Getting ready to start covering...but first I had to make the wing-to-fuse fairing.....
stacked up (8) individually cut (CNC) profiles, glued them together, and then to the top of the wing.....
not bad for Mr. Thumbs

Got the ailerons and elevator mounted and hinged....And she balances right where she is supposed to......now to figure out color

Just ran the wing loading calc's.....48 oz all up over 6 sq ft of wing....8.0 oz/sq-ft......that's pretty light wing loading...very pleased......anything below 10 would have been acceptable

Got the wing assembled and the servos mounted..will build the control surfaces today....sewn hinges

And I got most of the fuse done..had to surface mount the rudder servo....not enough room inside the fuselage.....oh well....The cowling is the bottom of a Hug Fruit Juice Barrel......the only glider on the planet with a radial engine.LMAO

Not much interest over in the Balsa Builders forum regarding the Plank, so the build log will continue here.

This one is called "The Irresistible Plank", a tailless slope soarer from the late 1970's. The original wingspan was in the neighborhood of 110", with a Reflex-S airfoil, and flown as a single channel (rudder). When I returned to the hobby some years ago, I tried to hone my skills by cleaning up, or redrawing a number of plans for Steve Smith at OuterZone. The Plank was one of them.

Since the club does not possess a winch, and I'm not inclined to build a high-start, I decided to take the original design and scale it down (so it would fit in the car) and add a folding prop electric motor. I've also added elevators to the center section of the wing, and aileron/flaperon/spoilerons to the outboard panels.

Finally got back to The Plank........got the fuselage sides and formers assembled......working on the outboard starboard wing panel. I've decided to make the wing flat because I have aileron/flaperon/spoileron control. The original glider had a polyhedral wing and was rudder only.. Decided on dual I-beam spars. Spar joiners are 1/8" birch ply. Shear webs are 1/8" balsa. Wing will be D-boxed from the LE back to the first spar, and V-boxed at the TE . Ribs will be capped...See, I can build with balsa..LMAO

A bit more progress on The Plank..wings are D and V-boxed, ribs are capped (except at the panel joints) , and the wings have been rough sanded..now for the middle section

Mike,

I've used vellum (tracing paper) to cover a few of my birds (Alvin, Clearprint, Helix, etc). It's a lot stronger that tissue, but not as strong as Mylar, has no directional grain so it shrinks uniformly, and it accepts paint readily.

You can also use brown paper, but it's heavy. I've never tried the iron on fabrics, though lots of people have had great success with it

This is as close as we could come to "formation" flying....LOL

Just finished these two .... one for a flying buddy, and one for me (the green one) ........

I changed the color scheme and the livery for the green one ... the inspiration came from the Luftwaffe squadrons of WWII, with a lot of poetic license.
Hope you guys like it

Keep your nose up in the turns

My wife is really into feeding Hummingbirds, and she's always coming up with new feeder ideas.......I've made them out of spice jars, Margarita Salt containers, plastic bottles, etc...here's the newest one...test tube feeder ....a bit of 1/8" ply and a dowel

Just about finished with the drawings of the Plank, but I had to rebuild the jet fleet....was down to one

I discovered OuterZone.co.uk when I first returned to the hobby in 2012. OZ was still fairly new, and I ended up volunteering to help clean and or redraw some of the plans that had been submitted. Long story short, one of the plans that I redrew was "The Irresistible Plank", a large flying wing from the late 1970's (MAN Jan. 1979). I never built it........well until now.....I've been searching for something different to build, so I'm going to give this one a try. Other projects are on hold for now....The original aircraft had a 110" WS.....gonna scale it down to ~ 72", and make it a powered glider...stay tuned

Not long ago, I was asked to join RC Pilot as a beta tester for their site.....it morphed into being asked to post articles for reference.....I posted three articles, all of which lost their formatting at post, even though the previews were perfect.....the articles were a mess.........whatever...RC Pilot can't seem to fix it....On top of that, the site is a nightmare to navigate with more filters than a desalinization plant....and now, the site is dominated by two morons that have to post how many pieces of toilet paper it takes to wipe their ass.......

Long story short, don't waste your time with this site....you'll waste a lot of it
