in there and add a bead I guess.

Next, trim deck to hull, fill any small gaps, seal, prime and paint.
Can't wait to get the engine and electronics installed.

Got the radio box set up, servos installed, and all looks good.
Should have taken a pic, all mocked up and torn back down.
Ready to start painting the interior, need to set the top deck and prep for paint too.

Looks awesome, can't wait to see it run!

Still studying, so build time is limited.

Cool parts from Formufit.

I have extras if anyone is interested, I had to buy 16 needed 8.
So I have enough to build another one, but you have to get your own tubes.

Hit me up if you want, $20.
