Having spent January & February hunkered down amidst rain /wind...
...several trips to L.A. & back...the odd bout of sickness & fatigue...and a spending a couple '$$$K's worth & on taxes, unexpected car repairs and vet bills for my dearest, stalwart companion Ehrlah...

I DID slowly get back to modding this FX-706 Glider!
What should have taken a few weeks...along with the inherent 'trial & error' of unconventional building off ill-defined 'plans'--has taken me 2+ months.
Oh, well...I've still 'enjoyed' the journey/challenge.

One issue slowed me down initially: the Vertical Tail as I designed it didn't have enough torsional stiffness. When I mounted the stock, foam stabilizer in position, I could waggle and twist it with my hand quite easily. Aerodynamic flutter--"waiting-to-happen"!

This was after I had routed & embedded the elevator cable guide to its 'exit' point & thought I'd be ready to mount the rudder, stab & then skin over everything. Still determined to do as much of this build WITHOUT carbon & minimal glassing, as I was using shoddy, Harbor Freight 2-part epoxy.
Only '5 min.'-working time(..when it is cool outside!..) & a real PITAS to get right!

Of course, weight budget for this tail end loomed over everything. I haven't put it on a scale yet but I'm watching how far the 'CoG' creeps back behind the wing saddle T.E., when balanced on my finger or ruler's edge!

Here are the pros and cons for the Blade Inductrix Switch Air Wing:

- This is fun!
- It could be great for a beginner, but I recommend the RTF version for that
- Can be converted into a hover craft or quad
- Larger 220 batteries work
- There is potential to FPV this quadcopter wing

- Short flight times , even with the 220's, but they're not quite as short

Recently got a akk infinite dvr vtx and have been really liking it. It seems to have really good range and the dvr function is awesome. Posted a short video of some crappy flying with it.

The continued epsiodes of the Son of FrankenSolo build. Using Olliw's UC4H and a 3DR Solo surplus motherboard to create and advanced DIY quad.

I have gotten the UC4H powerbrick, UC4H ESC's, UC4H Display Notifier and UC4H GPS/MAG/Baro installed. Kinda the required basics to get flying.

Now for some frosting on the cake. I have wanted to experiment with a downward facing sonar since the APM days but the sensors available have always been marginal or quite expensive. The old HC-SR04 did not do much. The Maxbotix had noise isssues to deal with and the true LIDARS were in the hundreds of dollars.

For low altitude measurements Pixhawk depends on it's barometer. But the Barometer senses air pressure and that changes with the weather. So adding a better sensor for low altitude height measurements could improve landing and AltHold flight mode.

The new kid on the low altitude sensor block is the Benewake TFTmini LIDAR. It is not a true LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) because it does not use a laser. It instead uses a less costly LED light. But it seems to work well and is moderately priced at around $50.

OlliW took advantage of this new sensor and added it to UC4H. The UC4H Rangefinder. It could use the UART Tunnel technology but it is easy to setup and use as a UAVCAN device or the generic mode.

First install the UC4H Rangerfinder firmware on your General Purpose node.

I am trying to setup FPV and I thought I'd share my experiences as a complete beginner.

Since posting on here a while ago:

I ordered:
  • Eachine GOTG02 video receiver.
  • Run Cam Swift Mini
  • Tramp HV 5.8GHz Video Transmitter

After waiting for months, they finally arrived. Only today did I actually get a chance to connect it all up!

About me: I hate soldering! I was glad to see that for the first bench test, none was required.

Between the free cables and connectors supplied in the transmitter and camera boxes, I could connect everything. I was very paranoid that something would blow up when I connected the battery, finally I plucked up the courage and connected it. A little red light appeared on the transmitter as soon as I did and nothing emitted smoke which was great.

Next, I connected the receiver to my phone and launched the FPViewer app on my Samsung Galaxy S7. It scanned the frequencies and I could see my kitchen!

Latency Test
Someone mentioned that latency could be an issue with this setup. I decided to perform a test. I filmed my phone whilst it was displaying the camera's video feed. I then dropped an object in front of both camera. After reviewing the footage, I think the delay was only around three to four frames. At 25 fps, this equates to between 0.12 and 0.16 seconds.

To me this is a big relief!

Next Steps
  • Buy some adapters for the power connectors so I can connect the Tramp to my main battery
  • Think about mounting the transmitter and camera to the plane
  • Think about mounting my phone to my transmitter - I have some ideas on this! Will update soon

Short maiden flight of new Avios Spitfire in butterfly filled sky. She is one sweet bird!

My findings:
1. Requires surprisingly little right rudder on takeoff run to keep straight. Much better than all Warbirds in my collection.

2. Excellent low speed handling: for a heavily loaded plane (I fly with 6S 4000mAh 60C bats) she can land very slowly, even without flaps.

3. Unlimited climb!

4. With canopy open, the Avios Spitfire makes a very satisfying howling sound in high speed dive.

5. Control throws in the manual feels a bit unbalanced. Aileron high rates feels too soft compared to elevator low rates. Rudder throws feel excessive and tail wheel overly sensitive. I put aileron linkage to the inner most hole on servo horn and still have to reduce rate to 50% just to hit high rate of manual specified throws.

6. She will drag a wing tip when landing on hard surface. Narrow wheel track with notable positive camber combined with overly sensitive tail wheel makes ground handling very touchy. But I guess that's part of the scale Spitfire appeal.

All in all, an excellent warbird with great handling qualities in the air. Gratitude to Mr. Tom Hunt, Steward Warne and HK for making such a scale Spitfire accessible.

Ok , been testing this camera , but I had no way of directly recording the stream , until now ( I hope ) ..

Just need to check the camera outputs , make sure they match the DVR inputs ..
And hopefully I can do a little video recording ..

Eachine XT06 FPV camera , so far it's very nice ! A am impressed .
And it was on sale recently , making it a very good buy . ( For the $ )
So hopefully I will have a review ( soon ) on both these , as it looks like they may make for a very nice pair !

E012 - No bind , 3 or 4 attempts and nothing !
So it might mean the fault lies with the flight control board ..
Oh well ! Stuff happens some times ...

Progress has been somewhat erratic.

After a lot of googling and eBay searching I found a local store, and they had ONE motor mount left. Since I already realised that a bent aluminium plate would not be sufficient - the Revo chassis tab can easily be flexed by hand and any motor mount that does not use the “arms” connected to the central part will move and vary the mesh - I decided to buy one.

Now I have embarked on a motor/ESC combo search. A Hobbywing EZRun combo is currently on top, but the $150 is slightly hard to stomach for this budget ride. But it is also an LHS option which IMHO could be more valuable than cutting $20 off the price. Until I press buy what remains is just classic overhaul action.

Well, I went out with (3) aircraft in this flight session and the Converted Chuck Glider is the only one I flew because the wind was at 6-9mph when I started and 8-11mph by the time I finished.
I flew only the Chuck Glider because the EPP Foam is so durable as you will soon see and I have (2) more of these airframes ;-)

I decided to write up a PROCESS for Landing RC Model Aircraft more successfully.....
Mind you, variables in flight still make the task X amount more difficult - those can be wind/environment AND pilot SKILL (!!) plus visual errors which can create bad AIMS (as your data input is then X amount incorrect)....... but you want the SIMPLEST, repeatable, reliable, process possible!!

So this outline below is what I do to make it all as easy as possible......
