Sometimes, I just don't want to bring a bigger plane to the field. Sometimes, I just want to return to my RC roots. And for that reason today is why I chose my old UMX Beast 3D to take to the field.

Eflite UMX Beast 3D BNF Basic 6-Year Old 3S Performance Flight (4 min 40 sec)

Purchased in 2014, and the third plane I've ever flown in my fleet. Prior to the UMX Beast 3D, I flew the UMX Champ to teach me basic 3-channel flight.. and later on, the UMX F4U Corsair for 4-channel orientation. I flew those two planes for the first year of flying RC. But in the second year, I took a chance on the UMX Beast 3D. It was my first aerobatic ultra micro. I have a lot of respect for this old biplane as in my earlier RC days, there were a lot of close narrow margin saves while I was still learning its agility (it's too bad that I don't have a flight video of my earlier days with this bipe.. comparing my flights back then, to now would have been something cool to compare). Since then, I've had countless flights with this amazing biplane and it has taught me a lot. I have much to thank it for.

Modified for 3S with an Eflite BL180 2300KV Brushless Motor and GWS 5043 (5x4.3) Propeller. Powered with Eflite 3S 300mAh 30C Lipos. This Beast has been flying on 3S for the past 5 years with no issues. The wings, interplane struts, and tail surfaces have also been carbon fiber rod-reinforced to handle the long-term stress of 3S.

Extra accessories include a Shapeways 3D-Printed UMX Beast...Continue Reading

This is a fun demo flight I completed yesterday with my new Twisted Hobbys 29" EPP F-22 Raptor.

Twisted Hobbys 29” EPP F-22 Raptor Performance Flight (5 min 17 sec)

This F-22 is unlike any Raptor I've flown.. and I love it! It can be flown scale, or can perform some very outlandish aerobatics with it’s linked aileron-elevator design. Now all it needs is dual rudders to unlock its full 3D / aerobatic potential. That is a future modification coming soon.

Overall, this is probably the most fun F-22 Raptor that I've ever flown!

Love the ending of this flight video as well.

This is the 3rd flight out of 8 flights today with my new Eflite Ultimate 3D 950mm BNF Basic, all flights flown on 4S.

Eflite Ultimate 3D 950mm BNF Basic 4S Performance Flight (4 min 55 sec)

The Maiden Flight was very uneventful and was used primarily for checking trim, flight control response, as well as flight time / battery capacity measurements. The second flight was used to tune the amount of expo on all of the surfaces. This third flight was all about exploring the flight envelope, as well as control response to a few 3D / aerobatic maneuvers.

If I had to describe what this biplane felt like, it’s like a combination of flying my favorite old UMX of all time - The Eflite UMX Beast 3D, and another similar biplane - The Eflite Viking Model 12 280. This new Eflite Ultimate 3D 950mm BNF Basic is an incredible model that made me feel right at home. With 4S power, wide flight envelope, and floaty characteristics, the Ultimate 3D is a “well-thought out” design with no initial weaknesses that I can find within reason and normal use. This is a model that I will be spending a lot of time with.

SETUP INFO:

Battery - Pulse 4S 2250mAh 45C (235 Grams).

Battery Placement - As far rear back in the compartment, butted up to the underside of the battery latch.

CG - Lined up to 89mm from the center leading edge of the underside of the top wing, as recommended by the manual, and with neutral finger-tip balance.

Control Rod Placements - As recommended by the...Continue Reading

The Maiden Flight of my Parkzone F-27Q Stryker 943mm BNF (New / Old Stock) was a success!

Parkzone F-27Q Stryker 943mm BNF (New / Old Stock) Golden Hour Maiden Flight (4 min 39 sec)

I was fortunate enough to win this rare item on eBay a week ago. When I first saw this model 7 years ago at my local hobby shop, I was only a beginner, flying a Hobbyzone Champ, wishing I had the skills to fly it. I had passed it up at the time and had regretted it ever since. 7 years later, I came across this new / old stock on eBay and couldn't pass up the chance to have it in my fleet. And what an awesome 4-Channel wing this is! This flight goes through testing some of the basic maneuvers as well as knife edges, an inverted flat spin, and the boomerang.

Modifications:

1) Switched out the ESC EC3 connector to Deans.
2) Added satin tape to exposed leading edge of main wings.
3) Applied 2 spray coats of Minwax Satin-Finish Polycrylic.

Equipment, Setup, and Programming:

1) Transmitter - Spektrum DX8 (G2)
2) Receiver - Lemon LM0033 DSMX 7-Ch Diversity Stabilizer / Receiver
3) Gains - Aileron 8:30, Elevator 8:45, Rudder 8:45
4) DX8 Master Gain - Set to +3
5) Rates - Aileron 78% with 50% Expo, Elevator 80% with 48% Expo, Rudder 65% with 15% Expo
6) Lipo - Pulse 3S 2250mAh 45C (186 grams)
7) Prop Brake - Enabled
8) Mix - Throttle to Aileron Rate Set to -2% with an 85% Offset (to help counter the natural tendency of the subtle left roll while under throttle).
9) Throttle Timer - Set to 4 Minutes.
10) Hand Launch Throttle - 70%

Camera / Phone: Shot with an iPhone 11.

There are some planes that can make you look good.. and there are some planes that are pure magic. This one happens to be both. Here's a candid flight with my Twisted Hobbys / RC Factory 32" Gee Bee Z. 🟡⚫️

https://youtu.be/_eAsM5srn6o
I also go over some of the additional mods that I added to make it a fun night flyer as well.

The Gee Bee is a remarkable and fun 3D aircraft that makes me want to charge more packs just to get it in the air. It handles a respectable amount of wind, but is truly divine during a calm golden hour. A definite hit by Twisted Hobbys and RC Factory! ✨

Windsurfing my Eflite F-16 Falcon 64mm EDF Jet this morning with 21.4mph avg winds and 28.5mph gusts. High alpha and harrier-ing in the Viper, why not?

Eflite F-16 Falcon 64mm EDF Jet BNF Basic High Winds Flight (4 min 59 sec)

Thanks for coming out today Robert and getting this footage.. I knew you would be the only one in our flight group crazy enough to show up at the field today and fly in this mess with me.

I'm pleased to show my next custom RC work - Project Chimera. Callie Graphics pulled through with my custom decals last week and I was finally able to apply them on my project, which is a highly modified 3-year old BlitzRCWorks Deltawing 50mm EDF Jet.

BlitzRCWorks Deltawing 4S 50mm EDF Jet - Project Chimera (3 min 26 sec)

This was a little EDF jet that I picked up from Banana Hobby 3 years ago for $65, and was a surprisingly excellent jet on the stock 3S system. But the stock color scheme was absolutely awful. My friend Brad offered to change the scheme with his airbrush skills, and I accepted his offer.

The overall appearance and high agility represented the Dassault Mirage 2000, so I chose that main scheme. Interesting enough, the side profile also has hints of the F-16 (with its bottom intake scoop and vertical fin), and the turtle deck reminds me of an A-4 - Hence, I nicknamed it the Chimera (the Greek mythical creature which composed of parts from different animals).

The stock 3S system has also been replaced with a 4S setup. A dynamically-balanced XRP 4S 50mm 11-Blade 4200KV Unit has been drop-in fitted, and a ZTW Beatles 40a ESC with 3a SBEC has been installed.

Durability was also a factor. A custom bass wood block has been mounted in the underbelly of the nose section with a curved music wire strake. This acts as a shock-absorbing nose skid that prevents the nose from digging into the grass or turf on landing touchdown. The front intake and intake...Continue Reading

This Memorial Day, my tribute honoring those who served with valor and cherishing the memories of those who gave everything -- A performance flight of my Arrows RC P-47 Thunderbolt 980mm 4S High-Speed Custom Variant "Silver Lady" flown today.

Arrows RC P-47 Thunderbolt 980mm 4S High-Speed Custom Variant Memorial Day 2020 Flight (4 min 47 sec)

I actually wasn't planning on getting any flight video, but Robert surprised me when I spotted him halfway through with his iPhone out, recording my last flight of the day with the rest of the guys watching. I think he did very well capturing the Silver Lady in action! 😁

Just to recap this project, I customized the internals of this new Arrows RC P-47 Thunderbolt 980mm to have the exact (or better) schematics of the old FMS 980mm High Speed P-47 Thunderbolt (now discontinued). The stock Arrows RC 3S motor has been replaced with a new beefy FMS 4S 3648-770KV Brushless Outrunner (the motor mount has 2 different mounting points, one for the smaller stock 3S motor, and another set of deeper motor mounting points for the larger 4S 770KV motor.. which confirms that this current Arrows RC P-47 offering was once the FMS High Speed P-47 model), and the stock Arrows RC 40-Amp ESC has also been replaced with a ZTW 85-Amp Mantis with 5-Amp SBEC.

Measured 54.5 Max Static Amps, 855 Watts Power - using an Eflite Power Meter and fully charged Admiral Pro 4S 2200mAh 45C Lipo.

I also completed a lot of detailed setup...Continue Reading

A friend told me that I should dedicate something to honor your memory.. a great idea.

This flight is dedicated to you Mom.. You were one to always "Like" my Flight Videos and my Golden Hour Sunset Photos. It's not easy without you here, but we're doing okay. We miss you so much, and not a day goes by where we don’t think of you. Happy Mother's Day in Heaven.

I've finally completed and test flown my Ace Combat Zero Galm 2 "Pixy" Custom on my 2-year old Freewing Lippisch P.15 64mm EDF Jet over the past weekend. This video includes two flights - one in fair weather and one in inclement weather, demonstrating it's tolerance to a wide range of flight conditions. Watch all the way through to hear Pixy converse with Galm 1 "Cipher" and AWACS "Eagle Eye" through the comms, and also see an epic "Mission Accomplished" landing at the end!

Freewing Lippisch P.15 64mm EDF Jet - Ace Combat Zero Special - Galm 2 "Pixy" (6 min 39 sec)

See below for a list of my modifications:

1) Upgraded to an FMS 3S 64mm 2840-3900KV 11-Blade EDF Unit.
2) Upgraded to a ZTW Mantis 45-Amp ESC.
3) Armor-coated the underbelly with a foam brush-applied layer of JB Weld 5-Minute Clear Epoxy as a protective skid plate.
4) Custom Ace Combat Zero - Galm 2 "Pixy" Scheme (thank you Brad Lupher for the amazing airbrush work).
5) Spray-Applied 2 Coats of Minwax Satin Finish Polycrylic on airframe.

This has easily become the fastest EDF Jet in my fleet (+100mph).. and is still powered by the same Roaring Top 3S 1800mAh 45C lipos that I was originally using with the stock system. With a dry weight of 415 grams and Max Static Amp Draw of 35.5a, the thrust to weight setup is outstanding.

My Freewing Lippisch P.15 also had badly misaligned decals (top and bottom) on the right wing. So I took the...Continue Reading

Clipped Wing Cub Wednesday!

Eflite Clipped Wing Cub 1.2m BNF Basic - Golden Hour 4S Flight (5 min 0 sec)

It's surprising that I've had this Clipped Wing Cub for 2 years, and not once have I had a video taken of this fun aerobatic model, until now. I had only flown it once in its stock 3S configuration and wasn't satisfied with the power output for my flying style (for those of you that disagree with my power assessment, just try flying here - at least a mile up in CO and then we'll talk). The remaining flights up to this day have all been on 4S power and have had no issues.

I had also made additional upgrades to the internal system for 4S compatibility, performance and longevity, as well as enjoyability in dimly lit conditions. See below for a list of modifications and measurements:

BATTERY: Pulse 4S 2250mAh 45C Lipo
ESC: Hitec Energy Sport 60a w/5a SBEC
PROPELLER: Xoar PJN 11x6 Beech Wood Electric
4S MOTOR COOLING: Custom Cut Sanded & Painted Spoon Air Scoop (feeds outside air directly to the top of the motor through a duct in the hood)
AIRFRAME PAINT PROTECTION: 2 Coats of Minwax Semigloss Polycrylic
LIGHTING: Eflite EFLA600 Universal Light Controller (Full Navigation Lighting w/ Top and Bottom Beacon Lights
MAX STATIC AMP DRAW: 39.9 Amps
MAX STATIC WATTS: 607.6 Watts

The Clipped Wing Cub has been a fun high-wing aerobat that I've enjoyed many flights with, and definitely look forward to many more.

Thanks for capturing the flight video Mike!...Continue Reading

All in all a pretty good sunny day that turned into a chilly comedic scene. Also, a first time for everything.. my fingers just happened to slip off of my 4S-Powered Freewing F9F Panther right on the launch release.. Luckily I had the burner fully lit. Mike had it all on video while he was testing out some video settings on his iPhone X and using my flight as a test run. The rest was pure comedy with his commentary.

Freewing F9F Panther 4S-Powered 64mm EDF Jet - Save Of The Day (3 min 33 sec)

This just happened to be one of the very few and far in-between dreaded launch saves I’ve experienced, especially with the Panther. Due to COVID-19, my hands have been pretty badly cracked due to the constant hand washing. Prior to heading to the field today I had applied a hand lotion/balm to my hands which made them a bit slick, and that was the result.

This is what a typical hand launch looks like with my Panther:

This evening I was able to fly around past the golden hour. With another snow front moving in, rapidly dropping temps and some chop to make it interesting, my buddy Robert decided to take some video of my “short final” landings. I also cut it pretty close on the last flight of the night.. my face at the end says it all hahaha. 🥴😅 #LandNow

This is the 3rd and final installment in the Eflite Rare Bear series. The stock 8x8 prop has been swapped out for the more aggressive APC 9x9E prop and has been dynamically balanced, along with the spinner for an ultra fine throttle-up. Bench testing with a fully charged Admiral 4S 3000mAh 35C lipo yielded 68.9 max static amps with 1045 watts power - Great stats and within the "rated parameters" for the stock internals.

Eflite Rare Bear 880mm BNF Basic w/AS3X 4S Flight with APC 9x9E Propeller (4 min 24 sec)

My whole intent for this upgrade was to maximize the performance of the Rare Bear while keeping the AUW (All Up Weight) down as much as possible, for the ease of hand launch, as well as minimizing the amount of weight "momentum" it carries on landing approaches. With my APC 9x9E prop setup, the Rare Bear has significantly increased its power output and speed - hand launches are much easier, it can now clear the diagonal length of the double-wide lacrosse fields we fly at in under 3 seconds (formerly 3.5 seconds with the stock 8x8 prop), and has better slower landing characteristics on approach. All this for a $2.18 prop.. And all within spec.

With that said, I will be clear in saying that I have NO desire to go 5 or 6S - why spend more money on batts that I don't even own, just to increase the weight setup and make it a PITA to land on the field.. all for more speed that I don't even need? For $2.18, the APC 9x9E prop was a perfect choice...Continue Reading

I was trying to save this video for Thursday, but I might as well post it now since my new APC 9x9E props arrived today and I'll be trying to get a video of my 4S Eflite Rare Bear with the APC 9x9E prop sometime this week. In the meantime...

The adventures of my $25 Eflite Rare Bear continue (this is the same display Eflite Rare Bear that I bought from my local hobby store for $25, several months ago from my buddy that manages the store. It was sadly just hanging upside down in the store collecting dust when I offered to buy it from him. Still fairly new, I decided to dust it off and go to work with it.

Aside from having all stock internals and 8x8 prop on 4S, I also added some features to make handlaunching a much easier task and to increase its durability:

1) Minwax Satin Finish Polycrylic-Coated Airframe (2 Coats) for paint protection.
2) Velcro Launch Grip with Dremeled Index Finger Notch for launch release stability.
3) Dubro Wing Tip Skids for Control Horn Skid Impact Protection.

An added effect of the Index Finger Notch was also a "low-hum resonating whistle" (similar to blowing air over a bottle) that can easily be heard during flight and in the video. I didn't expect this to happen... but pretty cool, nonetheless.

Here's a flight of me just jamming to the Eflite Rare Bear. Hope you enjoy the video!

When I was a kid, I was never good at the piano (as much as my Aunt Edna would try to teach me). But I always had an appreciation for musical instruments and respect for those who play them. Maybe my MXS-C can, in a sense be an instrument as well. An RC dance, a waltz to Kreisler / Rachmaninoff's Arrangement of Liebeslied (Love's Sorrow).

This is dedicated to my Mom who had passed away on January 25th 2020. I was in the middle of making this video of my customized ZOHD Dart XL during the time of her passing and I had flown out to be with her during her final moments. I'm still having a hard time dealing with it and only now have I finally finished this video. Mom, I love you and miss you, forever and always. This is for you.

ZOHD Dart XL Extreme 1m Wingspan w/ Eflite F-27 Parts Upgrade & Lighting Mod - 100th Flight (6 min 4 sec)

I had purchased this ZOHD Dart XL over the summer and it had arrived with a defective motor, characterized by 12 of the internal magnets coming off inside the motor housing. Rather than reaching out to Banggood.com and/or ZOHD, I decided to take a different route and use this opportunity to make this unique airship my own personal line of sight aircraft.

I went to my local hobby shop and purchased a new Eflite F-27 Evolution and proceeded to gut it for its internal powertrain (BL10 1920KV motor, motor mount, 40-amp esc, prop). Then I sold the gutted Eflite F-27 Evolution to my friend who had spare parts to use on the airframe. I removed the stock motor, along with the stock mount, and filled the original holes of the wooden backing plate with epoxy. Then I re-drilled new holes for the Eflite F-27 motor mount and attached the Eflite F-27 motor mount and motor to the newly drilled holes, using metal washers as spacers in between the motor mount and wooden backing plate....Continue Reading
